probability the publishers of the country will pay their war tax In the form of a 2 per cent levy on advertising This appsard the likely solution of the Renate finance committees problem as to a newspaper tax yesterday when representatives of the greatest publications in the country conferred with members of the committee There was almost a unanimity of opinion on thejart of newspaper publishers trade Journal representatives farm paper editors and those speaking far the big magasines that a tax on advertising was preferable to an increase inrostal rates The Hardwlck amendment to the tax bill providing increase in flrat and scond class mail matter came in for strong denunciation by a majority of the publishers as unjust and unfair Meredith representing the farm papers said a small postal increase would put 50 per cent of the journals out of business and a 2 per cent Increase suggested by the Postofftce Department would probably crush them all Baker speaking for the Newspaper Publishers Association urged th advertising tax as the fairest and most equitable for all concerned at the present time All declared that far more revenue would accrue to the government through an advertielng tax than by an increase in postal rates Against Chicago Exchange Operators Chicago June 2 Indictments i of eggs in the Chicago market were returned before Judge Landil in the
