Oppose High Apartment Houses on Sixteenth Street Because of Wealth of Open Spaces The Sixteenth Street Improvement Association met last evening at the residence of Mrs Henderson with John Joy Edson president presiding to consider the danger of a possible influx of tall apartment houses on thst thoroughfare The association it was announced will petition Congress to pass the bill Introduced In the Senate last year by Senator TYorks limiting the height of future buildings on Sixteenth street to 70 feet It will also be recommended that the same limit be applied to all residence etreets Welcomes Apartment Houses This organization believes in and welcomes apartment houses if not higher than allowed for private residence buildings namely 70 feet it was announced It was added that apartment houses 85 feet high not iy discouraged the erection of residences for a considerable surrounding distance but also decreased the value of all such property 50 per cent All members of the association it wvj said want Washington to be a me del city worthy the emulation of other towns yet in the interest of beauty and general welfare residence avenues need further protection by our government Fortunately and unlike congested cities members declared Washington does not lack In ample open spaces and prices for land are not so excessive that there Is any excuse for our residence thoroughfares anywhere and everywhere being pTactlcally ruined by towering apartment houses Ask Protection From Menace The residents of Sixteenth street it was argued feel that their avenue especially needs protection from such menace in that it contains at present so many open spaces Members also emphRslxed the Importance of the future proper development of Sixteenth street In that It has every natural advantage for becoming one of the finest resident avenues In America having the same width of Pennsylvania avenue 160 feet from house to house and a length of 7 miles running centrally and straight United Kingdom who are willing to place their services at the disposal of the United States government for war work now has on foot the further scheme of training the volunteers here for military service The registration thus far totals about 1000 and includes men in a great variety of occupations ranging from expert construction engineers to teamsters In fact the volunteers have come forward for every variety of work useful in war Out of this 1000 there are several hundred who are willing to undergo military training and it is proposed to organize them into a sort of militia to be drilled by city of London national guardsmen The training will be carried out so as not to interfere with the regular occupation of the volunteers It is understood the British authorities are willing to afford every facil ity and the American society believes it can prepare the men here so that if the Washington government wants the men for service they will not have to return to the United States blast furnaces The unusual activity caused excitement among selling interests and resulted in an advance of 3 to 5 per ton In prices of pig iron and of scrap The Steel Corporation alone purchased nearly 90POO tons of old material and the Jones Laughlln Steel Company took 40000 tons of the 75000 tons of bessemer iron sold Other independent steel companies bought about 35000 tons of bessemer
