FIRE TEST A SUCCESS Chief. Belt Proves Value of pressure System. WATER ThROWN UP 198 TEET Wittant Uze of Entfse and with How Attached Directly to Hydrant Strums Were Shot Upward for Great Distances. to Afford Better Protection In the DowntownSectlcn of tie City. In the presence of a number of Insur.

ance and business men. and Commission era Macfarland and West Fire Chief Belt yesterday made several Illustrations of the protection afforded by a pressure water system tat the hydrant at Eigh teenth and streets xorthwest. Every test was regarded as a complete success and as the apparatus was being hauled away the chief was congratulated on what he is doing toward securing better dye protection in Washington. Chief Belt explained that the hydrant was attached to the main from Fort Reno and that the results obtained in the experiment would be only one- third those of a Inch main. such it tsproposed to establish in the downtown district.

As the mighty streams' of water ehqt through th ito a height of IX feet was difficult for the spectators to' realize. the power of water thrown with three tIzres. the force. Water Thrown 198 Feet The first test was with two two-inch lines and. the water was thrown 193 feet with a pressure of only sixty pounds.

The second experiment was with the use of four lines into a deluge set and under 100 pound. pressure the water was thrown 752 feet. With six lines and a one-inch lip the water was thrown 182 feet under 100 pounds' pressure. Under seventy pounds pressure and with tluet lines with a one-and-a-half-inch tip water was thrown 193 feet. The most Impressive test was' Jhe throwing of a stream of water from a forty-foot ladder rigged up as a water tower.

With a Siamese line and a one- inch tip water was thrown 172 feet under a pressure. of 2 pounds With a seven water was hurled 130 feet The last test was made with two Ingle lines of hose with tips- of' one-and-a-halt' inches a stream being thrown 185 feet. Might Do Work of Six Engines. Both Commissioners were highly grati Sled with tests. Commissioner Macfarland Bunder whose supervision the fire department comes said that next fall Tie would recommend to Congress that 750 GOO be appropriated for tile.

Installing of mains for a pressure service In the downtown district. At one time during th tests there were six 3nes of hose" attached to the hydrant. each throwing forth a stream equal to that which an engine is now requiredto produce in th city. With a practical amount of hoset it' was pointed out that water from a number of hydrants could be brought into play on fire downtown and each or these hydrants represent the work now done by" six engines. At' present some Interchangeable tire' hydrants are being installed of a type available for the present system as well at for a high- pressure system.

Congress was urged at the last session to appropriate 750000 for a pressure flre service but the proposition was not regarded favorably by the House Com mlttee on Appropriations and tile item was not Included.
