THE WASHINGTON POST FRIDAY DECEMBER lf 1905 INDIANS PILE UP SCORE Georgetown No Match for the Carlisle Redskins SLUE AND GBAY OUTCLASSED Local Elevens Defense Shattered and the Offense Crushed in the Thanksgiving Day Game at National Paik Sub stitntes Score Thirty four of the Points Indians Win as They Please Swept by an overwhelming attack that carried everything1 before it Georgetown went down in the worst defeat ever suffered by a Blue and Gray team at National Park yesterday when the Carlisle Indians won the culminating contest of the reason by 76 to 0 Their defense shattered and their offense crushed the Georgetown warriors did not have a ghost of a show before the awful onslaught of the red mens offense which was irresistible From the first whistle to the final expiration of time In the second half It was evident that the West Bnders were to receive an awful drubbing and the only question was what would be the final total which the Indians would pile up Pennsylvania and Harvard are the only colleges In the East on the Carlisle schedule that have succeeded In defeating the Indians and in both of these games the aborigines showed such fine form that although defeated they forced their pale faced brethren to work to the utmost to avert a defeat A crowd of nearly B000 braved the cutting southwest wind that swept the field to see the great Carlisle eleven coached by George Woodruff give an exhibition of the greatest of all American college sports and so well did the redmen perform their task that practically all were satisfied with their afternoons pleasure While she went down In crushing defeat Gforjretown had one consolation and that wap that she gained more ground against the Indians than did her arch rival Virginia in the game over a month ago In that game although the men of the Old Dominion he Id the redskins to a small score they were able to advance the ball for but two first downs while the Blue aid Gray yesterday had at least the satisfaction or gaining three first downs on thp visitors Indians Win as They Please The usual order of the game was simply fr the Indians to receive the ball and then straight away carry It up the Arid lri yards at clips of from 5 to 25 yards until it finally rested behind the goal line Georgetown fought and fought hard but it a no us The team work and scd of hrr opponents together with a rural advantage in the Georgetowns goal on no less than eight occasions by downing the runner when he had cleared the line ana was sailing or a touchdown Brcnnon Pallen Jnd Cockrell several times earned applause by throwing line and Porter got a touchdown in three plays Sheldon ran for the last touchdown before time was called and the firs half ended 42 to 0 At the beginning of the second half Carlisle put in practically a new team In order to give the scrubs who have helped develop the first eleven a show Although the second team did not play so well together Georgetown was so worn down after the hard work In the first half that the substitutes rolled up 34 points Dr Reilly made only two changes putting in Greene and Monahan in place of Pallen and McGowan who were pretty well battered up Within four minutes of the beginning of this period Sheldon wiggled his way across the big line for a totaendown and Charles brought the score tp 48 by kicking goal After1 the ball had been carried to with ii 5 yards of their lin Georgetown recovered and Immediately punted but th kick went only 10 ards and Porter went through for a touchdown on the sfcondplay A kick from a close formation fooled the Blue and Gray and getting the ball on the 30 yard line Porter car red it across The next two touchdowns were made In quick succession by Porter arid with the score 72 to 0 Charles kicked a beautiful goal from the 35 the most stubbornly contested game that has been seen onffrank 1m Field this season and It wM only after Cornell had been weakened vby the substitution of playerB that the Pinnsyl vanlans were able to cross the JJnacans goal line For one hour the local eleven toad been held In check and really outplayed by the visitors and it began to look as though the Cornell boys were to be the victors but after they had made their touchdown and the elevens had changed goals Pennsylvania aided by the stiff wind gradually forced the ball down the field for a touchdown In the first half Cornell outplayed Pennsylvania in all departments Of the game with the exeeption of kicking The visitors gained 125 yards by rushing against 72 for Pennsylvania Twice they had the ball within striking distance of the Quaker goal line but each time Pennsylvania braced and took the ball The score does not correctly show the relative strength of the two elevens for Pennsylvanias fumbling habit which had been temporarily cured suffered a relapse and prevented the local eleven from scoring at least two additional touchdowns Twice they pushed the ball from midfleld to within 5 yards of the Cornell goal but on both occasions there was a fumble and the Ithaca boys kicked the ball out danger Pennsylvania did not play with its usual dash and plainly showed the ef lects of the Columbia game last Satur day Ithacans in Fine Form Cornell on the other hand was in superb condition and played better than at any time this season Neither team was able to score in the first half but early In the second half Cornell aided by the wind forced th ball Well within Pennsylvanias territory After Cornell had carried the ball to Pennsylvanias 20 yard line the Quakers held firmly and took it away from the Ithacans gheble kicked the ball back ant Cornell got it on Pennsylvanias 50 yard line From this point the visitors carried it over for a touchdown without losing It Their main ground gain waa a revolving mass on tackle which the Penn sylvanian eleven seemed unable to stop The touchdown was made at the corne of the gridiron and the punt out was no heeled by Halliday who dropped to th ground Thii failure cost Cornell the point which would have tied the score The elevens then changed goals and She ble was able to outklck Walder on a average of from 10 to 15 yards Pennsyl vania soon got the ball on Cornells 35 yard line About this time Capt Costello and Half Backs Walder and Gibson who had been the mainstay of the Cornell eleven were forced to quit the game because of the fierceness ot the play Pennsylvania taking advantage of this condition started into play harder than eve and soon carried the ball over for a touch down The touchdown was mado carei ly in front of the posts and Shebe kicked an easy goal giving Pennsylvania the victory Thompson left guard of the Cornell eleven was sent to the side lines In the opening half for deliberately striking Stevenson This was the only player ruled out of the game although Umpire Edwards more than once cautioned men on both teams Big Crowd Present There was a great crowd present when the two teams appeared on the gridiron Pennsylvania won the toss and chose the west goal with a strong wind at their backs After Cornell kicked off the Quakers were unable to gain and were forced to kick The ball went almost to Cornells goal and from this point the Ithaca boys carried it right down to within Pennsylvanias 15 yard line only to lose It on an attempted delayed pass Pennsylvania kicked the ball out of danger and thereafter during the half the Quakers kicked almost every time they secured the ball The half ended with the ball In Cornells possession on her 25 yard line In the second half Cornell scored soon after play started and Player Who Advanced the Ball for Virginia Fifteen Thousand People See the Carolinians Win the Gridiron Championship of the South Ab emathy the Star for North Carolina Special to The Washington Poet Norfolk Va Nov 30 By a score of 17 to 0 Carolina demonstrated her football supremacy over Virginia here this afternoon and the pessimistic prediction of King Cole Virginias coach that the Carolinians had a stronger team was fully proven Fighting gamely but hopelessly against the assault the strength and weight of the White and Blue Virginia went down defeat In the presence of 15000 Virginians and Carolinians Not once during the contest was Carolinas goal in danger and only once waa the team neld for downs The victory of the Blue and White team stunned the Virginians and thj forwards and backs of Carolina were at all times In good form and their power and resource were always in evidence during the contest Steadily as the game wore on the Carolinians gained In power and more and more Irresistible became their attacks Koberson Handled Team Well Like a veteran did Roberson handle the Carolina contingent He struck the Virginia line from end to end and pierced It at will At Virginias center the fight was thick at all times and here Carolina made her longest gains While Abernathy was the star of the White and Blue aggregation from Carolina Story and Snipes did wonderful ground gaining and Townsend and Brown were strong at the ends For Virginia Johnston waa the only player that could advance the ball at all and he bore the brunt of the battle for the Orange and Blue Crawfords punting was excellent but ho was handicapped by a lame shoulder Barry waa also a star for Virginia beliig swift in getting down the field and sure In blocking tackles He was badly hurt near the end of the game and was replaced by Dodson and Maddux replaced Crawford who was put out of the game for slugging Two Touchdowns in First Half Carolina made two touchdowns in the first half although they seemed stronger In the second half Fumbling and oft side plays of which both teams were offenders had a conspicuous part in framing the result At one time In the second half Virginia rallied and developed Just a bit of her old time form and the student rooters were hopeful but their hopes were soon shattered by a mlsplay The only feature of the game was the absence of spectacular plays and the predominance of the machine like playing of Carolina which seemed to grind away the energy of their opponents METHODIST TEAM WINS GOLF AT CHEVY CHASE Dr Gray and Moven Thompson the Prize at the regular weekly meeting of the Eureka Athletic and Social Club at Germanla Maennerchor Hall jack Johnson the acknowledged peer of all the colored heavyweights and conceded to be among the best of the big men of the ring has agreed to stop Young Peter Jackson in twelve rounds or be content with the small end of the boxers share of the receipts The magnitude of the proposition undertaken by Johnson becomes evident at a glance when It Is stated that he will attempt to do something In rather short time which has never been accomplished In bouts of much longer duration Jackson has still to be sent to dreamland by a punch de Ilvered while In a boxing contest and he Is mighty firm In his conviction that the package will not be delivered to htm tomorrow Jackson Is of the perfect type of defense boxer and as his opponent has agreed to do the stopping this quality should be the all Important factor How efer It should not be thought that Pete intends to simply stana ana protect himself but he says he will carry the war Into Africa Jackson has a pe culiar method of covering whlch when he seeks to bring it into use makes him practically unhitable Fifteen Rounds to a Draw Cincinnati
