appointed officers In the Indiana artillery regiment was badly mixed These officers were appointed for Battery the unit which left this city July 2 and who are in the federal service at Port Benjamin Harrison That organization has but One Fort Wayne man as an ofllcer Lieutenant Luther Mertz of West Creighton avenue The new jnen assigned to them were Sergeant Peck who was on headquarters detail on the bolder and rgeant Joseph Messenger also of the headquarteis cpmpany The latter was battalion bugler on the border last summer He is a previous service man having been In the British Itoyul iiitillery in India for twelve ears No changes have been made In the personnel of the commissioned personnel of Koit Waynes second artillery contingent Battery All of the officers of this organization are Fort Wayne men and have many years of military training Captain Harry Clark will head the battery and Is well known In local business circles having been claim agent for the Pennsylvania company at this point for several years He was connected with the Indiana national guard for thirteen years eight of them as captain of Battery retiring In 1913 upon his transfer to Cleveland 0 Senior First Lieutenant Leonard Wood is a Pennsyl vania engineer residing on East Woodland avenue He was first lieutenant of the Huntington company of the 180th Indiana Infantry In the war with paln and served in Cuba for nearly a year He was connected with the old battery In this city for eleven years retiring as captain in 1914 upon the removal of the command to Purdue university Junior First Lieutenant Le Hensley has been In the artillery branch of the jcgiilar army for thirteen years most of that time as a seigeant on the Sixth Field at Fort Riley Kan He saw service In the Philippines and at the time of the border trouble last year was acting as Instructor to the artillery units in this state The men of Battery elected him as an officer and he served with that outfit on the border last summer Upon the organization pf the new battery he transferred to It Senior Second Lieutenant Ferd Sclieffer was a member of Ratery li In the days when it was located heie serving for nearly ten years When the call for service came last summer he very materially assisted In organizing Battel and served it on border duty as ranking duty Bergeant He was employed In the offices of the Nickel Plitc Railway company in this city prior to entering miliary service Jinior Second Lieutenant Henry MorlarJty served in the 28th Indiana battery from this city during the war with Spain and was a charter member of Rattery upon its organization lie seived In that unit for thirteen years eight of them as senior first lieutenant When the border trouble broke last summet he assisted in recruiting Battery and served with it as senior first lieutenant until its return to this city in March Upon the organization of the new battery he transferred to It He is employed in the sales deportment of the Northern Indiana to crops by yesterdays rain storm with the exception of a small area north of Fort Wayne where a quantity of wheat which had been cut and left lying in the fields was washed Into a creek and floated away While the crops throughout the county are suffering because of too much rain yesterdays shower did not cause any great damage throughout the county according to the county agent An unusually heavy shower flooded a comparatively small district about three miles north of Robison park and sent a small creek put of its banks George Tonkel Henry Kleber and Joseph Till through whose farms the
