Does our finger-length measure our assertiveness, our sexual orientation or our predisposition to a heart attack? For the past five years, Louise Freeman, assistant professor of psychology at Mary Baldwin College, has been studying hands and fingers. Along with her senior thesis students, Freeman has been measuring the fingers of students ait Virginia Military Institute, Mary Baldwin College and the University of Virginia hoping to ring fingers exhibit less physical aggressiveness then men with longer ring fingers.

Women with shorter or equal length ring fingers, according to the studies, tend to be more fertile and have a greater propensity toward breast cancer. Freeman says, the fingers' length varies with race and ethnicity. "The study of length of fingers 2D referring to the index finger, 4D referring to the ring finger), is a relatively book "Digit Ratio: A Pointer to Fertility, Behavior and Health," as a resource. According to both professors, Manning has uncovered relationships between finger lengths and such varied illnesses as heart disease and breast cancer.
