The volunteer services of the Ninth Judicial District is soliciting contributions from local merchants to establish a halfway house in Clovis for juvenile offenders. Spikes said the juvenile probation office cannot send all juvenile delinquents to the New Mexico Boys School in Springer or the New Mexico Girls School in Albuquerque. "It costs," he said, "over 000 per child each year at those institutions." Spikes said children sent to the slate institutions "are not really helped" and "return to the community to commit new crimes in more sophisticated ways." A large house located at 712 Rencher has been leased, opening the way for the halfway house in Clovis. Spikes said the house needs repairs and furnishings. "We have been offered assistance from Cannon Air Force Base in remodeling the house and different groups and churches are helping with the furnishings." Spikes said the volunteer services office would like to have $10,000 on hand as an operational budget for opening the halfway house in February.

"The money will be used to employ house parents and provide food and other needed items that have not been received through community contributions." Spikes said checks should be made out to Youth Opportunities Unlimited, a non profit cooperation of citizens in Curry and Roosevelt counties. Contributions are tax deductible, he I said.
