SUNDAY, MAY 26, 1991 SUNDAY POST-CRESCENT, APPLETON-NEENAH-MENASHA Baseball Hatching vactoiry from the jaws off defeat Foxes reliever puts pressure on opposition The two cities are on the list of nine in contention for one of two class AAA franchises when expansion occurs in 1993. The expansion committee will visit both ballparks this week, as part of their tour of all nine, to look over facilities and operations. The list will be pared to between three and five in July, and a final decision will be made in September. Should one or both of the clubs get AAA status, the Midwest League will remain a 14-team league. "The owner (of a club that is accepted) must pick up his team and move it to another area in the Midwest which meets the approval of the league directors," said Midwest League president George Spelius.

Another possibility would be the sale of their Class A club to a group in a city looking to buy a club. A Fort Wayne group which purchased the Wausau Timbers in 1988, but was unable to get the city to build a ballpark, continues to show interest. we played a lot of tight ball games," said Hierholzer. "I'd come in, get a couple outs, and then we'd score some runs, and I'd get the win." Hierholzer and his bullpen mates have helped the Foxes to a 10-5 record in one-run games, and a perfect 15-0 record in games in which they've led after seven innings. "He's come in, thrown strikes and gotten the job done," said Foxes manager Joe Breeden.

"I have a lot of confidence in him, and the whole (bull) pen." Hierholzer came to the Kansas City Royals' organization as an unheralded 38th-round draft pick in 1990, after a five-year college career (sitting out one year) that finished at Kansas State. "My senior year, I was leading the nation in ERA halfway through the season," said Hierholzer, who also attended Cal State-Fullerton and Johnson County (Kan.) Community College. "But my arm got tired, and I faded. I was just happy to be drafted. up a job for the fall.

The former two-sport star at Southern Mississippi signed a free-agent contract with Detroit Lions, and will report to camp sometime after the baseball season. Valrie, though, doesn't see himself following in the footsteps of Bo Jackson or Deon Sanders. "I don't think I'm cut out to play two sports," said Valrie. "I'll probably choose the one I do the best in." Valrie was a free safety on the football team, helping Southern Mississippi earn a berth in the Ail-American Bowl last season. He led the team with six interceptions, and had 70 tackles.

Like Jackson, Valrie has shown the ability to both steal bases and hit home runs on the diamond. He hit two home runs in a game against the Foxes, and has four homers and 14 stolen bases on the season. This is judgment week for the Midwest League franchises in South Bend and Quad Cities. Minor league notes I didn't expect it." Hierholzer, who is 24 on a team of mostly 19- and 20-year-olds, knows he must produce results now or be released. I do feel pressure when I'm sitting around at home," said Hierholzer, who saved nine games at Eugene (Royals' Northwest League club) last year.

"But at the ballpark, I don't worry about it. I think I can do better than the younger guys." Hierholzer is not the prototypical hard-throwing relief specialist, although he has struck out 16 in 14 innings of work. "I throw a slider most of the time," said Hierholzer, who possesses an average fastball. "Most people expect to see the fastball late in the game, but what good is a b.p. (batting practice) fastball at that point." South Bend White Sox center fielder Kerry Valrie has already lined By Jim Youngwerth Of The Post-Crescent Relief pitchers get no respect.

Take David Hierholzer. The Apple-ton Foxes right-handed ace has a 3-0 record to go with five saves and a 0.64 ERA. For that, his fellow pitchers have good-naturedly nicknamed him "The Vulture" for taking wins away from the hard-working starters. True, he has earned each of his wins with two innings or less work, but he's only doing his job as a short reliever. At the beginning of the season, DAVID HIERHOLZER: In the right spot at the right time.
