The Advocate LOCAL Friday, March 2, 2001 Deaths and funerals Calendar John King Jan. 31, 1921-Feb. 28, 2001 A funeral service for John D. "Jack" King, 80, Thornville, formerly of Somerset, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the BopeThomas Funeral Home with the Rev.

Gene Dawson officiating. Burial will be in New Lexington Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Somerset American Legion Leo Ryan Post 58. Mr. King, a World War II Army veteran, died Feb.

28, 2001, at his residence. He was born Jan. 31, 1921, in Somerset, to the late Miles D. and Alice Dittoe King. Mr.

King was a member of Carpenters Local Millwright 200, Thornville AmVets, and was a 50-year member of New Lexington Eagles. He is survived by: his wife of 55 years, whom he married Jan. 17, 1946, Alma K. Allen King of the home; sisters, Helen E. Hatfield of Thornville, LaVerne C.

Gall of New Lexington, Rose Marie Cotterman of Somerset and F. Joanne Hilliard of Thornville; brothers, Fred King of New Lexington, and Robert D. King and Gene King, both of Somerset; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-brother, Donald King; and sister, Irene Stayton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Saturday at the funeral home in Somerset. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 1435-B W. Main Newark, Ohio 43055. Eileen M. Smith Feb.

11, 1917-Feb. 27, 2001 A service to celebrate the life of Eileen M. Smith, 84, of Newark, will be held at 1 p.m. today at the CrissKirkpatrick-Schoedinger Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Myers, grandson, David Richards and niece, Carol Myers officiating.

Burial will be in Newark Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Smith, a retired cook for Restaurant, died Feb. 27, 2001, at LPN Healthcare Facility. She was born Feb.

11, 1917, in Newark, to the late Thomas A. Powell Sr. and Marie E. (Glaunsinger) Powell. Mrs.

Smith, who also assisted her father with Powell Orchards, was a 1937 graduate of Newark High School. She was an active member of Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Dorcas Welfare of the church. She is survived by: her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald (Irene) Smith of Warsaw, and Richard "Dick" (Marilyn) Smith of Newark; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Jesse) Wolford of Walhonding; grandchildren, David Richards, Charles Richards, Raymond Richards, Kelly Sylvia, Kimberly Cunningham, Doug Smith, Kathrine Vickers, Jennifer Smith, Amanda Smith and Jessica Wolford; 10 children; two great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Tom (Betty) Powell Jr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her sister, Juanita Myers; brothers, Donald and Robert Powell; and grandchildren, Ronald and Christopher Smith. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Ohio or the American Diabetes Foundation.

Lloyd Lee Ranck Feb. 14, 1905-March 1, 2001 A funeral service for Lloyd Lee Ranck, 96, of Glenford, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hopewell United Methodist Church near Glenford, with Pastor John Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Glenford.

Mr. Ranck, a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, died March 1, 2001, at Genesis Good Samaritan. He was born Feb. 14, 1905, in Columbus, to the late Pearson J. and Cora Shadwick Ranck.

Mr. Ranck was a member of Linden Lodge 634 and was a former member of Glenford Grange, Farm Bureau and National Huguenot Society. He is survived by: his sons, P.J. (Nancy) Ranck of Gratiot, and Terry Ranck and Dale (Janet) Rank, all of Newark; grandsons, Alan Mark Mitchell and Wade A. Ranck; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife of 46 years, Eleanor Hailey Ranck in 1983; and sisters, Helen Smith and Viola Adel Carrel. Koch Feb. 28, 2001 A memorial service will be held at a later date for Mary F. Koch, 89, of Westerville, formerly of Mount Vernon, who died Feb. 28, 2001, at Westerville Manor Care. She is survived by: her sons, Gary (Carolyn) Koch of North Carolina, and Tad (Carol), Koch of Colorado; grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer and Melissa; and great-grandchild, Joshua.

(AP) Edward Bassett, who nurtured two generations of reporters, editors and photographers as a journalism professor, died Thursday of liver disease. He was 72. Bassett led journalism programs at five major U.S. universities, including the University of Washington, and spent four years as executive editor of the Statesman Journal in Salem. In 1993, he won the nation's top award for journalism school administrators, presented by the Freedom Forum.

Bassett also served as president of both the American Association Schools and Departments of Journalism and the Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a sister, and four grandchildren. Hermann H. Field SHIRLEY, Mass. (AP) Hermann H.

Field, who cowrote two novels with his cellmate while imprisoned in Poland during the Cold War, died Friday. He was 90. Field was imprisoned by communist authorities in Poland from 1949 to 1954 after he was arrested while looking for his brother. To pass the time in prison, he and Stanislaw Mierzenski co-wrote "Angry and "Duck Lane," which were published after the inmates' release. "Angry Harvest" was the basis of a TV drama presented by Kraft Theater in 1958, and a German film by Agnieszka Holland, which was an Academy Award runner-up for best foreign film in 1986.
