a POST-CRESCENT. APPLETON-NEENAH-MENASHA, WIS. MONDAY, JUNE 30, 1997 Luxury yacht launched Schneider National trucks are finally getting up to speed r4 Policy changes likely to bring more expulsions MILWAUKEE (AP) Expulsions of students for weapons and other criminal offenses are expected to double in the next school year after a stricter policy goes into effect, Milwaukee school officials said. The policy would make expulsion the required penalty in more disciplinary cases than ever. "Everyone in MPS (the Milwaukee Public Schools district) has felt frustration because of safety parents, students, teachers and administrators," said school board member Christine Sinicki, who proposed the policy.

"Most of the time, students have been bumped from school to school, and the problem has never been addressed." The board voted 8-1 this month to adopt the policy. Statistics presented to board members this month by district administrators indicated there were 107 expulsions in the 1996-97 school year. More than half of the expulsions, 63, were for possession of a controlled substance, followed by battery, 17, and gun possession, II. limit on all highways to 55 mph. That is still the case for safety purposes on two-lane roads.

Having Schneider's trucks moving at the same speed as other vehicles is safer, "especially in the Fox Valley area where we have very congested traffic," State Patrol truck inspector Mark Abrahamson said. Schneider will study the results of the higher speeds to ensure that the increased costs of fuel and tire wear are offset by improved productivity, with no loss of safety, Matheson said. Cruise control will be maximized at 63 mph for Schneider drivers. "Our drivers do like cruise control. It keeps them in the right lane and does help them maintain a safe following distance.

It also will help traffic go around our trucks," Matheson said. Driver reaction to the change has been positive, he said. "They are going to be able to increase their earnings by increasing productivity. They will work the same amount of hours, but travel more miles." year. Schneider trucker Troy Waters says he's glad he won't have to putter across the country at 55 mph anymore.

Waters also is pleased that he'll no longer get hassled by other truckers for traveling below the speed limit. "It'll be better, especially out West where it's 75 mph," said Waters, who's been driving for Schneider since 1994. Schneider's lower speeds created a danger, said Jim Furst of Utah-based Doug Simon Trucking, who heard the news at a Bellevue truck stop. "You've got trucks on the highway moving at 52, 55, 58, 65 and 72 mph. You try to mesh that in with trucks driving 75 mph and it's a real hazard," he said.

Schneider began studying the move to higher speeds after Congress allowed states to raise the limit. The study became more focused when Wisconsin made the move in May 1996. The early 1970s fuel crisis prompted Congress to reduce the EMPLOYEES OF BURGER BOAT CO. in Manitowoc prepare to lower an 85-foot luxury yacht, the Evelyn-U, into the water Saturday. Schneider National one of the nation's largest trucking companies, is increasing the maximum speed its rigs can travel from 55 mph to 65 mph. Company officials say the speed increase for its 13,500 drivers is just one facet of a new program to increase the company's competitive position. "We must provide low-cost, quality service to our customers if we are to grow and remain the carrier of choice in the 21st century," said Bill Matheson, Schneider's vice president of operations.
