The grant is the result of fund-raising events organized by the Society of the Arts, the Paine's volunteer support group. Arts Challenge Initiative grants, which are based on a comparison of funds raised during a designated challenge year with those raised during a base year, are designed to encourage organizations of their individual fundraising efforts.

The amount of the award is determined by a legislatively established formula. FREMONT Registration is being accepted for the second Gre-mont Arts and Crafts Festival July 22. OSHKOSH The work of Peter Feldstein, whose use of color, texture and shape is more akin to painting than it is to the photographic medium in which he works, has gone on exhibit at the Priebe Art Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The exhibit continues through Feb. 27. The artist will attend a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb.

21 at the gallery in the UWO Arts and Communication Center. He will give a lecture at 10:20 a.m. Feb. 22 in Room 218 South and a critique at 1:50 p.m. in Room 212 South, both in the Arts and Communication Center.

Feldstein, once a photographer for Parade magazine in Europe, developed his unique technique for creating photographic art, or "photographic markmaking" as the artist has called it, after learning how to draw in 1976. "I realized that I could make marks with the photographic image in the same way that I had with the drawing materials," said Feldstein. In 1987, Feldstein began to draw on the negatives by scratching and etching the film surface. Soon he was no longer putting the film in the camera but exposing it to light and developing it before working on it, resulting in contemporary "cliche verres" prints that essentially duplicate a process originated by some Pre-Impressionist painters. "I am constantly developing new methods of making marks," said the artist.

"My images have always been unique and personal." Priebe director T.C. Farley said the "exhibit will be especially attractive to the student of photography who wants to see work that is anything but traditional, work that is as close to painting as it is to photography." 1 I 1 1 Hi I'll 4 1 rh IV it, 1 i i THIS 30- BY 40-INCH Cibachrome print by Peter Feldstein is an example of his photographic marking technique which has been described as akin to fine art Examples of his work are on display at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and he will attend a reception and give a presentation and critique later during the exhibit. The public reception is slated for Feb. 21 Arts calendar AGA member exhibit hits 30! The Appleton Gallery of Arts has opened its 30th members' midwinter working exhibit. The exhibit features a record-breaking 175 works of art by 68 artists in a wide variety of media.

A public reception is planned for 2-4 p.m. today. To help celebrate the event, the featured guest artist for 1990 is the late El Jahr, who served as AGA director from 1981-87. El Jahr was a highly regarded water-colorist and handmade paper artist whose artistic influence was and programs that they shared with fellow artists and fnends. Today, the AGA continues to reach out through its monthly exhibits and education programming to promote, teach and nourish the creation and appreciation of the visual arts.

AGA has blossomed into an organization that today owns its own building and is embarking on the refurbishing of the lower level of the facility. The improved and renovated space will give additional exhibition and studio areas. felt by many area artists, art ap-preciators and educators during the short time he lived and worked in Appleton. In 1961, a small group of artists, dedicated to the visual arts, came together with a shared need to have a place to display and create their work. From these small beginnings has grown an organization supported by 500 artists and those who appreciate the arts.
