S. the candidates weren't engulfed by people. Charles Collingwood, the host, is now based in Paris, but gets around the continent as chief European correspondent. Equal time was given to Conservative Sir Alec Douglas Home and Labor chief Harold Wilson.

Briefer glances were given at what amounts to splinter parties. "British candidates," we were told, "don't kiss babies, but they do have to pat dogs in this animal-loving country." HEDDA HOPPER (nee Edna Furry) of Duncans-ville, about seven miles from where I was born and reared, took a lot of kidding on "Beverly Hillbillies" last night. Not only her hats bore the brunt of Cranny's (Irene Ryan's) gibes. Granny thought she was looking for a millionaire to marry, Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen), no less. "Are you J.

D. Clampett?" she asked. "Why, I'd never take you for a millionaire." "Take him or leave him, he's only one around," Granny said. To impress Jed with Hollywood memories and perhaps convince him not to sell his studio, Hedda took Jed to Crauman's Chinese Theater. Jed was aghast.

"Look! Someone has messed up the cement with footprints and handprints," he said. ABC GLEEFULLY passes along the latest Nielsen ratings (week ending Oct 4) which show the network holding down the first nine places. Another program, "McHale's Navy," is tied for 10th with NBC's "Bonanza." CBS' "No Time for Sergeants." is 12th. The first nine are "Bewitched, "Fugitive." "Addams Family," "My Three Sons," Thursday night edition of "Peyton Place," "Valentine's Day," "Patty Duke," "Bins Crosby" and "Ben Casey." The first 20 is completed by "Munsters," "Wendy and Me," "Peyton Place" (Tuesday), "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Combat." "Beverly Hillbillies," "Dick Van Dyke" and "Saturday Night Movie." That at least, you would expect from the handsome Mexican who throbbed hearts in the silent films and many of the early talkies. But other aspects of the Novarro of today are surprising.

Because of his long career, you think he must be doddering. He isn't. At 65, he is straight, handsome, clear-eyed. His hair is a hit thin, a trifle gray. He isn't. "I worked hard for my money," he says. "Now my money is working for me." Actually, Novarro has always had a good business brain inside his handsome head. He chuckles as he recalls a story of when he was 15, one of the 11 children of a moderately prosperous Durango, Mex RAMON NOVARRO Still handsome After that, he did it all himself. His investments, mostly in real estate, are sound.

He has no family of his own. But his brothers and sisters except for two sisters who are nuns in Mexico and Spain are all close by. And he is a devoted brother and uncle. "I practically raised many of them," he says. "So when I was 35, 1 decided I had family HOURS B.30-6 W.
