Jammed by a fastball from Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang in the seventh inning Sunday, Zimmerman had one thought as he stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth, his Washington Nationals down by a run: Let's hope he tries throwing that same pitch, because I'm ready for it. Sure enough, with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera forced into a day off, Zimmerman drove Wang's 107th pitch of the day over the wall in left for a game-winning, two-run homer. Having lifted Washington to a 3-2 victory over New York, his Dad in the stands on Father's Day, Zimmerman morphed into a kid on a sandlot, raising a fist as 12 birdies lead to final-round 59 By Ken Bosserman Sports Writer STAUNTON' Andrew Bartley and Bret Chambers sizzled the Gypsy Hill Golf course with a 12-under 59 Sunday to capture the 17th annual N.L. Deaver Team Championship by one stroke.

Bartley-Chambers' two-day 66-59125 just edged Gary and Grady Ruckman, who posted a 65-61 126. The Ruckmans were one of three teams that were tied for the lead after the first round. Mark Lunsford and Columbus Hagy finished tied for third with a 65-66131, but Doug Shifflett and Rich Whitmore couldn't match their first round 65, settling for a 73. Bartley-Chambers, who finished second in the tournament last year, fashioned their 12-imder with 12 birdies and no bogeys. Birdie holes included Nos.

4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 on the front nine. Four more birdies, those on Nos. 10, 11, 13 and 15 sent them to 9-under. Then on No. 16, Bartley chipped from 40 feet to within two inches of the cup for another birdie.

He then rolled in an 8-footer on No. 17, and his team was 11-under. Then on No. 18, Chambers' second shot on the par-5 hole was on the green 15 feet from the cup. He missed his eagle, but the birdie sent the duo to 12-under.

"Bret was hot on the front, and I found my game on the back nine," Bartley said. "We hit the ball solid," Chambers added. "We hit it where we needed to, and made putts. We didn't do anything off the wall." Grady Ruckman had a 65 on his own ball to key his team to its 10-under round. "I have been playing good the last three or four weeks," he said.

"I have been putting a lot better, and when that happens, everything goes right. Unfortunately, we were one short, but you can't complain when you lose to a 59." The Ruckmans didn't get hot until the back nine, and that came after a bogey on No. 11. "That got us fired up," Grady Ruckman said. "We went nuts after that." On No.

13, Grady Ruckman hit his tee shot within five feet of the hole, and eagled out. After Gary Ruckman birdied No. 14, an eagle followed on No. 15, and birdies on Nos. 16 and 17.

With a chance to tie for the lead, the Ruckmans could only par No. 18, missing a 5-foot birdie putt. At the banquet which followed the tournament, T.J. Sheehan received the N.L. Deaver scholarship which goes to a graduating senior on the Robert E.

Lee golf team, a squad that Deaver coached for many years. Sheehan plans to attend the San Diego Golf Academy of the Carolinas in Myrtle Beach and earn an associate degree in business management. He said he'd never done that before, at any level: "No walk-off nothing single, anything." "I looked pretty bad the at-bat before on that same pitch," the third baseman said. 8 Columbus quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the spread out pack. Adkins was able to close in at times late in the race, but Ruley went on to win his first Virginia Mini-Cup feature at Shenandoah. Adkins, Corey Berkstresser, Ryan Adams and Kevin Berkstresser rounded out the top five. "I knew I had to keep it hugged down in one and two, that's the best groove for these cars didn't have any problems, just hooked up today," Ruley said. Adkins said, "Every time I got close to him, I would mess up off of two through the bumps through three and four was OK." SVSRL Mini-Cup: Ryan Peacher led flag-to-flag, beating Brandon Chilson, Chris Chilson, Steven Cox and Gene Jones in the process.

U-Car: With an unique complete field inversion, the feature started with David Dean on the pole. He quickly pulled away, while the large pack was making three and four-wide passes. At the end of an entertaining feature, it was Dean earning his first trophy in front of Tim Brown, Chris Headman (Import winner), Eric Stanley and Beaver Dean. David Dean said, "This was my first win and it was a long time coming." Beaver Dean now leads Greg Abbott by 25 points after previous points leader Abbott crashed out early. www.newsfearfer.com Abandoned Staff Report SHENANDOAH USAC Ford Focus Midget driver Bradley Riethmeyer had been in the shadow of points leader Chase Scott for most of the season until Saturday night.

That's when the 22-year-old Texas driver took the pole and the win in convincing style at Shenandoah Speedway. "The track tightened up a little bit and the car was really good," Riethmeyer said. "It's been tough trying to beat Chase, but we kept working hard, learned a lot got in the top 10 last week it's been good." At the drop of the flag for the start of the USAC 35-lap feature, Scott jumped to the point from eighth, but the start was called back because of a spin by Aron Oakley in turn 3. Not long after the second start, Chase spun in turn 2 unassisted. Ryan Scott took over the lead when leader Tyler Brown pulled into the pits just a few laps in.

By lap 4, Riethmeyer moved under Scott for the top spot as they entered turn 3. Once out front, Riethmeyer steadily pulled away from the pack by nearly half a straightaway and into the winner's circle for the second time this year. During the closing laps, the young driver eclipsed his qualifying times by several tenths of a second. Rounding out the top five were Aron Oakley, Ryan Scott, Brad Nofsinger and Mark Burt. "Man, he was quick on the restarts," said Oakley.
