Every available blossom in the state will most likely be found on one of the 61 floats that will highlight the 92nd annual Tournament of Roses Parade. It's impossible to give an accurate count, of course, but 'those in the know' estimate that about 20 million fresh flowers will be used. And that's a lot of posies! Then, the day after the parade, flower growers begin all over again.

It's big business, too. and these growers are well aware that anything can happen to wipe out their investments light freezing in early spring, extended dry spells in summer, unusual hot weather in December or a heavy rainfall. One grower sadly recalls the year a Hawaiian volcano erupted, ruining a field of orchids just days before the parade. Television star and conserva the 1897 parade were members of the Grand Army of the Republic who had fought in the Civil War. The following year, because of the war with Spain, President William McKinley was consulted about even holding the event, and he promptly gave his blessing.

Then, in 1899, rain fell for the first time on parade day, making the streets a sea of mud. One entry, a six-in-hand, paraded unoccupied the ladies who were to have ridden in it flatly refused to brave the Float decoration begins about 48 hours prior to the parade. The hardier blossoms, such as chrysanthemums, are applied first, and more delicate flowers just before parade time. In fact, huge shipments of van-da orchids, gingers and heliconias are flown in literally hours before the parade begins. ly-rvUi tionist Lome Greene is this year's Grand Marshal, and CBS and NBC will have cameras posted along the 5.5-mile parade route.

Michael Landon and Kelly Lange are returning as NBC's hosts, with Bob Barker, Phyllis George, John Schneider and Loretta Swit helming CBS's coverage. The Rose Parade dates back to 1889, when members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club decided to decorate their buggies with flowers and drive in formation to a park. For the first few years, these parades were followed by a picnic lunch and an afternoon of games. As news of the fresh-flower parade spread, the New Year's Day event' became too big for the club to handle, so the Tournament of Roses Association was formed. In 1896, a public subscription raised $595 to underwrite parade expenses.

A 'standout' in "CBS' Happy New Year, America" will come your way from three times zones across the U.S., with music ranging from pop to ballroom to country. Multi-talented Paul Anka anchors the special from the Grand Ballroom of the Las Vegas Hilton, and he'll be joined by orchestra leader Les Brown and his Band of Renown.
