MATCHES TO HARVARD MCKETERS Doyle Brothers Among Those Who Give Way to Team Headed by Norris Williams National ChampionCordon and Bundy Save Whitewash Special to The Washington Foit Havre je Grace April 22 A hundred dollar horse captured the Chester Selling Stakes at Havre de Grace this afternoon defeating the high priced Mlramlchl a former member of the aristocratic Whitney stable Kewessa js owned by Billy Oliver a Scotchman ong a familiar figure on the American turf erstwhile owner of Lord Badge and Warrenton Kewessa came to Billy Oliver from Or Tyree who thought the horse would no train but Oliver who has always been noted for his remarkable success with cripples kept nursing Kewessa alongjjntil to day he is one of the fastest and gamest sprinters jn training it has been many a year since Billy won a stake with one of his own He came close once to winning the Jimencan Derby with Warrenton with good as 100 to 1 quoted against him in me winter books Warrenton was beaten as the turf guide has It by a whisker It was natural therefore that the old Scotchman was elated when his horsey under a long drive In which he proved his gameness should earn the flecision over MiramichL It was a comfort too jfor Billy has had his troubles lately his brother George a pal as well as a brother Ijlng now very ill in the hospital at Hare de Grace Kewessa Home by a Head Kewessa under the skillful riding of Butwell just got home bv a head There were seven starters and Kewessa was the choice At the break Kewessa was shuffled back but Butwell got him to going quickly and after a quarter had been runj he had headed Miramichl Turning for home Mlramlchl carried Kewessa ivery wide and kept bearing out in the lun through the stretch but Kewessa jand Butwell stuck to their work and were rewarded by victory Kingly coming up on the rail and saving a lot of ground was beaten only a neck Mrs Sidney Jose phthal of Warrenton Xn journejed all the way from her Virginia home to see her husband ride Racebrook to victory in the steeplechase which was next in interest to the stake Three ell supported horses in the race met with mishaps but that does not detract from the brilliancy of Kacebrooks victory Mr Josephthal apparently was not ready for the break and when Starter Milton gave the field the flag Racebrook was standing still Milton had to wave Racebrook on before Mr Josephthal realized It was a go Then with rare lAdiirfltrmoTiti At TnQnhthl vcaryt offer fiio jiuiot nc iuu iiui ujr iu vaiuu them Jn the first furlong but gradually made up ground and after a half mile had been He easily disposed of Wooltex the leader and came on to win with plenty to spare Abdon the favorite ran disappointingly He lost his rider Booth and the jockej was severely shaken up Dupee on Little Hugh also suffered Injuries The last race was a sensational one Tlgsewater running for Samuel Ross Washington turfman was apparently out of the race at the start but Ambrose sent her along and gradually picking up her horses she overhauled the leaders In the last 50 yards and won going awav midst the shouts of the Virginians led by Billy Garth TODAYS RACING ENTRIES Havre de Grace FIRST RACE lotals 463 523 4S0 Washingtons picked combination of tennis players including the Poyle brothers Connie and Rol rated as our very best products on the courts fell before a quartet from Harvard Un ersity headed by Uorrls Williams national champion in singles yesterday at Chevy Chase club Out of six matches four in singles and two In doubles the home talent was only able to win once the honor going to Spencer Gordon and Harvey Bundy and this in the last contest of the series While the Crimson racketers came and conquered they left no sting as the beaten players were wjlllng to admit that they met their sportsmanlike masters and a huge gallery that braved an intermittent rain and cold has no regrets to offer It was the best tennis Washington has seen In many a day if ever And it may be Well said that everybody was satisfied Doyles Words Are Impressive Main interest of course centered In the meeting of Connie Doyle and Williams and while the pride of this section fell by wide margin scores in bare points he put up a great battle and gav way to a man whom many deem the moat expert player in the the United States today But a mere glance at the figures of the two sets which ended 6 2 and 6 1 do not half tell the story or give Doyle his due There was really only one angle of the game In which the champion outclassed his opponent and this was the depth of his shots Doyles words at the close of the match are expressive of the balance of power He said He got them back too fast and too deep for me and he hit them just as hard with his backhand as he did with his forehand Hes what I call a finished tennis player But probably this latter title should come to me Is No Pingpong Game But it was no pingpong game from either side and it is doubtful whether Williams ever faced an adversary who hit them harder than Doyle since he took the title from Maurice McLough lln the California speed king last fall Williams and Doyle both drove the ball with a desdly Velocity at all times Their tvIco was backed by a force that few would be able to comeat but neither was able to get the first one in very often and they seldom let up on their second try ana the visitor was guilty of 13 double faults while Doyle made only 5 But Doyles statement heretofore quot 1 ed soeaks clearly XeUWHIIams 5 Doyle 14 Paises Williams 7f Dojle 2 Aces Williams 2 Recapitulation Total points Williams 01 doubles over the Doyle brothers and the counts were 6 4 3 6 and 63 Doyle stayed out of the singles on account of a recent illness and showed that he lacked his usual strength In the doubles Connie Doyle and Williams continued in the stride of their previous match while Caner brought Into the set another ferocious serve This latter factor and the inability of Rol Doyle to get his regular Impetus to his serve proved the undoing of the home pair This match brought out more sustained rallies than that in the singles and Williams again displayed some of his deep court drives at critical periods Caner found it extremely difficult to handle Connie Doyles serve and Rol Doyle as well as the other three made some of those impossible returns Here is the summary FIRST SET WilUams and Caner the second match of doubles Gordon and Bundy turned the trick too after dropping the first set They got going after this though and by a dispjay of team work and superior individual prowess were Thursday A great many people ln this countryare probably wondering today why It has taken Woodrow Wilson two years and more in the WhlteHouse t0tell the nation I Jove America A great many Americans are wonder ing perhaps why the President of the United States places more faith Jn words than In deeds I will suggest an answer 1916 These same two rears or more during which Woodrow Wilson has been the President of the United States have witnessed the outbreaking on earth of a was unparalleled in magnitude and with out parallel Jn Us effects direct and Indirect upon this country These years have as well given birth to other international complications affecting us the ultimate end of whch no man can at the present time foresee Basis of Neutrality Tet It remained for the occasion of an Associated Press dinner on April 20 1915 for the President of the United States to tell the country which he represents that he loves it The text upon which President Wilson spoke was Neutrality The basis of neutrality gentlemen said the President Js not Indifference it is not self interest The basis of neutrality Is sympathy with mankind It Is fairness It Is good will at bottom It is Impartiality of spirit and judgment I cannot agree entirely with this definition of the basis of neutrality I am inclined rather to the opinion that While npntrnlltv iinilniilitnrnv Imnllon fairness it implies at the same time Indifference Were one to sail close to the wind of logical Interpretation he would be compelled to discover In the word neutrality the religious refraln ment by noncombatants of giving any assistance moTal or otherwise to either belligerent Has America Been Neutral I do not think that President Wilson could rightly say that he has either supported or even encouraged a neutrality of this sort Our memories are not short We review the acts of the administration from the beginning of the war We ask ourselves if we have as a nation been neutral in the highest sense of the word The answer cannot but be No The words which President Wilson un 3 ed soeaks clearly cr where the tide his hard battle with Gordon he Jumped turned as a perusal of the summary Williams scored 61 points to Doyles 43 Doyle made 27 nets to Williams 11 This accounts for the difference of all save two points Another thing the recapitulation will show is that Williams only made
