PAINTSVII.I.K, Ky May 1'4 (JP) Six -year-old Carl Nawton Ma-han was In his father's home today while older persons concerned themselves with the legality ot the court proceedings which culminat ed In the Imposition of IB-year sentence on the boy fur killing a playmate. A Jury found Carl guilty of man slaughter and decided, lu so doing, that he knew It was wrong to kill, anil a Judgo had sentenced him to imprisonment In a reform school until he becomes of age.

lie was then permitted to go home with his parents, to remain with them until his case is passed on finally. Attorneys who represented th boy planned to rale several legul questions in an appeal, one contention being that there Is no provision In law for the sentencing of a person under It) years old. Carl killed 8-year-old Cecil Van- hoose last Saturday after the boys had quarreled over a piece of Iron which they thought might bring a few pennies from a Junk dealer. Several witnesses told of hearing the quarrel, and Carl hlnmelf tes tified that he and Cecil "hsd a fight," that the older boy took the Iron away from him and hit him and thai he then went into the house, climbed Into a chair, removed his father's shotgun from the wall, pointed It at Cecil and pulled the trigger. After the killing he returned the tun to its place.

The father, John Mahan, a taxi-cab driver, testified that the boy had told him he "wouldn't have done It If he had known the gnu was loaded."
