YORK (AP) He was greeted by clicking cameras and went right to work. "I'm sending out some letters, getting my picture taken.

I'm beating last year's record for $4 million in fundraising. We're going for $10 million." The name of this consumate fundraiser? Kermit the Frog, the "first chairfrog" of the 1980 UNICEF fundraising campaign. With his long, green skinny legs stretched out before him, Kermit sat on a table at the organizations's headquarters Saturday talking about the international campaign that benefits children. His constant companion, Muppet creator Jim Henson, was beside him. Asked if he had told fellow Muppet Miss Piggy about his new duties, Kermit said slowly, "Well, yes, I have.

She gave me 25 cents. She handed it to me right then and maybe it was $1 or $5." Margaret Trudeau damsel in danger NEW YORK (AP) "I'd rather be the butt of a good joke than a bad rumor." So saying, Margaret Trudeau has decked herself out as damsel in distress, tied to the railroad tracks, crying for help. She also appears as a birdbrained zoo keeper, clad in hiking shorts and a bush helmet, who loses a boa constrictor on a talk show. Man charged in court stabbing commits suicide By The Associated Press WOOSTER, Ohio A man who was to be arraigned today for stabbing his wife in a courtroom last week hanged himself while in jail Sunday, said a Wayne County sheriff's department spokesman. Shirish Pandya, 45, Army Major at Fort Eustis, was pronounced dead of asphyxiation by hanging by Wayne County Coroner J.T.

Questel. He was discovered in his jail cell at about 7:20 a.m. Sunday. Pandya, an Army psychiatrist, had been charged with aggravated murder in the stabbing death Friday of his former wife, Mary 38, at a custody hearing for their three daughters. Sheriff's deputies said Pandya had left the courtroom just before the hearing.

A short time later, he returned with a knife and attacked his ex-wife, the officers said. Deputies said a few witnesses but no court officials were in the courtroom at the time. Sheriff's department spokesman Glenn Smith said Pandya had shown jailers no indications of being suicidal since being imprisoned Friday. He was being held on $100,000 bond. Margaret Trudeau And, of course, she ends up with that classical slapstick accessory, the pie in the face.

These are among the "good jokes" on "Big City Comedy," a Canadian version of "Saturday Night Live," where she makes her satirical TV debut this fall, People magazine says. The show also will be syndicated in the United States. After flings with rock stars, photography and the disco set, and with a movie to her credit, the estranged wife of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau says she's "very happy and quite fulfilled." She lives in a small red-brick house near the prime minister's residence in Ottawa, and mothers her three children, ages 8, 6 and 4, on alternate weeks. "I feel I'm pulling my weight as a parent," she says. "Maybe in three or four years I'll spend more time on a career and on myself." Betty Hutton back, in 'Annie' NEW YORK (AP) In 1940, Betty Hutton made her Broadway debut at the Alvin Theater in "Two for the Show," and catapulted into films with her "incendiary blonde" looks.

So there's a touch of nostalgia as she returns to the Alvin 40 years later as Miss Hannigan in "Annie." She'll be filling in for Alice Ghostley while Miss Ghostley takes a threeweek vacation. Miss Hutton, 59, has had a long bout with alcohol, pills and breakdowns, but says, "I'm OK "I almost committed suicide," she said during a rehearsal. "I owe it all to God. I'm a Catholic now. My family is back again.
