SPORTS TODAY WITH JIMMY CANNON Old-Timers Day To Last Full Season For Mets, Colts By JIMMY CANNON NEW YORK The Mets and Colts are populated by familiar strangers. The players on these new teams were sold as -big leaguers. It is similar to calling a special policeman a financier just because he works as a bank guard. This yearthey're promoting an Old-Timer's Day that will last' a full season. In baseball the shepherds aren't on the side of the lambs.

But he is alone responsible for keeping the gifted kids moving -up through the system There has been a tendency also to withhold credit from Dan Topping, the working partner of the Yankee firm. He gave Weiss total independence in the operation of the corporation. There was never a wage-paid executive in baseball with as much freedom of decision. Of Weiss immediately certified this exceptional trust in him.

But I've always been impressed by Topping's unobtrusiveness. It is a big talent in an owner. next season. They became immediate challengers for last place as fast as their teams were put together by the gaffed raffle held in Cincinnati. The contest between Weiss and Richards should be as interesting as the tournament for the pennant him for private reasons. It is their contention that Weiss came to the Yankees after Ed Barrow had established their tradition. But they enviously neglect to mention it was Weiss' astute husbandry that caused the farm system to flourish.

He is the guy who raised the players that eventually found their way to the Stadium to dominate the Sport. They insist Weiss was a fortunate man who worked for a wealthy outfit and he always had a surplus of players to trade. That, they say, exaggerates his importance as a They're like a butcher who stocks the family larder with horse meat. The players they made available are the ones they didn't want. The athletes they unloaded have the same relationship to' their teams as ashes to fire.

I suppose you can sell ict to an Eskimo if you put a pistol to his head. This was a heist. The Mets and Colts had to submit to the holdup. Even the cop on the beat, Warren Giles, president of the National League, was a lookout for the robbers. It is a little like being handed an exorbitant check by a relative They run with the wolves.
