Lee Moy Sparks Struggling Reds By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 14 Staunton, Leader, Wednesday, Moy 19, 1971 Thrill Isn't Gone For Jim Lonborg Vf j(f)WNS starter Barry Lersch. Then, after an infield hit by Johnny Bench and a double by Tony Perez in the fifth, May drilled a two-run single to left. May, who suffered torn knee ligaments in a spring training collision with Tim Foli of the Mets and didn't get back into regular action until April 23, has slammed 10 hits, including three homers, in his last six games. Dave Cash looped a run-scoring single with two out in the ninth, carrying the Pirates past Montreal and into a virtual tie with New York for the East Division lead. Bob Johnson, driven from the mound in the first inning of his previous start, went the distance scattering six hits for the Pirates, who trail the Mets by percentage points in the standings following their seventh victory in 10 games.

Home runs by Hank Aaron, hot-hitting Ralph Garr and Clete Boyer helped the Braves repulse a late New York rally at Atlanta. Aaron belted his 13th homer, after recovering from a knee injury, drove in three runs with a single and his seventh homer of the season Tuesday night as the struggling Reds nipped the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3. The defending National League champs, mired in fifth place in this year's West Division race, have won just six of 16 starts in the month of May and homers by May have contributed to five of those victories. In other NL games, Pittsburgh edged Montreal 3-2; Atlanta downed the New York Mets 8-6; San Francisco clipped the Chicago Cubs 7-3; St. Louis shaded Los Angeles 6-5 and Houston nudged San Diego 3-2.

Pete Rose gave Cincinnati a 1-0 first inning jump with his fourth homer, but the Phillies took the lead in the second on run-producing singles by Roger Freed and Terry Harmon. May tied it in the bottom of the inning with a drive into the upper left field seats off Phils' a two-run shot in the first inning. In the third, Garr, the league's top batter at .400, connected for the third time in two nights before Boyer's three-run blast. Marty Perez' triple keyed a two-run sixth for Atlanta, which offset the Mets' four-run flurry in the eighth. Bob Aspromonte socked two homers for the Mets and singled during the eighth inning uprising.

Bobby Bonds cracked a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly as the Giants snapped Chicago's winning streak at six games and maintained an 8-game bulge over second-place Atlanta in the West. Ken Henderson's two-run single capped a five-run San Francisco burst in the sixth that assured Ron Bryant of his fourth victory in five decisions. The Cardinals, who blew a 4-0 first inning lead, broke a 5-5 deadlock in the ninth on Jose Cardenal's bases-loaded single off the glove of Los Angeles third baseman Bobby Valentine. Heydays have been few and far between for the Cincinnati Reds this spring, but they've been making the most of their May days. (AP)-The second game of the world chess championship quarterfinal match between grandmasters Bobby Fischer of the United States and Mark Taimanov of the Soviet Union was adjourned Tuesday night on the 45th move. Fischer, playing white, was a pawn ahead and in a position where he normally would force a win. The game was to be continued Wednesday. Fischer leads the 10-game match, 1-0. The winner will advance in the challengers', round, with the survivor to meet world champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union for the title in 1972.

IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY Though professional football's 1971 league season won't get underway for some four months, NFL teams are doing spring workouts. Here, Larry Zelina, Cleveland Brown wingback from Ohio State, gets a handoff from Mike Ciler of Iowa during a Rookie Day workout in Cleveland. Looking on is Steve Engel of Colorado. By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Jim Lonborg found the thrill wasn't gone. Sam McDowell discovered where the strike pitch was.

A hurricane of cheers fired up Lonborg's triumphal return to Boston as the former Cy Young winner pitched inspired relief to help the Red Sox stop Detroit 5-3 Tuesday night. McDowell, meanwhile, gained a Cleveland victory inspite of himself as he issued ten walks before leaving in the seventh inning in a 7-3 Indian walkaway over Washington. "I was overwhelmed," said Lonborg, speaking of the cheers of 13,021 that welcomed him home to Fenway Park. "I was shaking inside I had goose bumps. I was surprised.

I didn't expect it." Slim Jim responded to the acclaim with three hitless innings as Boston wiped out a 3-2 lead on Rico Petrocelli's three-run homer in the seventh. McDowell, despite his wild-ness, had a no-hitter through six innings. But Cleveland Manager Alvin Dark insisted McDowell wasn't going the route no-hitter or not. Sudden Sam suddenly lost his "classic" by giving Joe Foy a single leading off the seventh. Dark moved in a hurry to replace McDowell with reliever Vince Colbert.

"Foy hit a terrible pitch," said McDowell, who won his first game as a starter this year. "I threw terrible pitches all night and got away with it. I pitched a terrible game." In the other American League games, Baltimore beat New York 6-2; California turned back Minnesota 3-2 and Oakland trimmed Milwaukee 5-2. Rain postponed Chicago at Kansas City. Lonborg, the former ace of the Red Sox pitching staff, had nothing but trouble after the 1967 World Series.

First he broke his leg in a skiing accident, then developed a chronic sore arm and was finally dismissed to the minors last year. He pitched his way back to Boston from Louisville with a hot early start this season. While Lonborg was working his magic, the Red Sox' bats came alive in the seventh on a single by Reggie Smith and double by Carl Yastrzemski before Petrocelli's clout. Colbert held Washington to one run in his three-inning re- lief stint as McDowell gained his second victory in seven decisions. The other triumph was in relief.

Paul Blair sailed the first pitch of the game into the right-center field seats and Brooks Robinson unloaded a tie-breaking two-run homer in the fourth in the Baltimore success. Mike Cuellar beat New York for the eighth time in nine decisions since coming to the American League. Tom Murphy scattered eight hits and won his first game since April 7 as California stopped Minnesota. Murphy, who had lost five straight since winning his first decision last month allowed only two outfield putouts. Four of the Twins' hits failed to leave the infield.

Jim "Catfish" Hunter fired a three-hitter for his seventh straight victory and Rick Monday, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando ripped home runs as Oakland trimmed Milwaukee. Hunter struck out nine and held the Brewers hitless in every inning but the fourth and ninth. Sport Shorts By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK (AP)-Bobby Woodhouse and his father, Hedley, combined to win a $193.20 daily double at Aqueduct race track Tuesday, the first time in memory a father-son jockey duo has accomplished the feat at a New York track. Bobby took the first race astride First Postage at $13.60. Hedley won the second with Merry Link at $28.60.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)-Dan Devine, head coach and general manager of the Green Bay Packers, became a grandfather Tuesday. Devine, 46, said his oldest daughter, Mary Jo Carver, gave birth to a girl in Manhattan, Kan. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce. mm.

mm ESI IB Si" Dundee to Root For Jimmy Ellis BtwOO Store vmffloimiimii MIAMI (AP) Angelo Dundee trains both Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Ellis but if the two boxers clash he'll be rooting for Ellis. "It would be the only fair thing to do," said the noted trainer. "I am not a man if I do otherwise." Dundee's association with Ellis is stronger than his dealings with Ali. He's also Jimmy's manager. A clash between the two Louisville-born boxers would be "the most logical match today," Dundee said.

The manager-trainer handled Ali when the 29-year-old fighter lost to Joe Frazier in what has been known as "The Fight." As manager, Dundee handles Ellis in every boxing department from booking matches to dividing paychecks. His dealings with Ali are limited to the role of hired trainer. Ellis served as Ali's sparring partner in the days when the Louisville Lip was punching his way to the top as Cassius Clay. And Ali hasn't let Ellis forget that.
