The Advocate, Newark, 0., Tues. Sept. IS, 1987 Page 3 Oh io briefs Honda to reveal 'big' plan COLUMBUS (AP) State officials say Honda of North America will make a major announcement on Thursday that will be good for Ohio. But Cathy Ferrari, communications officer in the Department of Development, said Monday that she could not give further details. "It's a big one," she said of the announcement that Gov.

Richard Celeste will join Honda in making at a news conference. "All I can say is that it's good news." Ms. Ferrari would not confirm or rule out reports that the announcement has something to do with speculation in a national magazine earlier this year that Ohio may be the site of Honda's second U.S. automobile plant. The Japanese company operates an auto plant near Marsyville, about 25 miles northwest of Columbus and adjacent to a motorcycle plant that marked Honda's first venture into the U.S.

automotive industry nearly 10 years ago. The trade journal Automotive News in August reported that Honda would decide by the end of 1987 whether to begin construction of a second assembly plant in Ohio, at a cost of about $500 million, to make make Acura luxury cars. Honda, the first Japanese automaker to build cars in the United States, employs 4,377 people at auto, motorcycle and engine plants in Ohio, representing a total capital investment of $720 million. The new construction would boost Honda's investment in Ohio to $1.2 billion. Besides its opeations in Marysville, Honda has an engine assembly plant near Anna in western Ohio.

It also has an assembly plant in Alliston, Ontario. On Jan. 8, 1987, Honda announced expansion of the engine plant. Honda said the expansion is expected to create 800 jobs at full production, bringing total employment at the Anna plant to about 1,000. Honda began manufacturing motorcycles in the United States in September 1979.

The motorcycle plant now employs about 320. Planes nearly collide over Dayton DAYTON (AP) The pilot of a small plane says he never saw the Delta Ait-Lines DC-8 jet that passed within a few hundred feet of his plane until it overtook him. Passengers on both planes were alarmed Sunday as the pilots turned sharply to get away from each other. No one was injured. The pilot of the small plane, Steven Stewart, filed a near-miss report with the Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards' Office in Detroit on Monday and said he expected to meet with FAA personnel to review tapes of the radio conversations to determine what happened.

Stewart, who operates Waynesville Sky Sports, said he was taking nine parachutists up in his twin-engine Beechcraft D-18. He said he was talking to the Indianapolis Air Route Control Center, which gave him no indication of any other planes near him northeast of Cincinnati. Police seek clues in clerk's slaying NEW RICHMOND (AP) Two investigators from the Clermont County Sheriff's Department are joining Pierce Township police in hunting clues to the weekend shooting death of a clerk at a township convenience store. No arrests have been made in the shooting of Amy M. Diesman, 19, at a convenience store.

Her body was found by a customer early Saturday. "We really don't have any suspects," said township police Lt. Tom Hemsath. "We have been working around the clock, but no arrests have been made." Ms. Diesman, a mother and college student, was working her fourth night on that job.

She had graduated in 1986 from New Richmond High School, where she was a National Honor Society member and an athlete. Two sisters embezzle $425,000 COLUMBUS (AP) Two sisters have been sentenced to 3M years each in prison after admitting they embezzled $425,000 and spent most of the money on luxuries. Mary Katherine Lyons, 29, of Hilliard, and Denise Hay, 30, of Plain City, each pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of theft and four counts of forgery in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Most of the $425,915 was taken from Nationwide Insurance where Ms. Lyons works.

Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Daniel Abraham said most of the money has been spent and cannot be recovered. Abraham said Ms. Lyons used Nationwide's computer system to issue checks Mrs. Hay cashed. They split the proceeds, telling family members they inherited the money or won it gambling.

Ms. Lyons was fired Feb. 5 after the thefts were discovered. Panda loan possible in Toledo TOLEDO (AP) If two giant pandas are loaned to the Toledo Zoo it could have a positive rippling affect on the entire city, officials say. Robbie Lyle, an international trade consultant who has been instrumental in trying to arrrange the panda loan, said the Chinese would send trade delegations here.

In all likelihood, the delegations would try to develop contacts with the Port of Toledo and its enterprise and trade-free zones, and with the area's auto supply network. Meanwhile, Lyle said several Chinese officials will visit the Toledo Zoo over the next few months to see what kind of accommodations their giant pandas can expect during their three-month stay here next summer. No executions have been scheduled because all have appeals pending.

One woman also is being held under death sentence in Marysville. It may be another year before any appeal is decided. Jack Bendolph, assistant superintendent of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility at Lucasville, indicates no immediate concern, but said Monday he doesn't know what will happen when the capacity is reached. "We'll tackle that when the time comes," he said. However, he said the policy of isolating the prisoners will be maintained.

He mentioned the possibility of designating other areas of the prison for death-row inmates, despite an overall population of 2,400, nearly 800 over Lucasville's intended capacity. Double-celling of prisoners is already done at the prison, except for what Bendolph termed predatory inmates, those considered violent or likely to have disruptive or other undesirable influence on others. David Stebbins, chief death penalty counsel for the Ohio Public Defender's Office, said only two appeals of Ohio death row inmates are anywhere near the federal court stage. mwMmmmmmmsi IN CONFERENCE. "It doesn't hurt to take a little kicking in the scrimmage as long as you do well in the ballgame," Bush said. Bush and his wife, Barbara, arrived in Cincinnati Monday evening, attended a private fund-raiser for his presidential campaign, and flew back to Washington, D.C. The fund-raiser was held at the suburban Indian Hill home of S. Craig Lindner, son of prominent Cincinnati financier Carl Lindner Jr. At least 250 people paid $1,000 apiece to meet the vice president and his wife.

Although he has not formally declared his intention to be a 1988 CINCINNATI (AP) Vice President George Bush says he's not concerned by television evangelist Pat Robertson's strong showing in a weekend Iowa straw poll. Bush, in Cincinnati for a private fund-raiser Monday night, said it was surprising for Robertson to outpoll both Bush and Senate Majority Leader Robert Doll in the Iowa poll. However, Bush noted the poll was held far in advance of the 1988 presidential caucuses and primaries. Bush, considered a leading candidate for the Republican nomination, is expected to launch his campaign officially next month. "He (Robertson) showed a lot of strong organization," Bush said.
