between Newport and Boston were broken It was learned Wednesday night iy the automobile that bore Mr and Mrs Samuel Jones Wagstaff from Harborview on Tuesday night after their wedding eceptlon The auto was the big touring car of Mrs Alfred Vanderbilt and It made the trip from Newport to the Hotel Somerset In Boston a distance of sixty eight miles in one hour and fifty seven min utes The Wagstaff who was Miss Pauline French offered this prize to the chauffeur just after the machine left the main en trance to Harborview amid a shower of rice She knew that outside the grounds there were a number of automobiles some of them containing photographers intent on taking snapshots of the bridal pair The machine shot out of the driveway at a tremendous pace and the police of Newport who reared to realize the object of the racing speed made an effort to halt It The occu pants of the other autos were taken completely bv surprise but they Immediately gave chase It was In vain however for the Van derbilt car had been thoroughly gone over during the day and it was in first class trim One of the chasing autos broke down five miles from Newport and before twenty miles had been pass ed the last auto was left out of sight behind the Vanderbilt machine which was then running at more than fifty miles an hour The pace was even increased on the smoother roads In open country The bride is action for a legal separation or divorce Friends of the family said they knew Mr Smith and his wife had disagreed but there jet remained some hope that a reconciliation would be reached The marriage of Mr Smith who is a descendant of Ell Yale who founded Yale University took place after Mr Smith had left Lee Mass the town in which he had spent most of his life A large stock farm at Lee which had six weeks ago in Mr Smith leaving the Best house He had become Interested in the paper industry and It Is said Mrs Smith ob jected to the manner in which her hus band spent some of his time when not at business At the residence of Mrs nest it was saia noDoay mere Knew where Mr Smith now lives and that he had not been at the house since he left six weeks ago Friends of Mrs Best said they had heard that Mrs Smith had consulted an attorney In relation to her matrimonial difficulties and that an action had been brought against Mr Smith A young woman who said she repre sented Mrs Best went Into a newspaper office yesterday and left the following notice Papers have been served upon Elizur Yale Smith in a suit brought by his wife who was formerly Miss Annie Best The young bride and her mother have all the sympathy of their friends Efforts made to find either Mrs Best or Mrs Smith Wednesday night were unsuccessful Persons at the residence of Mrs Best said It was expected that she and her daughter would return to New York Monday next It Is rumored that Countess Gladys Szechenyl lias consented to participate In the great historical pageant which has been arranged at Vienna In honor of Emperor Francis Josephs sixtieth jubilee as a ruler next week It Is understood that sIm will accompany the Hungarian nobles delegation and that she will Impersonate the great Maria Theresa Queen of Hungary and Empress of Germany Maria Theresa Is the only Hapsburg the Hungarians ever loved and loyally supported When Frederick the Great threatened her Austrian capital she fled to Ofen now Budapest and with her baby at her breast made a stirring appeal to the nobles for aid a scene commemorated in song and picture hundreds of times The Queen of Hungary was then a young woman not much older than the Countess Szechenyl of to day and the American heiress will represent her In full state dress flowing robes of gold brocade a royal Vurple mantle and a crown upon her head She will ride in the procession on a milk white palfrey led by pagesln magnificent trappings Descendants of the great nobles that came to Maria Theresas aid in her hour of distress will precipe and follow the Queen each prince baron or count heading a troop of retainers in full war harness CountrSiecbenyT has offered to ride the Queens wake at the head oi twenty men at arms dressed In the full panoply of knighthood Emperor Francis Joseph left Scboen brunn Wednesday1 for the first time In two months and went to Vienna to greet the royal personages who are arriving for bis jubilee The King of Wurtemburg and other notabilities already have rived Mrs Marshall Fields Chicago home In Prairie avenue presented a beautiful scene Tuesday night in honor of tin Italian Ambassador Baron Mayor des Planches and the baroness Covers were laid for an exclusive twenty The decorations were colonial in design and brought about by means of gardenias lilies of the valley and roses KUlarney and American Beauties Mrs Field her self was resplendent In white satin and pearls and diamonds It Is noteworthy that much of the conversation was car ried on in fluent Italian although Chev alier Guido Sabetta the vice consul Jn Chicago was the only Italian present beside the Ambassador except the baroness An addition to the party for the musical programme which followed was the dinner nartv which wft carried to the residence of Mrs Field by Mrs Hugttl Birch Mrsi Fields guests were Mr and Mrs Watson Blair Mr and Mrs Hobart Chatfield Chatfleld Taylor Mr and Mrs Bryan LathropMr and Mrs Robert Mc Cormlcli Mr and Mrs Harold McCor rolck Mr and Mrs James Waller Mr and Mrs Kohlsaat and Judge Grosscup Mrs George Gould and Mrs Stuyvesant Fish had a heart to heart talk last Sunday It was a dialogue In one act en titled Our Boys Mrs Gould has been deeply worried by the failure of young KIngdon to take his degree at Columbia College His unfortunate affair with the bazers and the revolver in his freshman year frightened her exceedingly It was source of great anxiety to her and justly so ror it was doubtless the prime reason for his failure to matriculate While Mamma Could was brooding over this lamentable matter she received an invitation from Mrs Fish to run up to Garrisons and pass the week end Vith her Mrs Fish is a sympathetic soul She has a sturdy son of her own who had passed triumphantly between the Scylla and Charybdis of a course at Yale and she could appreciate the feelings of a mother whose young hopeful had been plucked In response to Mrs Fishs Invitation Mrs Gould arrived at Garrisons last Sat urday The two ladies were not long In coming to the mutually interesting subject Mrs Fish recalled with pride how Stuyve had gone West after leaving college hunted tip a job as freight clerk in a railroad office in Chicago at 15 a week and was working his way manfully up She dwelt so eloquently upon the results of this experiment and expatiated so convincingly upon the hero making qualities of the West that Mamma Gould then and there decided on a plan which is now be ing put In force Instead of going to Europe with his family as he had expected the young man will spend his summer grubbing in the mines of Colorado and Nevada Next fall he will return tp New iork and start lr on a four years course at the School of Mines with a view to becoming an expert mining engineer Thus Is again Illustrated the truth of the aphorism that the hand that rocks the cradle rubles the world An engagement of much interest just announced is that of Miss Edith Holt of New York daughter of henry Holt of the well known New York publishing house to br Joseph Colt Bloadgood associate professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Miss Holt has devoted much time to not the Frank Goulds have kissed and made up one thing is certainMrs Frank is learning to econ omize No longer 800 coats and 90 hats are necessary to her happiness At least she gets along without them at present Her latest economy about which the Connecticut colonies are agog with gossip Is In the matter of her summer home at Greenwich Last year she occupied the Laflan man sion at Bele Haven which is a regal es tablishment For this season she has leased a much more modest home the Stanley Tyler cottage of the same hamlet If we want good mothers in the United States we will have to import them is the conclusion arrived at by Wilbur Philips secretary of the Infant milk committee of the Association for Improvlne the Condition of the Poor In twenty eight uptown block In the neighborhood of the Plaza where the population is exclusively of the rich only thirty seven children were bom in one year he said In four blocks on the East Side containing a corresponding number of people 370 children were the years record These statistics were offered for the consideration of the Rainy Daisies jes terday at the Hotel Astor by Mr Philips In proof of his assertion that the American mother is physically unable to nourish her child throughout the allotted peroid Among the better class only 10 per cent have proved equal to this task Twenty per cent can support the baby through six months and 25 per cent through three months In the words of Mr Philips where one woman can and wont nurse her children ten would and cant Mr Philips outlined the plan of the seven infant milk depots the commute will establish on June 1 These will supply modified milk at nominal rates tnr habies a trained nurse will be on duty to give advice to mothers and visit fl lng nurses will go to we nomes oi ine poor Fifteen times as many oapies wno are fed artificially die each Year as those that are fed naturally said Mr Philips arguing that the only way to decrease infant mortality was to make the mother nurse the child Jle cited mothers clubs In France where an Infant was taken as an example and praise or blame given for Its treatment Similar organizations will be started here Mrs Unthlcum In the name ot
