Christian welcomes back Bob Carlisle (6-3) and Dan Cramer (6-2), both of whom missed last season because of football injuries. The Blue Aces also nave letter winners Chris Rucker and Chris Johnston. Licking Heights coach Bill Schneider has the smallest, but probably the quickest team in the LCL.

Horton will have to be contained by the opposing defenses. Catholic boss Phil Joseph may have the league's tallest for the title. Lakewood coach Don Thorp will be counting on veteran Jeff Henderson (6-2), and juniors John Shade (6-4), and Robin Watson (6-1) to guide the Lancer fortunes. Lakewood won last year's LCL reserve league with a 17-1 mark.

Watkins Memorial and Northridge are expected to be much improved and in contention for the title. Besides Bundy, coach Richard Harrop of Watkins will depend on veterans Keith Sager, Mike Perry, and Jim White. And despite the loss of Foshee, Northridge boss Don Sullivan is counting on let-terman Jon Vaia, Roger News-ome, Roger McConnell, Pat Hickman, and Roger Schmidt to lead the Vikings to their giants in Licking Valley's Dave Burda (6-9), and Northridge's Tim Foshee (6-6). Then there were such prolific point poppers as Newark Catholic's Dino Guanciale, Licking Valley's Barry Wright and Duane wood, Granville's Steve Woodring and Tom Lay, Licking Heights' Mike Bullock, Lakewood's Lonnie Watson and Todd Yoho, Utica's Scott Walters, and Matt Beal of Watkins Memorial. But the challenge of putting the new faces in the right places by the coaches will make this year's title chase plenty interesting.

Heath, Newark Catholic, and Lakewood are the favorites as predicted by the coaches during the preseason. Baldwin-Wallace and Wittenberg, who share the 1978 Ohio Conference football title, are joint owners of a couple of the league's post-season honors in selections made by the conference's coaches. Roger Andrachik, the Yellow Jackets' bruising fullback, and Dave Merritt, the Tigers' bowl, were voted co-coaches of the year Tackle Paul Petrella, also of Baldwin-Wallace, was chosen as the recipient of the Hank Critchfield Award as the best defensive lineman, with Marietta linebacker Steve James earning the Critchfield Award as the top defensive back.

Sampson was the Ohio Conference leader in total offense during the 1978 season, and set a new Denison school record in that category. On the All-OC Red Division defensive unit are Denison tri-captain Perry Horner, a 5-8, 170 senior and Big Red linebacker Mike LeMaster, a 6-0, 190 junior. This was the second consecutive year that Horner has garnered All-Conference honors.

Perry played at a defensive back position in 1978 after holding down the middle guard spot in 1977. Bunay (h.zi. Newark Catholic and Licking Valley are the defending co-champions. Both earned a share of the title with identical 14-4 records. Lakewood and Johnstown came close to the top matching 13-5 marks, then came Granville 10-8, Heath 9-9, Watkins Memorial 7-11, Northridge 6-12, and Utica and Licking Heights both at 2-16.

The LCL's graduation loss included such three-year all-stars as Johnstown's Jeff Kessler, Lakewood's Jay Davisson, Licking Valley's Doug Lake, and Granville's Joe Dennison. The Western Michigan tailback, with 4,190 rushing yards in his three years, won unanimous approval as a first team all-conference selection for the second straight season from the coaches Tuesday. Persell, a 5-foot-9, 181-pound senior from Detroit, was joined by defensive end Greg Sullivan of Miami and Kent State linebacker Jack Lazor as the only players to make the first team for the third year in a row.
