September 28, 1980 Sunday Apoleton-Neenoh-Menasha, Wis. fc-J Schlichter aerials top ASU South Carolina hands Michigan 17-14 loss COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Quarterback Art Schlichter set a school record with three touchdown passes Saturday, propelling second-ranked Ohio State to a 38-21 romp over Arizona State in a matchup of college football unbeatens. Schlichter, a junior, now has 21 touchdown passes in his career. That breaks the Ohio State record of 19, shared previously by Schlichter, John Borton and Rex Kern. Schlichter threw six completions to flanker Doug Donley, two of them for touchdowns of 23 and 10 yards.

He also found split end Gary Williams for a 13-yard score. Schlichter accounted for 310 total yards. He completed 14 of 19 passes for 271 yards and ran 15 times for 39 additional yards. Schlichter's best performance of the season lifted the Buckeyes to their third straight victory before 88,097 fans, the 73rd straight sellout crowd at Ohio Stadium. The loss was the first for the Sun Devils in three games this season.

Mike Pagel, Arizona State's quarterback, threw for two touchdowns, finding tailback Robert Weathers from 3 yards out and split end John Mistier from 12 yards in the closing moments. Pagel, a junior, hit 24 of 49 attempts for 286 yards. He threw 39 passes in the second half for 205 yards. Fullback Tim Spencer and tailback Calvin Murray, the Buckeyes' top ground gainer with 93 yards, each scored touchdowns from a yard out. The Buckeyes' kicking specialist, Vlade Janakievski, connected for a 20-yard feld goal, giving him 11 straight over the past two seasons.

He has hit all eight of his attempts in 1980. Defensive end Bryan Caldwell returned a blocked punt 46 yards for the Sun Devils' other touchdown. Southern Cal tops stubborn Gopher '11' goal late in the third quarter to give Southern Cal its 10-3 lead. The Trojans, who also have beaten Tennessee and South Carolina, meet Arizona State next Saturday in Los Angeies. Arizona State was the last team to beat Southern Cal, a 20-7 upset in the third game of the 1978 season.

Syracuse breezes by NU MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Marcus Allen rushed for 216 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns and Gordon Adams passed 29 yards to Kevin Williams as No. 5-ranked Southern Cal turned back stubborn Minnesota 24-7 Saturday. The Trojans, who are unbeaten in 23 straight games dating back to 1978, only led 7-0 at halftime against the aroused Gophers, who were humiliated 48-14 by USC a year ago in the Coliseum. USC, 3-0, had trouble getting unpacked until Allen, a junior tailback, began taking advantage of the gaping holes created by the Trojans' huge offensive line. Minnesota, 1-2, had cut a 10-0 lead to 10-7 on Marion Barber's 16-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter.

But Allen, the latest in a long line of great USC tailbacks, raced 20 yards for a touchdown with just 3:30 remaining. He also scored on a 37-yard jaunt with 1 :02 left to silence the near-capacity crowd of 55,115 at Memorial Stadium. Trojan safety Ronnie I.ott intercepted three passes, the second of which set up USC's first touchdown in the second quarter. Adams was sacked by ihe Gophers on a third-and-four situation at the Minnesota 29, but the Gophers were penalized for having 12 men on the field. On the next play, Adams hit Williams in thecornerof theend zone for the wide receiver's 23rd career touchdown reception.

Iowa State's defense preserved the victory in the final minute. Iowa drove to the Iowa State nine yard line but Cyclone linebacker George Jes-sen batted down a Pete Gales pass on fourth down with 50 seconds left in the game. Iowa State sent its record to 3-0 before a crowd of 60,145, only five short of Iowa's alltime record. The Hawk-eyes fell to 1-2.

Quinn put Iowa State on the board first when he hit the 6foot-7 Knuth with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 14:05 left in the second quarter. An interception and a 49-yard return by Larry Crawford set up the touchdown. Bobby Stoops' interception set up Iowa's only TD, which came on a 20-yard pass from Phil Suess to Doug Dunham with 9:41 remaining in the Five TD BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Senior quarterback Tim Clifford threw five touchdown passes, including three to flanker Nate Lundy, as Indiana ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) South Carolina's All-America tailback George Rogers ran for one touchdown and fullback Johnnie Wright plunged for another in the second half to lead the Gamecocks to a 17-14 comeback victory over Michigan in a non-conference college football game Saturday.

Rogers, the 6-2, 220-pound Heisman Trophy candidate, gained 142 yards on 36 carries through a Michigan defense that was stacked to stop him. Michigan, which lead 14-3 at the half, took the second-half kickoff and drove all the way to the South Carolina 8 where, on first and goal, fullback Stanley Edwards swept around his right side and fumbled the ball into the aid zone where the Gamecocks' linebacker Walter Kater recovered. South Carolina then drove 80 yards in 14 plays to score on a 2-yard plunge by Rogers and narrowed the score to 14-10. A key play in the drive was a pass interference call against Michigan which nullified what appeared to be a drive-killing interception by Michigan free safety Tony Jackson. Michigan took the ensuing kickoff, but tried a fake punt on a fourth-and-one situation on the Wolverine 29 yard line.

Edwards was tackled for no gain and South Carolina needed only seven plays to strike for the go-ahead TD with Wright diving over from the 1. Michigan quarterback John Wang-ler threw touchdown passes of 9 and 3 yards to wide receiver Anthony Carter in the second quarter and South Carolina kicker Eddie Leopard booted a 26-yard field goal. South Carolina is now 3-1 while Michigan slipped to 1-2. After a scorless first quarter, Michigan spotted South Carolina a 3-0 lead on Leopard's field goal. Then Wangler drove the Wolverines 80 yards in 11 plays, capped by his 9-yard touchdown toss to Carter who took the ball away from Gamecock strong safety Pat Bowen when both went high into the air for the ball near the right corner of the end zone.

Michigan held South Carolina on the next series of downs and took over on its own 32 yard line, rather than its own 5, after the Gamecocks lost 27 yards because of a personal foul on Troy Thomas' first punt. Only 1 19 remained in the first half when the Wolverines finally got the ball, but Wangler needed just 1 14 to drive Michigan to its second TD. The drive covered 67 yards in 10 plays with the score coming on a 3-yard swing pass that Carter took over his Florida State first time in 19 regular-season games, dropped to 3-1. Kelly's touchdown and Miller's conversion kick gave Miami a 7-0 lead with 41 seconds left in the first half. The scoring drive covered 76 yards in six plays.

The key play in the march was a 48-yard pass interference penalty which gave the Hurricanes a first-and-goal at the Florida State 1-yard line. Kelly scored on the next play. Officials said the injury wasn't serious, but that they were no taking no chances. Belue's other touchdown pass was a 28-yarder to Chuck Jones just before halftime, giving the Bulldogs, 4-0, a 20-3 advantage. Robinson contributed field goals of 31 and 36 yards.
