Marines Promote Wesley Detienne Marine Private First Class Wesley A. Detienne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley S. Detienne of Wellsville, has been meritoriously promoted to his present rank upon graduation from recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He received the early promotion for his superior performance in all phases of the training, which emphasizes physical conditioning, discipline and teamwork. Sgt. Clark In Atlantic Maneuver M. Sgt. John R.

Clark, son of Mrs. Gerry Clark of 803 E. Jackson, Mexico, recently took part in an Atlantic Command joint-service training exercise with his Air National Guard (ANG) unit. Sgt. Clark is an avionics systems technician at Richards-Gebaur AFB, with the 442d Tactical Airlift Wing which participated in the large-scale air, land and sea operation conducted near tamp Lejeune, N.C.

The sergeant provided support for Tactical Air (TAC) strike forces that flew simulated air strikes prior to the airdrop of Army 'troops and close-air-support missions during the assault of the Marine task force in the mock battles. Sergeant Clark's unit was part of the TAC force which served as the Air Force of the unified Atlantic Command. He is a 1964 graduate of Mexico Senior High School. The sergeant's wife, Marjorie, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Dennis W. Rolling, Route .1, Wellsville. Pvt. Laban Haynie Takes Power Course FT. BELVOIR, Private Laban G.

Haynie whose parents live in Farber, completed a power plant course at the Army Eingineer School here. He was trained in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools, gasoline and diesef engines and various electric generators. Timothy L. Johnson, husband of the former Miss Nancy Anne Ollis of Mexico, has received his Lieutenant junior grade rank in the U. S.

Navy. Lt. Johnson, a civil engineer, is assistant safety officer aboard the aircraft carrier, the U. S. S.

America, which is currently in drydock it Portsmouth, Va. The Johnsons reside in Virginia Beach where Mrs. Johnson teaches in the Junior High School of St. Matthew's School. Both Lt.

and Mrs. Johnson are graduates of the University of Missouri at Columbia. Capt. James Cook Is Based At Guam AGANA, James E. Cook, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Paul L. Cook of Rt. 1, Jonesburg, is a member of a Guam-based Air Force unit which played an important part in the evacuation of more than 100,000 Vietnamese refugees to Guam en route to the United States. Capt.

Cook, a transportation officer, serves at Andersen AFB, Guam, with the 605th Military Airlift Support Squadron, a unit of the Military Airlift Command. Sgt. Samila Graduates From NCO School DENVER, Air Force Sergeant Nicolas M. Samila, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Nick Samila of 21 Rock Spring Drive, Mexico, has graduated from the Air Training Command Noncommissioned Officer Leadership School at Lowry AFB, Colo. Sgt. Samila, who was trained in military management and supervision, is a procurement specialist at Lowry. The sergeant, a 1967 graduate of Mexico High School, attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville. Mark Hoffner Completes Course Navy Fire Control Technician Third Class Mark D.

Hoffner, son of Mrs. Dorothy C. Hoffner of Route 1, Auxvasse, has graduated from Basic Fire Control Technician School at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, 111. The 13-week course includes instruction on fundamental procedures for the maintenance and repair of electronic weapons control systems. It also covers electrical safety and the use of related test equipment and tools.

A former student of Mexico High School, he joined the Navy in October 1974. Martin Christen Assigned Cannoneer FT. HOOD, Spec. 4 Martin H. Christen, son of Mr.

son of Mr. and Mrs. John K. Hankins, 1831 Fairground, has completed 9 weeks basic training at U. S.

Navy Training Center, Great Lakes, III. Lawrence DeBondt Visits At Cannes Navy Yeoman Third Class Lawrence S. DeBondt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard J.

DeBondt of 817 N. Kentucky, Mexico, recently visited Cannes, France, while embarked on a Mediterranean deployment aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He and his shipmates had an opportunity to tour the French Riviera and the Alps, or travel to the nearby cities of Grasse, Antibes and Nice. DeBondt is scheduled to participate in various training exercises and visit several other Mediterranean countries during the cruise.

His ship is homeported at Mayport, Fa. A 1973 graduate of Mexico High School, he joined the Navy in August 1973. Robert L. Avery Outstanding In ROTC Robert L. Avery, son of Mrs.

Margaret LaRue of Rt. 2, Montgomery City, has been recognzed as an outstanding U.S. Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) cadet at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He received the Sons of the American Revolution Medal for academic achievement and military excellence. Upon graduation and completion of the AFROTC program.

Cadet Avery will be commissioned an Air Force second lieutenant. The cadet is a 1972 graduate of Montgomery County R-2 High School. His father, Delbert Avery, lives on Rt. 2, Laddonia. FT.

RILEY, W. and Andrew W. Jones, sons of Mr. and Mrs. William T.

Jones, Picnic Road, New Florence, Mo. were promoted to Army specialist four while assigned as clerks in the 1st Infantry Division here. Richard Mahoney Completes Training FT. POLK, Private Richard E. Mahoney, 19, son of Mrs.

Edna Hull, 315 N. Missouri, Mexico, has completed nine weeks of advanced individual training at the U.S. Army Infantry Training Center, Ft. Polk, La. He received general training as a light weapons infantryman and as a mortar and recoilless rifle crewman, in addition to specialized weapons instruction.

He also was taught the proper use of high explosives and the placement, detection and disarming of mines. Teamwork was emphasized while he learned to work as a member of a rifle squad, mortar squad or direct fire section. Each team member completed the training well qualified to perform other jobs in case of casualties. Navy Liertenant (junior grade) Lindell G. Rutherford of 508 S.

Elm, Vandalia, has graduated from the management and supervision of Naval Personnel Course at the Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif. Aston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Aston, High Hill, has been assigned to Fairchild AFB, from Whiteman AFB, Mo. Aston, an Air Force staff sergeant, is an aircraft radio technician with the 92nd Avionics Maintenance Squadron, a unit of the Strategic Air Command. He is a 1951 graduate of South Carter High School in Middletown, Mo.

Sexton Sent To Japan Marine Cpl. William W. Sexton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Fisher of Route 1, Vandalia, has reported for duty with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Iwakuni, Japan.

A 1972 graduate of Van-Far High School, Vandalia, he joined the Marine Corps in June 1972. Sgt. Testerman In 'Rum Punch' Marine First Sergeant Harold D. Testerman, son of Leo Testerman of Mexico, participated in "Rum Punch," a multi-nation training exercise on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. He is a member of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 162, which helped provide logistics and tactical support to naval and ground forces from the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The exercise included amphibious beach landings, tactical maneuvers and weapons practice. It was designed to test the readiness, capabilities and coordination of armed forces units from the three countries involved. Testerman's squadron is homebaaed at the New River Marine Corps Air Station, Jacksonville, N.C. A former student of Lafayette High School, Saint Joseph, he joined the Marine Corps in November 1953.
