Bellevue avenue and the Cliffs nor Reginald Vanderbilt has yetfcound opportunity to show attentions to the count When Mis Gladys Vanderbilt becomes the Countess Ladlslaus Szechenyi next month the family of that nobleman will have achieved another of the fortunate marriages for which it Is as famous as for its antiquity and its caste Since 1697 the Szechenyis have been titled aristocrats In Hungary Hardly a line of the nobility In the realm either antedates them or has won more favors from the throne The ancestors of the present head of the house were nearly all dignitaries statesmen renowned soldiers or trusted diplomats The count himself is a member of the Hungarian House of Lords Yet despite its prominence the family has attained so little wealth that the Hungarian papers naively admit tilt the Vanderbilt acquisition will not prove unwieldy For half a century however the Szechenyi lords have been notable for their discretion In matrimonial affairs Some married wealth a few galrlpd higher position through their wives At the present time no less than three oth ers are about to become most fortunate brides or bridegrooms The count cousin Princess Marlzza Is engaged to Prince Ludwlg Windischgratz of the royal Hungarian family Another cousin Julius will soon wed Baroness Haastechlen one ot the greatest eliglbles of Austria and it Is said that another I member of the family is to enter the court of Germany through marriage Some surprise is still expressed that the count should have gone to America for his wife for the Hungarian aristocracy has heretofore most steadfastly scorned plutocratic wealth and deemed money worthless to procure position in society Yet the Budapest Journals explain that Miss Vanderbllta father waa a most respectable grocer whose family has moved In the most exclusive American circles so that the prospective step down Is therefore not so great as might at first be surmised Moreover the social power of the Szechenyis in Hungary is so extraordinary and ramifications so great that it is generally believed the American bride will be honorably received even though her ancestors were engaged in trade A fairy godmother has asked me to Spend the coming winter in New York and Washington said an attractive maid out of the Middle West who is East on a shopping tour and I have been fitted out In six up to date frocks I was amazed
