expectations was ho first army service race test a contest designed to determine the stamina gen rraU fitness clas and type of the American cavalry horse This test took pierce yesterday the start and finish at the Benning race course the contest being held under the auspices of the Washington Ridins and Hunt Club The striking feature of this oontest and one that stands out boldly is the positive demonstration of the superiority of i lie thoroughbred as a horse foi general army service This was conceded by nrmy officers and others yesterctay afternoon when a thoroughbred St Angelo that had raced from his 2 yean otd form until two years ago finished twvnty minutes ahead of the fifteen other horses hat entered the contest The thoroughbred surely won his place fluxing the lay not only by the splendid perform ince of St Angelo but by the performances of others which easily outclassed he other cold blooded horses that congested Lost Through an Accident It was a matter of general regret that St Angelo could not be declared the winner but under the conditions the horse had to be penalized for an unfortunate occurence at the in and out Jump a few miles from the finish where his rider Lieut St John GreAle military attache at the White House slipped nff his mount to keep the horse from going dows for which rfc suffered a penalty of four points Aflsr more than two hours discussion and deliberation the judges awarded the first placei to Maj Henry Aliens thoroughbred Razzie Dazzle II ridden by the owner which rame in second along with Masterpiece another thoroughbred ridden by Capt Rhodes rf ihe Fifteenth cavalry The second place was given to Capt Verne LaSalle Rockwells Mariposa a horse that Is sven elghths thorougbred and was shipped to Washington for the special purpose of starting in the service test Society Out in Force The service st was one of seven unusually interesting eontests on the closing day of the Hunt Clubs inaugural meeting and the attractions offered brought out a big attendance of society folk Scores of army officers were on hand to see their comrades ride and there were hundreds of brilliantly frowned women who thronged the clubhouse lawn and grand stand Benning has not in many years presented a mon attractive picture than It did yesterday Kvrryhody who figures in the elite of Washington was there and there were many moro from New York Philadelphia and other cities A feature that was not on the program hut one that occasioned a great deal of interest was the visit of two army aeroplanes driven by Lieut Milling and Capt Chandler The two flying machines arrived in the middle of the afternoon and Lieut Milling descended in the infield later returning to College Park Overshadowing even the steeplechases not only in the attention of the army set but to the public and the men who make racing a pastime and business was the service test The sixteen contestants and all were unusually fine looking animals the pick of the army were cheered when they were sent on their 14 mile Journey by Starter Frank Bryan and just 69 minutes later when Lieut Greble entered the grounds a round of applause went up that lasted until the officer had made the circuit of the steeplechase field and dismounted in front of the grand stand It was not until twenty minutes after ward or a lapse of one hour and ten minutes from the starting time that MaJ Allen and Capt Rhodes rode leisurely into the Benning infield and sauntered over the steeplechase course winding up at the judges stand with their horses going at a gentle gallop The other contestants came in at Intervals and there was apparently no effort on the part of any of the riders with the exception of Lieut Greble to finish as soon as possible Lieut Grebles father Col Greble of the general staff of the army although fourteenth at the finish was given the third place All in Excellent Condition In deciding the winner and the place horses the judges who were army officers and civilians the latter Including Mr Perry Belmont and Mr Redmond Stewart of Baltimore were influenced entirely by the rules which provided that the awards should be made upon the performance of the horses during the ride and the condition of horses and riders at the finish Maj Allen and Razzle Dazzle were the only ones who were given excellent for both horse and rider St Angelo was conceded to be among the freshest of the horses but the penalty imposed for his rider falling put him out of the contest A striking feature of the test was the generally good condition of horses and riders There was hardly an animal if any that could not have gone on for another 14 miles and the remarkably good condition of the riders showed that the army possesses among officers some horsemen who can hold their own in any country Course a Difficult One The course of the service test was across country for 3 miles with nine obstacles at intervals 9 miles over roads nnd trails and 2 miles on turf and track This course led the horses and riders through many difficult places at one a steep bank with an angle of 60 degrees having to be taken while at another the horses had to flounder through a bog half a mile long where they went down to their hocks in mud With all the difficulties and rough riding however there was not a single accident and every one of the sixteen contestants finished within the time limit The test was pronounced by the army men as a gTeat success and it will be a feature of the future meetings of the Hunt Club Records of the Horses St Angelo the first horse to finish was a successful racer In Texas as a 2 year old never being defeated in his first year on the turf He won steeplechases later in his career and is now 7 years old having bepn used as a service animal in San Antonio Tex for the last two years Maj Allens Razzle Dazzle II never was raced but has been used as an army horse for the last two or three years He was foaled in Virginia stands 16 1 2 hands high two races in the course of the day In the Army and Navy cup at 21 4 miles on the flat Lieut Rockwells Matabon against which liberal odds were laid disposed of the favorite Goldwick after a mile and three quarters had been covered and won pulled up And in the Henry of Navarre steeplechase at 21 3 miles Miss Hynes got to the wire a length in front of Knight of Blway The latter and Miss Hynes had the race between them Grayfelds falling at the first fence and being outrun all the way In the stretch it looked as if Knight of Elway had the race won but Miss Hynes under a vigorous ride by Lieut Alexander nipped the Knight in the last few yards The Rock Creek cup for hacks and hunters at a mile and a quarter on the flat went to Mr McMurtrles Fyre an accomplished steeplechaser who won easily from Nosegay with Orcagna third The latter1 saddle girth broke inside the last quarter but he was beaten at the time Close and Thrilling Finish The closest and most thrilling finish of the afternoon came in the Washington Riding and Hunt Club cup steeplechase at 3 miles in which there were but three starters Guardian Garterette and Du pree Garterette was the choice over Guardian and these two were the contenders after Dupree had made the pace for a mile and then retired Tommy Wright rode Guardian with much skill and turning for home it appeared as if he had the race at his mercy Mr Al pers on Gartette however sat down for a desperate ride and gradually overhauling Guardian he got up in the last jump to win by a short head In the final event of the afternoon the Benning cup Apache and Absconder had a hard struggle with the former winning by a neck and Dullcare third The Summaries The Service Test About 14 miles Razzle Dazzle II 180 Maj Allen first iiarl Psa 32 Capt Rockwell second
