Interim Athletic Director Raymond Smoot said Saturday night that Allen had emerged unscathed in an internal investigation of Hokie basketball that uncovered 13 NCAA violations. The probe led to Moir's resignation and a buyout by Virginia Tech of the last two years of his contract. Smoot said Moir's resignation Friday forced him to make a quick decision between two assistant coaches, Allen and Bobby Stevens.

"I think that the reasonable choice would be to go with the one that has been there the longest," Smoot said. Allen got the nod because he has been with Virginia Tech 11 years, compared with five years for Stevens, Smoot said by telephone. Both assistant coaches had said they would accept the job if it were SS, 112.461. 26. Larry Pollard.

locker room at the half. The Indians continued to pressure the Hornets with a man-to-man defense and Wilson forced Fort to work for the bucket with a tight zone defense. The Lady Indians held the Hornets at bay during the third quarter as they marched into the final canto with a 39-24 lead. Wilson pulled within 11, 46-35, midway through the closing quarter on Baldwin's fourth three-pointer of the outing. The teams played out a 14-14 standoff during the stanza.

The Indians scored only twice from the field and made 11 trips to the charity line for 10 points. Adams scored Wilson's only other field goal while the Hornets made the trip to the foul line six times for nine points. Fort won the battle of the boards, grabbing 38 to Wilson's 21. Catherine Harlow was top rebounder with 12. Baldwin led all scorers with 22 points.

Betsy Craig popped in 15 markers to lead Fort's offensive effort. Fort's jayvees took a 45-26 win over the Wilson junior varsity. Fort's Angie Sawyers took top scoring honors with 16 and Stephanie Wine was high for Wilson with 11. IJMlJTVMVkWM I jTWlTTJiiTTJr By JO DONVOAN Sports Writer FORT DEFIANCE The Lady Indians of Fort Defiance rolled to their 11th straight victory with a 53-38 decision over non-district opponent Wilson Saturday night.

The Hornets never threatened the Indians after the hosts posted an 18-8 first frame margin. Fort was hot-handed as it hit 20-47 shots from the field for a 47 percent shooting mark while Wilson was plagued with poor shooting from the field. The Hornets hit only 12-51 for a 24 percent effort. The Fort offense put up an 8-0 score before Wilson managed one from the foul line. Betsy Craig scored on a 16-foot baseline shot to continue Fort's charge and Jennifer Baldwin drove the baseline at the other end to chalk up Wilson's first field goal of the evening.

Baldwin bottomed out a three-pointer and Susan Adams hit from low to round out Wilson's first quarter scoring, while the Tribe marked up eight more points to coast to its 18-8 opening stanza spread. Wilson's defense cooled Fort's offensive effort during the second quarter but the Indians still managed a 13-10 effort against the Hornets. Baldwin opened and closed the frame with three-pointers for Wilson to account for six of the Hornets markers. Lorraine Blackburn hit back-to-back buckets during the canto to keep Wilson within striking distance, 31-18, going into the Strike (Continued from page Bl) account several mail bags that remained unsorted. The team had sold 62,000 tickets for the game between the regular players.

Two clubs Buffalo and Denver reportedly have given away tickets in an effort to boost attendance. But Dave Senko, director of media relations for the Bills, denied the allegation. Senko said the Bills previously had sold more than 39,000 tickets to Sunday's contest and have seen nearly 22,000 returned. And he noted that a postal strike in Canada could increase that figure. Getting it right Petie Coffey was the winner of Eastside's Budweiser 100 last Saturday, not Buzzy Walters as reported in Friday's edition of the Daily News Leader.

(AP) Kyle Petty led an unusually busy second-day qualifying session Saturday for the Holly Farms 400 NASCAR stock car race. Petty, driving a Ford Thunder-bird, turned a fast lap of 114.103 mph to take the 11th starting spot in Sunday's 31-car lineup. The third generation NASCAR driver grandson of Lee Petty and son of Richard Petty improved considerably from the 113.213 he turned in Friday when the top 10 positions were locked in.

His first-day lap was 15th fastest and Saturday's fast lap would have been good for eighth place. "We qualified yesterday (Friday) a lot lower than we wanted," said Petty. "Today (Saturday), we just wanted to get up as far as 11th or 12th, and we did that. We're more comfortable with our starting position now." Bill Elliott, who set a race record of 115.1 on Friday, and Darrell Waltrip, at 115.001, will start from the front row in Sunday's 400-lap, 250-mile event on the five-eighths-mile oval. Forty-four drivers made qualifying attempts during the two days of time trials, with 26 of them making runs on Saturday at North Wilkesboro Speedway.
