Nolan's key bases-loaded hit followed consecutive singles by George Foster, Dan Dnessen and Dave Con-cepcion.

Nolan, who joined the Reds June 14 as a free agent from Atlanta, is batting .500 in the last 11 games he has started and is hitting .341 since joining the team. Giants 6, Astros 5 San Francisco completed a sweep of its three-game series with Houston when Rennie Stennett singled in the bottom of the 12th after singles by Jack Clark and Darrell Evans. The Astros took a 5-3 lead in the 11th on a run-scoring single by Enos Cabell and an RBI double by Terry Puhl, but the Giants tied it again in the bottom of the inning when Stennett doubled in a run and scored on Jim Wohlford's single. Mike Rowland got credit for the victory, his first major league decision. Mets 5, Pirates 3 Lee Mazzilli and Jerry Morales knocked in two runs apiece to pace New York over Pittsburgh despite being outhit 12-4.

Mazzilli, who had to leave the game in the fifth inning when he was spiked on the heel at first base, had a two-run double in the first inning and later scored on Morales' sacrifice fly. JACOBSEN RIDERS Tlx Associated Press If the Cincinnati Reds go on to repeat as National League West champions this year, they can look back on the last three nights as the turning point of the season. While their closest rivals for the title, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros, both lost three games in a row to second-division clubs, the Reds swept a three-game set from the San Diego Padres to take over first place. On Wednesday night, Mike LaCoss allowed only three hits over six innings, one of them a three-run homer by Jerry Mumphrey, and Mario Soto, 6-5, got the victory with three innings of hitless relief as the Reds beat San Diego 4-3. The Cincinnati runs came on a two-run single by Joe Nolan in the fourth inning and a two-run homer by Ray Knight in the eighth.

In other NL games, the San Francisco Giants completed a series sweep by beating the Astros 6-5 in 12 innings, the Atlanta Braves won their third in row by blanking the Dodgers 2-0, the New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3, the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Montreal Expos 7-5 and the Chicago Cubs edged the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1. The Reds now lead Los Angeles by a half-game and Houston by one as they took over first place for the first time since May 16. On June 22 they were seven games out. Knight's homer, his Uth of thesea-son, came off Bob Shirley.

"This summer is the first year cycling has been high on my list (of priorities)," she said. "My main interest is to go back to school. I want to take a year off and think about it. Competitive sports may be a thing of the past." She is a second-semester student in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin. A speed skater since she as 7, Heiden says it may be time to rest and plan for the future, away from hoopla like that which accompanied her during the Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid, N.Y., in February.

Her brother, Eric, the best speed skater in the world, won five gold medals and similarly took up competitive cycling. She was favored to win two gold medals, but won a bronze instead in the 3,000 meters. She later complained that sports-writers had built her up so much that she was weary from pre-race pressure. Oberkfell's double highlighted a three-run seventh inning that broke a 4-4 tie. He also had an RBI single in the third, when Ted Simmons added a two-run double.

Braves 2, Dodgers 0 Atlanta completed a three-game sweep and knocked the Dodgers out of first place as Tommy Boggs pitched a fivehitter for his second shutout of the season. Burt Hoot on, who had won seven of his previous eight decisions, gave up a two-run homer to Glenn Hubbard in the second inning. The Dodgers right-hander now has allowed 19 homers this season, a career high. Cubs 2, Phillies 1 Jerry Martin hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chicago its victory over Philadelphia. Rick Reuschel and Dick Ruthven, who suffered his eighth loss in 18 decisions, were locked in a scoreless tie through seven innings before Larry Biittner doubled in a run in the eighth and Mike Schmidt tied it in the too of the ninth with his 30th homer.

However, at one point she said: "I had a lot more fun at the '76 games because I was just another competitor. I loved it. I competed in only one event." She was more responsive to questions about cycling.

"I got into it through skating." she said. "It was part of my training." Heiden won the National Road Cycling Time Trials in 1979. Two weeks ago she won the women's senior divisions in Colorado. She is a favorite in the same division here. She expressed no preference between the two sports, but there is one thing about skating that she likes better than cycling, she said "In skating, you are competing against the clock.

You just want to see how fast you can go. One of the problems with cycling is that you have to beat somebody, not just run a fast time, but beat somebody," she said. Eric is now in Norway going to school. After the Olympics it was expected that Eric and Beth would be seen daily in television commercials. She said hustling trinkets or hawking cereals does not appeal to the Wisconsin family.

"We are real selective. We wouldn't mind doing something like the Special Olympics. Besides, our salability has said. Peter Ueberroth also promised that the Los Angeles games would play iown commercialism and be operated and financed for the first time ever by a private group. Ueberroth commented at an Atlanta news conference Wednesday while introducing the animated eagle Sam, the official mascot of the 1984 games, who is on a 24-city tour that began last week.

"These Games will be different, obviously much different than the Moscow Games in every way," he said. For the first time in the history of the Olympics, he said, the Games will be financed and administered by, a private nonprofit organization, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, with $4(K) million budgeted for the July 28-Aug. 12, 1984, event. Ueberroth said the committee already has sold the television rights to ABC for $225 million and has received close to SKKl million from corporate sponsors. Bo Matthews walks out of Charger camp SAN DIEGO (AP) Fullback Bo Matthews has left the San Diego Chargers' training camp in an apparent move to force the National Football League team to trade him. Coch Don Coryell said Wednesday the one-time University of Colorado standout "asked to be traded, but this is not the way todo it. The way to do it is to look good in a ball game so somebody wants you." Matthews was the Chargers' No. 1 draft choice in 1974. He had his least productive NFL season last year, gaining only 112 yards in 30 carries Emm Vv THIS IS IT AUGUST 1980 Consumer advocates recommend the month of AUGUST for buying your chainsaw.
