Priced at only 397 Portable Color UC22 I Moody New view of old Granville In the Granville Times of July 27, 1905, Lorinda Munson Bryant says: "My grandfather, General Augustine Munson, was the youngest of twelve children. He came to Granville, Ohio, from Granville, with his father's family in 1805. For several years my great grandfather, Major Jesse Munson, and his family lived in a log house which stood on Centerville Street some distance back of the present frame house. The latter was finished ready to be occupied in 1812 or nearly that date, and was the first frame house in Licking County." We all know the house to which she refers.

Until recently part of the Bryn Du estate, it is the last house on the left side of the Newark road (formerly Centerville Street), coming from Granville, before reaching Cherry Valley Road. According to Rev. Henry Bushnell in his History of Granville, Jesse Munson, a man then advanced in years and only a member of the Granville Colony because he didn't want to be left behind when his children were all moving westward, on arriving at the site abovementioned, where two or three cabins already were standing, and upon tasting a handful of the rich bottomland, Jesse Munson declared he should have that land, and at the vendue December 10, 1805, paid for it $3043.80 for 1500 acres. I decline to argue Mrs. Bryant's statement that the house he build there was the first frame house in Licking County.

All I know is that she was history-minded. She and her family loved Granville, and bequests from the various generations of Bryants contributed largely to features and institutions of Granville that present generations of the community's residents enjoy. We think of Granville as a muddy wilderness of tree-stumps and humble cabins. Not entirely so, according to Mrs. Bryant: "During those early years life was anything but prosaic among these early pioneers.

The town boasted of its ballroom equally with its churches, and the youngpeople had their ballgowns and slippers, their velvet knee-breeches and pumps, as well as their sober-hued frocks and poke bonnets, their plain small-clothes and three-cornered hats. "There was to be a grand ball in Granville and every girlish heart was in a flutter over the coming event. Miss Ada Munson, my most beautiful great-aunt, never looked lovelier than she did that night as she stood ready for her expected escort No wonder that the rather stern father looked admiringly over the top of his book at this exquisite being, some say his favorite "The young man has come. Ada has been helped to the horse block, ready to take her place on the pillion behind her almost-accepted lover, but to her consternation the horse gives a bound and away goes horse and rider. A scornful laugh comes back to her from the triumphant lover What does this mean? Why was Ada spurned? But Jesse Munson's daughter shall not miss the ball.

He issues commands thick and fast "Bring my velvet knee-breeches, my silver knee buckles, my yellow satin vest, my bottle-green coat, and tie a fresh ribbon on my And to the manservant, "Bring out the big bay mare, put the saddle and pillion on her and stand at the horse block until I come out with Miss At the ball, father and daughter created a fine sensation. Ada's dance card was filled in no time. No lover could have been more devoted than was Major Munson to the beautiful Ada. The suitor who had spurned her was spurned in turn though he tried his best to approach her and apoligize. (Mrs.

Bryant says she spares the name of the humiliated one, "as everybody is related to everybody else in Pintler's been wrong 41 years MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -The U.S. Forest Service has decided to correct a 41-year-old spelling error, but it will take more than a stroke of a pen to fix this bungle. When the Forest Service created the Anaconda-Pintlar Primitive Area in 1937, Pintlar was misspelled. Now, Mrs.

Paul McLucas of Newman Lake, the grandauehter of Charles Ellsworth Pintler, for whom the area was named, has convinced the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to correct the spelling from Pintlar to Pintler. But solving the problem won't be easy. To rectify its error, the Forest Service says it will have to fix not only maps but also road and directional signs leading to the Pintler Area, west of Butte, Mont.
