He was born Jan. 6, 1932, in NeA York City, a son of Vito and Rosa7( (Labetta) Tedesco. He was a member of St. Johns' Catholic Church and was an V.SZ Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Lindau, Marie Tedesco; a son, Andrew Joseph Tedesco of Staunton; and daughter, Selene Jean Henshaw ofr Waynesboro.

Betty R. Thompson LYNDHURST Betty Ray Thompson, 64, of Lyndhurst, died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2, 1994) in Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born Tuesday, April 29, 1930 in Waynesboro, daughter of Herman and Eunice (Harris) Muth-erspaw. She was a member of Lyndhurst United Methodist Church, choir, and 39 and Holding Club.

She is survived by her husband, Nelson N. Thompson; a son, Clyde Nelson "Butch" Thompson of Waynesboro; three daughters, Martha Virginia Thompson of McGaheys-ville, Carolyn Ann Loving of Waynesboro and Deborah Ray Miller of Hermitage; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Lyndhurst United Methodist Church by the Revs. Jim Simmons and Vance Brydge, with burial in Augusta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Robertson, George Shaffer, Jerry Floyd, David Barker, Roger Flesher, Richard Ellinger, Dale Plummer and E.J. Hewitt. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in the Waynesboro Chapel of Etter Funeral Home. Calvin D. Lucas Sr. HOMESTEAD, Fla. Calvin Douglas Lucas 67, of 360 N.E. 12th Homestead, died Thursday (Sept.

29, 1994) at the SMH Homestead Hospital. He was born in Swoope Feb. 15, 1927, son of Henry Lucas and Elsie (Wolf) Lucas. He was a retired Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors inlclude his wife, Gertrude (Mays) Lucas of Homestead; a son, Calvin D. Lucas Jr. of Homestead; two sisters, Frances Cason of McKinley, and Audrey Reed of Glen Burnie, two brothers, James of thologist and deputy medical examiner for Nassau County, N.Y. He became a U.S. citizen on May 16, 1965 and was a member of the Peruvian-American Medical Society of New York, a Fellow Associate College of Pathology and the American Medical Association of Nassau County.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet E. Stinnett of Hot Springs, and Dr. Elizabeth P. Elguera of Houston, Texas; one son, Manuel Edward Elguera of Massapequa Park, N.Y.; one brother, Javier Elguera of Lima, Peru; three sisters, Nellie Valtuone and Rosa Elguera, both of Lima, Peru, and Elvira McSwain of Los Angeles, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 2 p.m.

Wednesday at Lifeline Ministries by the Rev. Frankie Neff, with burial in Union Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Hot Springs. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Harry B.

Gayhart VERONA Harry B. Gayhart, 70, of 305 Augusta Verona, died 6:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 3, 1994). Arrangements are being handled by Henry Funeral Home.

Samuel B. Whitfield STAUNTON The Rev. Samuel Bradshaw Whitfield, 69, of 307 Old Greenville Road, died at 1:54 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 2, 1994) at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 31, 1924, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Hutson B. and Mamie B. (Bradshaw) Whitfield. He was pastor of the Westside Baptist Church for many years and before retirement was employed by the former Stanley Furniture Company for 10 years.

He was a member of the Society of Whitfields in Mt. Holly, N.C. Survivors include his wife, Nellie (Byers) Whitfield; three sons, George Robert of Seoul, Korea, John Edward of Staunton and Paul David Whitfield of Manassas; a daughter, Carolyn (Whitfield) Dull of Staunton; a step-son, Richard Douglas Lotts of Hampton; a brother, Hutson B. Whitfield of Suffolk; and five grandchildren. A service will be held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jack B. Wilkers, with burial in Augusta Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be John A. Morris, Douglas T.

Patterson, Danny D. Sandy, Robert Smith, Basil Guffey and Clyde A. Wade. The family will receive" friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Ernest F.

Kubler HARRISONBURG Ernest Frederick Kubler, 94, died Monday (Oct. 3, 1994) at Sunnyside Medical Center, Harrisonburg. Arrangements are being handled by McDow Funeral Home. Gertrude H. Austin VESUVIUS Gertrude Haire Austin, 68, of Vesuvius, died Monday (Oct.

3, 1994) at her home. She was born July 1, 1926 in Bain-bridge, a daughter of Barney M. and Betty (Cook) Haire. She was a member of Vesuvius Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar W.

Austin. Survivors include her son, Donald Gray Austin of Vesuvius; two brothers, Henry and Edward Haire, both of Bainbridge, three sisters, Christine Powell and Mildred Haire, both of Bainbridge, Ga. and Betty Jo Groah of Staunton. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Mt.

Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery by the Rev. Dan Stanley. The family will receive friends at the residence at anytime. Memorials may be made to the Fairfield First Aid Crew. Arrangements are being handled by Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.

Cynthia J. Coffman Cynthia Jean Coffman of Alexandria, died Friday, Sept. 30, 1994 in Fenwick Island, Delaware after being hit by an automobile. She was born February 15, 1947 in King's Daughters' Hospital, Staunton. Miss Coffman attended St.

Petersburg Junior College, St. Petersburg, Florida College in Tampa, Fla. and Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She was employed for 15 years with British Air Space at Dulles Airport. Surviving are her parents, James C.

and Jean Markley Coffman of Alexandria; 3 aunts, Betty Drinkard of Charlottesville, Nancy Pascal of Staunton, and Eula Irvine of Waynesboro; and 1 uncle, Meredith C. Coffman of Alexandria. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, in Thornrose Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Hugh T.

Harris. Hamrick Funeral Home is handling arrangements. PdOb Warren M. Johnson WAYNESBORO Warren M. Johnson, 84, of 406 Port Republic Road, died Sunday morning (Oct.

2, 1994). He was born Sept. 29, 1910 in Augusta County, a son of Ernest M. Cornelia (Reeves) Johnson. He retired from the DuPont Co.

in 1974 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Pleasants View United Methodist Church, served as a trustee, former chairman of the trustee board, and served on other church auxiliaries. He was a member of the American Legion VSW, Waynesboro Zoning Commission, a former coach for the Little League baseball and football teams, and many other civic activities. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Anna-belle Miller Johnson, of the residence; three sons, Jeffrey of Hershey, and Wendell Johnson of Waynesboro, and Maurice Miller of Harrisonburg; three daughters, Mary Naylor and Sharon Fuller, both of New Haven, and Vivian Miller of Hermitage; a sister, Madelyn Massie of Hampstead, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Pleasantview United Methodist Church by Dr. Isaac Paul-Coker, assisted by the minesterial alliance, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Waynesboro. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Pallbearers wil be friends attending the service.

Public viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at McCutch-eon's Funeral Home in Waynesboro. The family will receive friends at the residence at any time. Anna C.

Zurita STAUNTON Anna Compton (Currin) Zurita of Briarwood Apartments, C-5, died Sunday (Oct. 2, 1994) in Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth. Funeral services are tentatively set for Thursday. Hamrick Funeral Home is han- Police reports Failing to yield STAUNTON A truck driver was charged with failing to yield the right-of-way after his tractor-trailer struck a car at 6:45 a.m. Sunday on U.S.

250 at the 1-81 south exit, according to Virginia State Police. The truck driver, Johnny W. Hen-sley, 38, of N.C., pulled across U.S. 250, striking a 1991 Jaguar driven by Guy C. Eavers, 53, of Staunton, police said.

Police estimated the damage to the Jaguar at $8,000, while the 1993 Kenworth Tractor had damages of $900, the report stated.Injured in the wreck, Eavers was treated at Augusta Medical Center and released, a hospital official said. Reckless driving MINT SPRING Monica L. Bryant, 28, of Charlottesville, was charged with reckless driving after a single-vehicle wreck at 3:25 a.m. Sunday on Va. 654, west of Va.

652, according to Virginia State Police. Ms. Bryant was traveling on Va. 654 at 85 mph according to the police report, and lost control in the curve, police said. Her 1994 Toyota Tercel struck the guard rail and concrete bridge, causing $2,500 damage to her car, the report stated.

Mrs. Beulah S. Allen Mrs. Beulah (Surratt) Tunstall Allen, 74, of Blue Ridge Drive, Staunton, died at 4:45 p.m. Sunday (October 2, 1994) in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charolttesville, following a long illness.

She was born on June 16, 1920, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Arnold Pierce and Claudia May (Bolt) Surratt. In 1939 she graduated from Beverley Manor High School. During World War II she moved to Norfolk and was employed by the telephone company. She married Sylvanus Vernon Tunstall of Norfolk in 1944, and he preceded her in death in 1958. In 1960 she married Albert Cecil Allen.

Following retirement, they moved from Virginia Beach to Dublin. Mrs. Allen retired to her adopted hometown of Staunton following Mr. Allen's death in 1989. She was a member of the Staunton Church of the Brethren and was also active in the Staunton Welcome Wagon and AARP.

As Mrs. Allen often said, "It's not how you die, but it's how you live. I've had a good life." Survivors include a son Sylvanus (Van) Vernon Tunstall III of Aptos, CA; two sisters, Ms. Phyllis Houlihan of Mt. Sidney and Ms.

Edith Michael of Staunton; a number of nieces and nephews; and numerous friends, including Louis L. Garber. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Estel Surratt, Virgil Surratt, Lester Surratt, and Chester Surratt; and a sister, Ms. Beatrice S. Crock.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Staunton Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Jerry W. Ruff. Entombment will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Van Tunstall, Dennis Houlihan, Cary Bowman, David Surratt, Al Winters, and Louis L. Garber. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Henry Funeral Home. It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial donations to the Staunton Church of the Brethren Renovation Fund, 1615 N.

Manuel P. Elguera, 68, of 189 South-gate Crescent, Massapequa Park, N.Y., died Friday (Sept. 30. 1994) at Long Island Jewish Hospital, Lake Success, N.Y. He was born May 23, 1926 in La Oroya, Peru, a son of Manuel and Enriqueta (Piana) Elguera.

Waynesboro, VA 22980 Boyd R. Campfield Boyd Richmond "Buddy" Camp-field, 73, of 113 Rose Hill Circle, died Monday morning at Augusta Medical Center. He was born December 22, 1920 at Winchester, a son of the late William Sanford and Millie Brakke Campfield. He was a graduate of Dunsmore Business College and attended the University of Virginia. He served in the Army Air Force in the China, Burma, India Theater during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with cluster.

He was a printer and operated Campfield Printing Co. over 40 years and later was associated with Sch-mids Printery and Callison and Co. in real estate sales. Mr. Campfield was a member and Deacon Emeritus of First Baptist Church.

He was a member of Staunton Lions Club since 1956 and a past president. He was a board member of the Salvation Army, Commissioner with Staunton Redevelopment Housing Authority, and served on the Exective Board of Valley Mental Health Center. He was Neighborhood Commissioner of Boy Scouts of America and leader of Boy Scout Troop 100. Since retirement he was a volunteer with Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, King's Daughters' Hospital and Red Cross Blood Mobile. Surviving are his wife, Jeane Collins Campfield, whom he married on June 6, 1945; 2 sons, Samuel Lee Campfield, Staunton and Michael Collins Campfield, Springfield, daughter and son-in-law Jane and Michael Nessar, Staunton; brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Ann Johnson Campfield, Lynchburg, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Brakke Crosby, Staunton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William B. Campfield and by a sister, Virginia C. Hay. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.

Richard Moyers. Burial will be in Thorn-rose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Walter H. Collins, Ashby E. Campbell, Neil P.

Critz, W. Russell Wilkerson, H. Lair Stewart, William G. Lucas, H. Douglas Johnston, James C.
