and Quirky Time of rams 1 oour ana ou EtiDBin By STANLEY MILLIKEN How many occasions have you fans pastlmed at the Georgia avenue grounds and witnessed one team receive nine bases on balls in six frames and the liberal slabbist pull through unscathed This might seem a really laughable question but it is exactly what happened yesterday Ray Keating working in the final of the series for the Yankees was the donor of these free tickets He tried to give the homefolks runs but they re fused to take advantage of the offerings and suffered an overwhelming defeat thereby With any other club in the league outside of the Nationals opposing Keating wouldnt have lasted more than three innings Instead he went all the way being scored on in the ninth When he eased up and permitted Henry and McBrlde to double in succession and ihe former to score the Griffmens only in Yankees Hammer Ayers The Yankees in the meantime had driven Doc Ayers off the slab His distress signal was hoisted in the second the bunching of four hits being the sign for Sam Rice to go to the firing line Sam went along pretty well for a while Keating singled off him with the bases full immediately after he relieved Ayers but he rushed the re mainder of the inning through without further damage There was a bit of bad baseball behind Rice in the seventh which with three hits one a triple by Bauman gave the Yankees another trio of runs and practically put the nightmare out of reach The Yankees didnt stop at this stage They kept up the bombardment and when Rice support crumpled in the ninth he too weakened and the Donovanites brought their total of runs up to nine It would be a waste of space to fully describe how the Yankees made their runs A glance at the base hit column of the opposing clubs tells a story In itself a sad one tis true from a local standpoint Nationals Batting Weak The Nationals at times played bad ball in the field but their worst part was the utter failure to get a base knock off the liberal Keating It was really pittful to watch the Nationals pass opportunity by In six of the nine frames They seemed to have the right idea but they Just couldnt hit the ball There was a turning point tQ this ball game It was the fifth Keating had given three bases on balls in the previous round and the trio lingered ori the bases awaiting succor that never came All looked for a break or a base hit Binoculars couldnt have discovered the latter Anyhow the flth was the killer the real Joke round Rice started it with a base hit to the infield the second blow off Keating Moeller walked and so did Foster This filled the sacks but Danny helped unload them He suddenly became afflicted with the sleeping sickness Walters catching for the Yankees woke him up and Moeller finished his nap on the bench Moellers Nap Harms Buf Keating was inclined the other way He passed Milan and again the I 11 Griff Parts With Rondeau Acosta to Join Nationals Sends Frenchman to Minneapolis in Exchange for Cuban Locals Sorely in Need of Better Offense The Avenue at Ninth bricks were clogged This on balls would have shoved Rice over the plate and forced the Yankee infield on MJhe grass a position that no ball club relishes on defense Donovans team was working under a three run margin at the time The Nationals would have had a run over and three on with no one out But as It was the bases were full when Shanks came up The Yankees fell back to their second line of trenches laying for a double play It was executed cleanly when Shanks hit to Peckinpaugh who with Gedeon as the pivot finished the Job by throwing to Plpp Shanks hit had the infield been playing In where it would have had not Moeller been nipped off the bag would have gone through Jlere is the box score Give it a thorough looking over It may prove Interesting in some ways Score AB BH BB SO 6BP0 A By STANLEY MILLIKEN Henri Rondeau is through as a member of the Washington Baseball Club The Frenchman goes to Minneapolis of the American Association whence he came In his stead returns little Merito Acosto the Cuban to once more fight for his place in the big league baseball sun The passing of Rondeau announced by Manager Griffith last night does not come as a surprise The handwriting has been on the walL Two weeks past in these columns It was predicted that unless there was a general Im provement In Rondeaus work hf would alter base not last Now Griffith has become con taps are sounded over the 1916 campaign It seems a shame with a pitching staff such as the Nationals possess that there is not some way to add bat Especially Favored by Attendance New York July 5 Who said the national pastime was dying Yesterday 28000 paid admissions at the Polo grounds and swelled the seasons receipts for the Giants and the Robins It is estimated that more than 10 000 persons parted with real money to witness big league games yesterday vlnced that the Frenchman is not of major league caliber hence the deal which sends him from our midst and gives the Cuban another chance Rondeau it will be recalled was glv en a trial with the Nationals last sea son His legs were bad and he was cast adrift early in the spring However he went back to Minneapolis and had a great year after a poor start finishing with a batting average around 13B This mark caught the eye of Griffith and Rondeau was brought here for another trial The failure of Rondeau to liver up to expectations was a blow to Grimtn The Nationals needed batting strength Rondeau was the man counted upon to plug one of the two big gaps In the outfield He was tried but found wanting Rondeau seems to be a one day ball player He will hit well at times nd then fall down miserably but he has been no worse than some of the others on the Washington Club pay Rondeau will make a valuable ball player for Cantlllon who is glad to get him back Out in the West the Frenchman has always looked like major league timber but only at times has he shown much ability here Acosta was a mere boy when Griffith brought him from the island In fact he was not quite 16 years of age Cantlllon wanted an outfielder when he parted with Rondeau Acosta during the greater part of his stay here warmed the bench only now and then being permitted to play He was the ninver with whom Griffith parted In Minneapolis he has been a regular and according to reports has improved wonderfully in his work A natural hitter fast and like all other Cubans the possessor of a great throwing arm he has been the talk of the American Association circuit and at the present time is hitting around 280 a mark which if he can attain it here will make him invaluable It is more than likely that Rondeau win rienart the latter part of the week and Acosta retilrn here within the next few days Fielder Jones Brownies reached port yesterday evening and will remain here for a series at the Georgia avenue ball vard It is likely Jones will work either Davenport or Park this afternoon Griffith named Boehllng as his choice Howard Shanks has a very sore rlghrr arm and wouldnt be third sacking were the Nationals not in a crippled condition In one of the Independence day games Shanks was forced to hustle a throw while off his balance and he wrenched his arm It has given him much pain and it is impossible for him to throw overhand He should be resting the injured member but he has plucklly stuck to his post knowing how badly handicapped the team is at me present time The Nationals gave a horrible exhibition of our great pastime in the final with the Yanks yesterday Their fleld lng was sloppy at times and although no one ever accused them or expected them to hit like several other of the American League clubs their offensive was about as bad as one could witness Keating set the table f6r a banquet but It looked like a free lunch counter when the finger bowls were passed around The Nationals balked on getting runs even after Keating had passed nine batters six of them coming in the fourth and fifth frames Only the lower end of the batting order Henry and McBrlde saved a total annihilation of our forces their doubles during the dying moments scoring the lone tally The Nationals are capable of playing better ball than they did yesterdaj All will agree with that Unless the team shows a stlffer punch thsre ls golnj to be but one answer second division with the
