find the personal descriptions alike The German giving his namo as von Elbe asks Hardy to exchange passports On Hardys refusal the German takes the document at the pistols point CHAPTER III Extraordinary Proceedings Wherein art interesting question of precedence is settled It was an hour before I spoke again My companion sat quietly In his corner of jhe compartment revolver and eyes focused on my person Whenever I made a movement he promptly leveled his weapon at my head and kept it in that annoying position until I became motionless again To me the proceedings were at once humiliating and monotonous At times I relapsed Into a hypnotic Inspection of the revolver muzzle always confronting me al though his firm hand rested easily on ou have lost your passport which will certainly Is yours by right Ill fight you In a week when and where and with whatever you please conforming of course to established procedure Now will you give me your parole 7 No I said shortly Why Because you do not trust me Why should I You rob me and then ask me to trust you Go to the devil Very well he said with tlehtenel lips I shall have the greater pleasure In offering you satisfaction a week from today The tribute will be as unwelcome as unexpected I said I dont fight auela with bandits That will do he Interrupted in a harth vole You can afford to risk it if I can He glanced out of the window I made the faintest motion toward my hip then desisted I have one thing to say to you before we reach Luxembourg he said tossing his passport onto the cushion at my side It Is this dont use that passport of mine You need not show it I give it to you to be rid of It In case of detention I cant afford to have that passport found in my possession I dont want it I said but he Ignored my observation and continued When we reach the station and well be there shortly contrary to custom the gendarmes may ask for your passport Dont show them mine Say simply that CoL George Colton who Is In charge of the collection and Impounding of customs in Santo Domingo visited the State Department to day while en route to Magnolia Mass where he will spend a brief vacation In this country Despite the fact that Che Dominican 1 customs produced greater revenues last ear than ever before averaging more than J00WO per month the comparative collections thus far this year are about one third more Col Colton would not discuss the question of what disposition will be made of the portion of receipts on deposit in New York saving that matter did not comet within Ms Jurisdiction Any business concerning the disposition of this money said Col Colton will be conducted by Senor Velasquez the Dominican minister of commerce aria finance who Is now In this country Jiminra Hunting Trouble Col Colton did not regard seriously the reports of a new Insurrection In Santo Domingo He said the revolutionary spirit Is rampant about Monte Cristl and that Jlmlnez probably would make trouble If he could as when he started for New York recently it was said that he came for the purpose of getting money to finance a new revolution American capital is becoming optimistic concerning anv danger from revolutions said Col Colton He told of a number of persons who have gone to the island recently and have taken land for the cultivation of cocoa The killing of the American Thurston an employe of the Dominican government in the collection of revenues and his Porto Rican companion is greatly to be deplored Col Colton stated as both of these men were particularly efflclenL Assisted by native guards they had captured eight loads of stuff from smugglers and at night stored this In a vacant house MKssmtt THE BUSY CORNEa 0 How Americans Died In describing the attack which resulted In the death of the two men Col Coltoij explained that they made the mistake of sleeping In the house with the guards The smugglers made a night attack firing a volley into the building and as Thurston and his companion occupied hammocks they caught the entire volley while the native guards who slept on the ground escaped Capt Southerland who Is In command of the naval forces patrolling Santo Domingo waters reports from time to time to the Navy Department One has recently been received which gives information of various lawless bands that arc moving about the island confirming the report which Ool Colton makes Capt Southerland has been Informed of a small Insurrectionary movement alon the Haitian border and that a hundred or more Santo Domingo people have gone across into Haiti to escape the government forces As GOOD LIFE SAVERS SCARCE Government Service Crippled for Lack of Men and Facilities Boston Aug 21 The Life saving Ser vice of the United States Is so seriously crippled that many of the stations are struggling along with about SO per cent of the full force according to a statement made to day by Gen Supt Sumner I I Kimball who is attending the annual i meeting of the life saving board in thU city I Supt Kimball says that the crippled condition of the service is due to the lack of good surfmen and he attributes the I cause to the poor pay offered and the lack I of provision for a man who after he has spent the best years of his life in the i serv Ice finds hlmsejf incapacitated for his work by old age or accident To remedy the matter Supt Kimball suggests a retirement 8 stem which would keep in the service the good men who are now taking I up other pursuits and which would at the same time attract good men to the iiie saring corps Roache Marv Wise Teresa Horriran 15c to 90c Annle appetite improves their digestion builds up their general health Ask your doctor if be endorses this One knee As the slow minutes passed the situation became more interesting to us both because we knew that sooner or later we should arrive at the station There I Intended to turn the tables on my bandit friend from Prussia Perhaps he read my thoughts He glanced uneasily out of the car window but as yet there was nothing to see except flat dusty plains symmetrical poplars and the level western sun smoldering behind a straight band of violet haze Disgust had succeeded my first alarm that too gave way to curiosity then to ennui Pooh thought I the game Is in my own hands when we come to the station Before long I felt that I was going to yawn and this pleased me For thought I there are not so many people In this worid who find time to yawn into the muzzle of a pistol Pardon monsieur I said but I am about to commit a breach of etiquette May I dissimulate the Indiscretion with mv hand He said nothing I enjoyed my yawn the more because I noticed he bad not raised his too convenient pistol I am under obligations to you I said May I search In my pockets for my handkerchief Are you armed he demanded I am doubly armed with innocence I replied flippantly Anything else he Insisted sarcastically Oh nothing but a Colts six shooter Then never mind your handkerchief for the present he returned As I didnt need my handkerchief I didnt mind After a while he again asked me for my parole and Ijrefused I tell you no harm need come to you he repeated I said nothing But It may unless you listen to me and do what I say he added with unconcealed impatience Oh Ill listen I replied but I wont give you my parole If I did Id keep It even to you He eyed me narrowly for a moment or two durln which I affected an interest In the sunset that I did not feel May I trouble you for your attention he said angrily You are In a position to trouble me for more than that I Imprudently replied For a second I thought he was going to shoot me A cool current of air from the ventilator dried the sudden perspiration on my cheekbones When he had mastered his fury which was exclusively Internal he said Monsieur I have subjected myself to sneers and Insinuations from an American Our relative positions at this moment do not allow me to resent any affront from you nor even to inform you In suitable terms of my opinion concerning you But when I have the pleasure to return you your passport I shall permit myself thei honor of Insulting you Tour presence alone will accomplish that I replied He controlled himself so beautifully that It occurred to me I was playing a sorry game like a little boy making faces at a caged panther Come said after all I suppose even highwaymen are sensitive at times Im obliged to you for your self control I cant make you out and I dont particularly care to but I warn you frankly that If I can get my passport back Ill do It Why I continued this thing Is monstrous By heaven It I had a chance only half a chance be true Oh quite true hlch will be true he repeated coldly If you do this you will avoid serioua convenience If I dont what then I asked Youll find out he said with the faintest a Inkle of amusement in his eyes Of course I immediately made up my mind to show hs passport whether anybody asked for It or not Natu ally would not care to have me show his passport to the police Then It occurred to me that he certainly was not obliged to give me 11s passport and run the risk of my Showing It Perhaps after all It was to my advantage to take his strange advice He must have divined my perplexity for he said Its good advice take It Out of the corner of my eye through the car window I saw signs that we Wjere approaching the city of Luxembourg
