The Advocatc7C AMUSEMENTS Sunday, October 2, 1994 Pirates of the Mississippi jump ship, set new course album, Dream You," and just this year put out its fifth, Best of the Pirates of the Mississippi." Currently, the group is recording a followup in Nashville's Loud Studio with James Stroud producing. So far, the sessions have yielded five songs, Alves said, which will be featured on a new album for a new label. An announcement of that signing should be coming this month, he said. By JOSEPH WILLIAMS Advocate Reporter The Pirates of the Mississippi have jumped ship, replaced one buccaneer with another and are now sailing in search of a hit record. Guitarist Rich Alves admits he isn't quite sure what direction the group will take.

"Shoot, I don't know what direction," he said. "The direction of hits, I hope. We just keep plugging. I guess the next direction is Tuesday, the group will headline the Coshocton County Fair, performing at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstand.

A single and video are slated for release in late October. The new album should follow at the beginning of next year, he said. Between the recording studio and video shoots, the Pirates continue to play live about 190 dates a year. Shows range from private parties to clubs, fairs and big concert venues. "They're paying, we're playing," Alves said.

"We're a band. You have to come see us live to understand what the Pirates are about." Tuesday, the group will headline the Coshocton County Fair, performing at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstand. Grandstand seating is free with admission to the fair, but track seating costs an additional $2. Alves predicts a lot of fun, a lot of jamming.

It's a party." The band plays "everything from blues to bluegrass," he said, and the members enjoy seeing fans dance and kick back." A self-described party band, the Pirates have also tackled the serious issues of homelessness and gay-bashing in their self-penned tunes. Alves admits the group's musical influences are diverse. Our roots stem from George Jones to Lynyrd Skynyrd," he said. the next song we put out. Steel guitar player Pat Severs left the group three months ago "to pursue other things," Alves said during a telephone interview last week from Nashville.

"He's just ready to do other things," Alves said. He just got tired of being a Pirate J' The band auditioned several steel players before tapping Greg Trostle of Knoxville, to serve as a sideman, Alves said. The rest of the original lineup remains: singer Bill McCorvey; bassist Dean Townson; drummer Jimmy Lowe; and guitarist Alves. After releasing five albums on Liberty Records, the Pirates have apparently left the label. "They couldn't get the job done so we left," Alves said.

"We feel like we handed them plenty of good product." That product included four studio albums and one greatest hits collection. The group's self-titled debut album spawned the band's biggest hit, Feed Jake," and helped earn the title Best New Vocal Group from the Academy of Country Music in 1991. The second and third albums, "Walk the Plank" and "A Street Man Named Desire," helped solidify the band's reputation. The movie will be released again for the Thanksgiving-Christmas season, and a video will follow.

Ellen Haas, head of the Food and Nutrition Service, said the department needs that kind of reach. "The only way we're going to change children's behaviors is to tie our health messages to the most popular and powerful messengers of today," she said. Burger King, in fact, used a "The Lion King" promotion to sell hamburgers and french fries, and the movie has generated more than 1,000 different "Lion King" products in the United States. Frank said there's no contradiction in promoting fast foods and healthful eating. He noted the department's own emphasis on a mix of foods rather than singling out good and bad food.

In a two-year deal, Walt Disney Co. will produce animated nutrition messages with the two characters. The messages will be broadcast on the Disney Channel and given to all TV stations. The messages also will appear at the front of two Disney video releases a year.

Richard Frank, chairman of Walt Disney Television and Telecommunications, said Friday in a telephone interview the first messages should begin appearing around March. Making "Bullets Over Broadway" with Woody Allen was sO good that Tilly longs for another Allen role. The movie opens this month. Tilly's waiting for her encore invitation, according to the upcoming issue of Parade magazine. In the meantime, she has accepted a part with Richard Chamberlain in "Bird of Prey," though she's not looking forward to shooting the movie in Bulgaria.

So, what was it like working with Allen, whose career lately has been overshadowed by his private life? "One theme of his movie is to separate the art form from the artist," said Tilly, the 32-year-old younger sister of actress Meg Tilly.
