BIGHT LIFE THURSDAY, JULY 18, 1996 ENCORE PAGE 7 Village People part of 70s flashback Brown County serves up a musical mixed bag 5 ft i mi VILLAGE PEOPLE headline a 70s disco party at the Oneida Casino Friday night. Prepare for a blast from your 70s past. As part of its second anniversary celebration, the Oneida Bingo and Casino in Green Bay is sponsoring a "70s Flashback Disco Dance Party" with those macho icons of the 70s, the Village People. The group will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in a tent outside the casino.

Opening acts are "Dance Fever" television star Deney Terrio, the choreographer who taught John Travolta how to dance, and dance music diva Vicki Sue Robinson The Beat "The resurrection of disco has become one of the hottest acts this summer," said Pat Krohlow, general manager of HVS Video Productions in Green Bay, who is assisting the Oneidas. "There isn't a WHO: Village People WHEN: 8 p.m. Friday WHERE: Oneida Casino, Green Bay TICKETS: $10 MORE INFO: 494-3401 band that doesn't do a Village People song." Some of the songs made popular by the Village People have become part of the 70s pop culture "Macho Man" and "In The Navy." Think hard now back to when it all began. The group was the brainchild of producer-composer Jaques Morali (he died of AIDS in 1991) after observing Felipe Rose dressed in his Native American regalia dancing with a group of men in a gay bar in Greenwich Village in New York City. This visual image inspired Morali and his partner Henri Belolo to create a singing group that personified American macho symbols.

Rose, who wears the headdress, is the only original member still with the group. The VP hit the charts in 1977 with "Macho Man." After sales of their records From Page 6 Reminisce, 9:30 p.m.-1 :30 a.m. Friday, Remter's, 1 042 W. Wisconsin Appleton. D.J., 9 p.m.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Or so we thought. When disco died in the 1980s, the Village People retired the act. But in the mid '90s, they are hot again. "YMCA" can be heard these days at college frat parties, high school proms and baby-boomer night clubs. Chalk it up to that warm 70s nostalgia.

"Kids listening to music today have missed out on what music really is and feels," Eugene Record, former lead singer for the Chi Lites, told Jet magazine recently. "In the 70s, we had a true sound, true musicians. We worked with harps, violins, real instruments. There's not as much creativity today. It's a matter of pushing buttons." So, what do you say? Want to dance? Tickets for the Village People performance are 1 0 and can be purchased at all Ticket Star outlets, including area Copps Food Centers and the Casino Valet Booth.
