in Rich mond and Baltimore friends who took an interest In his work i ana ieit mat ne naa tne makings or a major league ball player There Is no question that he could make good as a fielder but whether or not he would be able to uphold his end with the stick causes many of his admirers to pause and think a while Inky realizes his present weakness aa well as any one else and not until he Is convinced that he will make good in every department will the offers receive much attention One of the most valuable players on the Cornell club who has perhaps been overlooked by critics is Catcher Noyes who in the opinion of many is the best amateur catcher in the District today It is probably not generally known that he Is considerably handicapped in his work because of a bad foot and considering this fact his play Is all the more Impressive As a pegger he has few equals and this fact has been demonstrated in the post season games in which he was one of Cornells dependable players Few realize Just how much Negotiations are now pending between figured But for his accurate pegging the managements of the local team and those of the Battle Axe of Richmond and Maryland Athletic Club of Baltimore and if an agreement is reached the Trust Company players will make the trip to each city for the purpose of playing match games with the champions Despite the fact that his team failed to land In the money President Howard Reeslde of the American Security and Trust Company who looks after the Interests of the team feels that his boys were a victim of unfortunate circumstances and that the club is as strong as any other team in the District He Is more than satisfied with their playing In the post season series and Intends to reward them with a trip that will more than repay the squad Last season the Bankers gained a great many friends in both Richmond and Baltimore The youthful appearance of the team and their clean tactics called forth general approbation and there Is no ques there Is no question that the F5wr team would have been easily returned the victor It will be recalled that on a number of occasions he threw out men on the bases who If they had reached the bags In safety would have scored In picking an all star team It would be decidedly unfair to overlook the veteran whose work has been one of the features In amateur baseball for a number of years Soma might argue that he is a weak sticker but statistics would show that he Is not so far behind the best stickers among District amateur catchers And what he lacks as a hitter Is easily balanced in other departments BEDS BEAT PIBATES TWICE First Game Is Pitchers Battle but Second One Is Slugfest Cincinnati Ohio Sept 1 Cincinnati won both games of a double header from tion that a game this year despite FOR SECOND POSITION BEGINS IN HOLIDAY CONTESTS Athletics Here in Full Pprce and Intent on Preventing Local Outfit From Leading at FJauflhJohnson to Go in One Game and Plank to Start for Athletics BY JOE JACKSON Washingtons real baseball fight that for second position will begin today when the Nationals hook up with Connie Macks team in two battles The Athletics at present are two and a half games behind Griffiths charges and entirely out of the fight for the pennant which most of the critics conceded to them before the season started Washington has no better chance really though standing better mathematically But it is fighting for a place a claim to which when the teams started the race would have been laughed at The Athletics came in yesterday from Boston where the Red Sox by taking three in a row ended even those slight hopes that Connie Mack had entertained that he might pull through by making a great run through the stretch Mr Mack did not accompany his team dropping oft at Philadelphia for a few hours He arrived last night to be on the scene this morning Connie has no thought of stopping now and means to force ihe Nationals to earn second position if they land it Plans for the Pitching Pitching plans for today are somewhat uncertain Johnson will go In one contest for the Nationals and Hughes is the logical choice for the other These are the only veteran experienced pitchers eligible as both Groom and Cashion worked in the New York series pitching the last two games It is expected that Plank will be on the slab for the Athletics In one contest and either Brown one of Macks 1912 finds or Crabb a recruit who beat Detroit last week in the othen In the outfield the visitors will show a couDle of players new to this city In Murphy and Walsh recently secured from Baltimore In a trade that involved the passing of some of the Athletics veteran talent Moran the outfielder secured by Washington from Chattanooga will be in uniform and may be put into the game in place of Moeller The latter Is suffering a hitting slump and It has been Griffiths recent policy to replace a man whose batting is falling off by some newcomer wherever possible to give the delinquent one a rest and a chance to come back Kenworthy will continue in left field and Laporte at second in this series Games in East Interest In the American League the Only holiday games of any Interest will be those in the East The contests in this city are of some moment because of the fight for second place Those at New York will his work in the second game with Pepeol be watched closely The Highlanders hope to stop Boston though there is no TWO GAMES WITH CHAMPS AT BALL PARK TODAY Todays games at the ball park will be started at 10i30 oclock and at 3 oclock On Tuesday the final game with 1 gie sculls which follow closely afterward tlonal regatta They may have their hands full to dispose of the Vespers of Philadelphia this afternoon Starter May Be Missing There are fears that Regan of New York who is the official starter of the races will be unable to attend the regatta He has been staying at Asbury Park and last night It was reported that an illness from which he has been suffering would make it impossible for him to make the trip If he does not appear another member of the national executive committee Burke president of the Malta Boat Club will be named to Officiate Every one of the races will be at a mile the course being laid from a half mile above the Three Sisters with the finish line about 500 feet below the Aqueduct bridge Each crew will carry a number the rowing matters was one of the arrivals yesterday and was the first of the out of town newspaper representatives to make the scene John Nolan of the local committee is in charge of the press arrangements and his selection for this post is one of the strongest proofs that those in charge have the right idea about conducting a regatta All Crews Busy Sunday Diligent preparation for the crucial tests of today marked the work of the various crews yesterday All day long the river was dotted with shells and the sun kissed water was made to ripple In rhythmical fashion until the rays had become hidden In the west Washington has entrants In seven of the events so the local lovers of the sport will be afforded a chance to display their enthusiasm at frequent intervals during the day While the Capital oarsmen will be pitted against the cream of the talent of the East their followers expect to keep some of the glory and medals at home One crew especially on which they pin their faith Is the Potomac junior eight which must match blades against the Analostans and Ariels of Baltimore in the feature race of the morning The smooth watermanship shown and the condition of the men has caught the eye of the experts of the game and they have been made the favorites In the opening race of the program the junior single sculls Mueller and Walter Thrall will face three other starters two from Philadelphia and one from New York and while the local boys do to tak tjhe measure of the Ariels of Baltimore and the Fairmounts of Philadelphia Then the next event in which Washington crews will face the gun is the crowning one of the day the senior elgjit oared shell in which the Potomac will send two entrants to the line against five of the best octets of the East While thej Potomacs are sure to make a noble try In this event they would go beyond all hopes should they shoot across in front CEICKET MATCH ON TODAY Captains and Vice Captains raams to Play at Rock Creek Park There during the morning They start the afternoon events though by being represented in the opener the junior double sculls in which Mueller and Thrall of the Potomacs will be called upon to pit their endurance and skill against four other entrants three from Philadelphia and one from Baltimore Washington has a grand chance In the intermediate eight oared shell race which comes in the middle of the afternoon events In this race the Potomacs and Analostans have only the New Rochellea of New York to beat and It Is confidently expected that one of the home crews will turn the trick though visiting
