Work on the building lr being rushed and the apartments will be ready for occupancy early in the fall THE MAY FESTIVAL FIRST CONCERT BY STEINDEL TRIO ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED Bruno Stelndel Again Proved MasterMagnificent Concerts This Afternoon and Evening The May festival opened Friday evening vylth a concert by the Stelndel tilo which was heard by a wildly enthusiastic audience composed of all kinds the husband who went under protest because his better half wanted an escort the tempermental Individual who looked thoroughly ecstatic and foolish while was going on the person who went to get culture and was awfully bored but afraid to admit it and Just the ordjnaty every day man and woman to whom music once In a while is a genuine plcasme relaxation and benefit Really the success of the concert was remarkable in view of the handicaps which the hall provided Tho artists were vlslblj worried by the low expansiveness of the rink which swallowed tone as a siee tanes nater Through Inexcusable negligence there was almost no ventilation In the cramped building and the place became towards the end of the concert unbearable But It Is only fair to add that these difficulties aie not to be feared for this afternoon and evening for an orchestra will fill the hall us a soloist cannot and those In charge will undoubtedly remedv the ventilation trouble But the audience bioke Fort Wayne traditions and was lemarkably appreciative and good natured perhaps because It had been ghen to understand that the concert wis perfectly good and thoroughly deseiwn of their applause Mr Stelndel expansive grin is enough to capture a Fort Wayne audience and Friday night he was unusually liberal with this as well as with encores The fact was the program was short ami needed padding HOW ABOUT IT eVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD Is the topic of the Sunday evening seimon lecture at the Wayne Street Methodist Episcopal dmicb corner of Wayne and Broadnaj aoon music seats free A HometLIke Church Claud Travis paMoi Sabbath School 8 30 Morning worship 10 40 a Epworth Leagvw 10 Evening Worship 7 30 but the impiomptu nature of it made it all the more enjoyable To the man up a tree there Is not much to be said about Mr Stelndcls playing It is marked by all the nego tlve virtues an absence of muddiness of unceitainty of tone and of the other naughtinesses which the cello can commit If Its master Isnt a good disciplinarian In addition to this the aforesaid man up a tree notices In Mr Steindels work a richness and Infinite variety of expression a cleanliness and distinctness both of technlc and of idea and in general an air of having something worth while to Bay which are the primaiy vlitues usually last acquired by concert soloists In short he doesnt criticise he just enjovg It is bealthy to bear playing like that and If one has an ear for harmony at all he comes away thoroughly refreshed Hugo Koltsthak who did the violin woik Friday night had his troubles too The king of Instruments generally sheds his Crown when the cello enteia the court room and Mr Kort scliaks violin sounded strangely wheezy and trivial after Mr Steindels big noble music Then Mr Koitschak suffered from a lack of good common sense It was not very flattering to the audience nor creditable to his own taste that he selected for an encore an unaccompanied arrangement of the sextet fiom iAtcla It may have been very wonderful as technical fireworks but it was not music only the cilmlnal mangling of music Mr Stein del did the same thlng an unaccom panied ariangement of Schuberts The Sea in a masterful way bringing Into play appaiently all the marvelous resources of his Instrument His work was artistic taste and good common sense Mr Koftschak can do good work In fact has done here but Friday night he was either unduly flustered by the hall or had an unreasonably low opinion of his audience Feidfnand Stelndel the eighteen year old nephew and protege of the cellist presided at the piano and was a delight His woik was solid finished and balanced and made a tremendous hit with the audience He felt the informality of the occasion sufficiently to play the monkey in a thoroughly amusing way and this did not detract a bit fiom his sprightly plajlng The work of the trio left nothing to be desired The program this evening is a glorious one The first half will consist of the cantata The Swan and the Skylark sung by the local estival chorus under the direction of Professor William Miles The soloists will be Miss Perceval alien soprano Miss Margaret Keyes contralto fJaniel Beddoe tenor and Relnald Werren rath baritone The remainder of the program will i a Wagner group that Is remarkably representative of the composer work consisting of the overture to The Flying Dutchman the prelude to Lohengiln the Ve nusberg music from Tannhauser and the curtain ringer to Das Rhelngold The Morning Musical is still far from making expenses on the venture but a good house this evening will materially help in making up the deficit ARE CIVINUWMIUMS FORT WAYNES MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION TO GET BU8Y Several Members of Organization Said to be Violating the Constitution of Body
