Greatest Athlete IK One day In the spring of 1908 Skim Warner the physical director at tbelJar llsle Indian School hadiils redskin stars training on the athletic field at Carlisle A squad was clustered around the jumping standards where Warner was attemptingattempting to show the Jumpers how to clear the crossbar a la Mike Sweeney of course George Horlne had not been heard of at that time The crossbar had been placed at a height which all the jumpers had failed to clear Warner had stepped to the standards and was preparing to lower the bar when one of the athletes touched him on the shoulder and said Wait a minute Mr Warner Jim he wants to jump Ha Ha He tlnk hes a grasshopper Warner turned and saw one of the students an Indian boy dressed In a working blouse and overalls just as he had come out of the shop where he was learning a trade Warner was preparing to shoot the buck away and tell him to stop bothering the athletes when the young ster approached the standards and springing from the ground sailed easily over the crossbar Warner knows an athlete when he sees one Say you shouted the coach go to the gymnasium and tell Mike to give you an athletic suit and a pair of spiked shoes Then come out here and get to work Youre a member of the track team now King Calls Him Greatest Athlete Four years later the same Indian stood before the King of Sweden in the huge white walled stadium In Stockholm where the pick of the worlds athletes had been in competition The Swedish ruler clasped hia hand and said You sir are the most wonderful athlete In the world The young Indian lad who was discovered by Warner at Carlisle in 1908 and Jim Thorpe the greatest athlete in the world are one and the same person What Thorpe has done since 190S would fill a book Tecumseh Sitting Bull and other chieftains never did as much on the warpath as James Thorpe has done on the sporting trail Jim comes pretty near being the noblest redskin of them all Just now the world is ringing with praise of the great work Thorpe has done on the gridiron Last fall as well as this he earned the coveted football honor a place on the All Amerlcan eleven What he did in athletics last summer he won both the pentathlon and the decathlon the two all round events at the Olympic games and the all round championship of the United States and shattering the worlds record held by Martin Sheridan is fresh in the minds of all followers of sport Thorre pitched for the Carlisle baseball team and showed such class that the scouts of several big league teams camped on his trail well founded rumors having it that he has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates and will accompany that team on Its spring training trip Thorpe has played almost every position in baseball but likes pitching the best An Ail Round Athletic Star He is a star basketball player and can play any position on the five He is a member of the Carlisle lacrosse and hockey teams and is known as the best tennis and handball player In the school He shines at Indoor baseball just as bril Hantly as he shines In the outdoor game Among other things Jim Is a great gymnast and is proficient at swimming skating snowshoeing rowing and other activities About the only things Thorpe cannot do is play the piano and dance His utmost desire seems to be to master those accomplishments Upon his return to the Carlisle Indian School after the Olympic trip he told Warner he wanted to quit work until he could learn to dance sing and play the piano Warner had to compromise by letting Jim take some time from his athletic work and practice music singing and dancing under competent instructors Jim is about ready to break into society laughed Warner in telling his latest gossip about Thorpe while coming flown on the train from Providence after the Carlisle Brown game James Thorpe was born 25 years ago on the reservation of the Sac and Fox Indians In the middle West and when the tribe moved to Oklahoma he vent with it His early life was spent mostly In the open and his love of sports was born in him When he was a boy he showed unusual skill In the sports of the red man and the story Is told in Carlisle of how he chased a rabbit for 10 miles ran It down and captured It Even the stoical redskins like a joke now and then Weil Versed in Forest Lore Hunting and fishing were Jims vocation and avocation before he went to Carlisle Needless to say he is well versed in forest lore He knows how to wait beside a runway and stalk a deer how to trap fox bear and other furry creatures how to call moose in the nutting season how to lure the trout from beneath his cool retreat at the bottom of the pool and how to do many other things appertaining to wild life He is a good shot and is a mighty hunter among the Indians There was a tinge of sadness to Thorpes return to America after his sensational performances at the Stockholm Olympiad for he had no parents to greetr him When the celebration at Carlisle was planned Mr Friedman superintendent of the Indian School wired to Prague Okla to have Thorpes parents come to Carlisle as the guests of the government and greet their homecoming son The telegram brought the laconic reply Thorpes parents dead nonwwnere in the happy hunting grounds however perhaps Jims parents vmj over me aoings or the famous son remaps around tne ghostly campfires tales of him whom the Kins of Swm called the most wonderful athlete In the worm are told as pipes are Dassed around the circle Jim Thorpe is a big uuej inorpes eariy environment laid the foundation for his splendid physique He was normal when he entered the Carlisle Indian School He was a youngster then ne naa spent more than ten years in the Institution and his entrance ATamtnn tlon showed ho tnvwuiUHBaiH in America But to building up this youth resort has not been had to unusual methods which refutes the allegation of critics all over mo worm mat tne American plan of de veloping athletic prodieles is armm pllshed by specialization carried to unusual extremes Glenn Warner has never stultified his pupils by extreme treat ment Thorpe has lived plainly and while he ha conformed to Warners general In etructlons as to his methods of living he haa not been made an exception at the Carlisle school by special treatment or privileges Ttwmfa victories In the pentathlon a4 thft decathlon at the Stockholm TWO IOTSBEgBlSlllEMYElt worlds all round champion The eyehts comprising the decathlon were different from those comprising the ten cpntests which go to make up the American ill round championship program The Swedish athletes bad shown such splendid form at the decathlon that Ernie Hert berg the Swedish trainer practically was sure the event would he won by a Swedish athlete Had Faith in Sheridan Hertberg who formerly trained the Irish American A handled Martin Sheridan In the all round championship of America in 1909 when Sheridan hung up his great record of 7385 points Before the American team sailed for Stockholm Hertberg said he thought Sheridan was the greatest all round athlete in the world but that Sheridan had gone back and would be beaten by one of the Swedish stars Sheridan however did not go to Sweden Hertberg had not been figuring on Thorpe but after the third event in the decathlon was decided Hertberg strolled over to where some of the American of i flcials were seated and said When I saw Sheridan compete In 1909 I thought I never would see his like again Now I see a second and a greater Sheridan This Indian is the greatest athlete I ever set eyes on Not that he is a greater natural athlete than Sheri dan was but he seems to have profited by the mistakes made by Martin Thorpe won the decathlon just as he previously had captured the pentathlon the five event all round competition In the pentathlon Thorpe did 23 feet 2 7 10 inches In the broad jump 153 feet 219 20 Inches in the javelin throw 22 9 10 seconds in the 200 meter run 116 feet 8 4 10 inches in the discus throw and 444 8 10 for the 1500 meter run Thorpe captured four firsts and one second in the five events His Decathlon Figures In the decathlon or ten event all round competition Thorpes showing was more marvelous He ran 100 meters in 112 seconds broad jumped 22 feet 23 Inches put tjje shot 42 feet 545 inches high jumped 6 feet 16 inches ran 400 meters In 521 5 seconds won the 110 meter high hurdles In 15 3 5 seconds threw the discus 121 feet 39 inches hurled the Javelin 149 feet U2 inches pole vaulted 10 feet 795 inches and ran 1500 meters In 4401 Thorpe rolled up 8412955 points In the decathlon or 68846 points more than his nearest competitor Welslander of Sweden who was second with 7724493 points Thorpes nearest American rival Donahue of Los Angeles who fin ished fifth in the competition was more than a thousand points behind Thorpe In capturing the pentathlon and the decathlon at the Olympiad Thorpe became the possessor of the two most valued trophies of the meeting Both now rest in the trophy hall at Carlisle One is the massive bronze bust of King Gustav of Sweden which was presented to Thorpe by the king himself for winning the penta thlon and the other is the Czar of Russias decathlon trophy a silver gem studdedstudded model of a viking ship Is Complimented by Taft One of Thorpes most prized possessions Is a letter which was sent to him by President Taft upon the champions return to the United States President Taft wrote I have much pleasure in congratulating you on account of your noteworthy victory at the Olympic games in Stockholm Your performance was one of which you may well be proud You have set a high standard of physical development which is only attained by right living and right thinking and your victory will serve as an Incentive to all to improve those qualities which characterize the best quality of American citizen It is my earnest wish that the future will bring you success in your cnosen neid ox endeavor After his return to this country Thorpe further showed his wonderful athletic versatility by capturing i the national all round championship of America rolling up a total of 7476 points and smashing by 91 points the worlds all round athletic record held by Martin Sheridan An idea of Thorpes wonderful athletic versatility can be gained from the following He has run 100 yards in 10 1 5 seconds has done the 120 yard high hurdles 15 3 5 seconds and the 220 yara low nurcaes in to seconas nas turned a quarter of a mile in 52 3 5 seconds has put the 16 pound shot 45 feet 1 inch has scaled the discus 125 feet 8 inches has thrown the hammer 125 feet has pole vaulted 10 feet 8 inches and has high jumped 6 feet 4 Inches and broad jumped 33 feet 3 inches No man in the annals of athletics ever could boast of such a record Marvel at His Prowess 3 vplTBSUdjMiaedIor Mwthe title of thelthat of a jackrabbtt Ho Those who saw Thorpe In the Carlisle Army and the Carlisle Brown football games marveled at his exhibition Both the Brunonians and the Cadets were laying for Thorpe but he handled rivals as if they were babies Thorpe slashed through the line flashed around the end and bowled irresistibly through broken fields until players as well as spectators began to wonder whether the Indian was human After the Carlisle Army game Capt Devore of the Army was seen in the dressing room Devore was an all Amer lcan tackle selection last season and many experts will pick him again this year though his work this year was not up to the standard of last Devore Is one of the strongest men in football a giant in size standing 6 feet 4 inches in football gear and Is symmetrically built That Indian said the Army captain In discussing Thorpe is the greatest player I have stacked up against in my five years experience He Is superhuman thats all There is no stopping him Talk about your Ted Coys Why this Indian is as far ahead of the great Yale back as Coy was ahead of a prep school player Thorpe smashes Into the line like a pair of Coys There is nothing he cant do He kicks superbly worms his way through a field like a combination of greyhound jack rabbit and eel and is cunning and strategic as a fox He follows Interference like the hangers on follow an army You may have your Lefty Flynns Brick leys Bakers and Coys but Thorpe for mine every time Greatest Football Halfback The wonderful work Thorpe has done on tne gridiron this season is fresh In the mind of every one There is hardly an expert in the land who has not or will not select Thorpe as an All American star He is one of the greatest If not the greatest halfbacks in the annals of lootball Thorpe appears at halfback however because he is of the greatest use at that position Put him anywhere on the eleven and he still would be a star He has weight and strength for any line position and sDeed for an end He has pvatv attribute that goes to make up a great rootoau player He is a master at han dltng punts and In a class by himself at running them back Thorpe combines the crushing powers of a Wendell the drop kicking accuracy of a Brickley the elusiveness of a Baker and the punting ability of a Felton or a Flynn He has scored more points this seaspn than any two other players Thorpe is a man of whalebone whose anatomy is impervious to Injury a human torpedo that plows its way through any sort of opposition Thorpe charges lower than any other player on the gridiron He always coo and alert and never loses his head He is possessed of such strength that is tne Doast or the manvwho cansay he has tackled Thorpe apd pulled him to earth alone Thorpes dodging ability deiplte his ejze and welghU is like RDNETCHYOrSTLQOlJ Both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh have turned down proffered trades Plays at Charlottesville Charlottesville Va Dec 14 October 11 Princeton at Washington October 18 Georgia at Atlanta November 1 Van derbilt at Charlottesville November 15 Georgetown at Washington November 27 North Carolina at Richmond While the above named games have not been officially determined upon it is more than likely that they will be included in Virginias football schedule for 1913 Nothing positive has yet been given out by the management but it is rumored around college that Virginias request for a game with Princeton in Washington has been received favorably and that the Tiger management has suggested October 11 as the date the day of the Georgetown Navy contest at Annapolis While October 11 is a little early in the season for Virginia to even hope to make a good showing against the strong Princeton eleven yet it is realized that it Is probably the very best that can be done If an agreement is reached on the date mentioned it is more than likely that the Virginia squad will be called together before the opening of college This course may be decided upon In any event however as the players were very slow rounding into form the past season and did not strike their stride until the first of November with the seasons schedule half over May Get Ready in Maine If Pop Lannlgan has his way the members of the squad will be called together certainly by the first of September at his summer home on the coast of Maine There under the immediate supervision of the veteran trainer the men will be gradually rounded Into form All of the letter men of this year save Capt Tpdd ahd Fullback Smith have signified their intention of returning to college next fall and it is believed that nearly all of them could make It convenient to journey to Maine for the preliminary preparation needed for the strenuous schedule that is being mapped out for the team by the advisory board of the General Athletic Association and Manager McMorrles It will be remembered that it was the 1 intention of Head Coach Elliott to assemble his men at one of the mountain resorts In Virginia Rawley Springs in the latter part of the past summer One or two of the players actually reported but the others were slow In responding and the plan fell through at the last moment Should Make Players Fit Two or three weeks spent in the delightful climate ort the Maine coast should put the players dn fair physical condition and when the gong sounds on Lambeth field at the opening of the session the men should be In fit shape to profit by the instruction of the coaches and ready to Jump into the earlier contests on the schedule which next fall promises to be more strenuous than the preliminary contests In years past Swarthmore Will lams and Trinity of Connecticut are yet to be heard from and should two of them accept Virginia will have her work cut out for her In October Against teams of such caliber the eleven should be going at a pretty lively clip by the first of that month Then too as Georgia will probably be taken on the long trip of the team to Atlanta will practically spoil ten days of practice Virginia wants to profit by her experiences of the past season and every possible effort will be made to get the players in shape for the strong schedule now in preparation turns instantaneously and his straight arm work is a thing of beauty It would not be surprising to see Thorpe playing for the Pittsburgh team of the National League next season though the general Impression la that Fred Clarke will farm put the IndianIndian to a minor league team for seasoning It Is possible however that Thorpe may make good Tight off the reel as a utility man for he can play any position in baseball In great fashion Whether he Is ripe for the big leagues remains to be seen Save that his color is less pronounced than that of the average aborigine Jim Thorpe is a typical Indian Ho has the high cheekbones jet black hair and other characteristics that go with the native1 Americans His legs are long but well sin ewed his torso is massive yet symmetrical In street xlothes Thorpe looks to be of greyhound type and belles his maSslveness When striDtmdi however the unusual physical deVelOpfi ment is sinmngiy evident He is as near the perfect type otmanas could BRITISH BOOKS MUCH WORRIED Decision That Gambling Debt Paid by Cheok Is Illegal Upsets Whole System London Dec 14 Bettors and bookmakers here are seriously disturbed by a decision of Judge Rentouh thata gambling debt paid toy check Is illegal and that therefore the value of the debt can be recovered hy the debtor Mr Cunningham legal representative of many turf commission agents replies to the following suppositious question put by the Dally Mall You are a bookmaker say and I ami introduced to you and we open an account I back certain horses to win and on the Monday of each week we settle our accounts If I have won on the week you give me a check for the amount of mv winnings If I have lost I give you a check for the amount of my various stakes Suppose at the end of two or three weeks I have lost 200 which I have paid by check tould I under Judge Rentouls decision recover that 200 although I have lost it in bets on the ground that payment by check In gaming transactions is illegal Certainly you could replied Mr Cunningham if Judge Rentouls finding istto stand Also if you had won and a bookmaker paid your winnings by cheek he could recover the amount although you had won The whole thing is absurd The decision cannot stand continued Mr Cunningham The principal of a well known firm of commission agents aaid that If Judge Rentouls decision was taken seriously book makers would he compelled to close their books King George Not to Quit Turf Some Interesting speeches were made at the Gimcrack Club dinner at New York recently and In one of them the lie was given to the oft repeated rumors that It is King Georges Intention to discontinue the sport of horse racing Replying to the toast of the The Jockey Club Sir John Thursday said he had Lord Derbys authority for stating that he had been the personal recipient of the kings assurance that he had no intention of withdrawing from racing and indeed meant to participate in it in the future as far as his many duties and engagements permitted him Sir John added that England remains the recruiting ground to which foreigners have tp refer to replenish their stock Speaking on the question ot breeding Mr Hiilton whose Flippant won the Gimcrack stakes which gave him the honor of occupying the chair said he thought pace was the deciding factor as to the merits of endurance The contests of today are far more keen and exacting than the old heats and a champion then would cut a very poor figure now The ideal test of merit is the fast mile and the horse which can succeed at that distance among the best class and in the best time is the horse that he wanted Fast Miler Is the Horse The fast mller Is the horse to breed from So long as this type fs produced and it is being produced there is no fear of decadence The most important test was the breeding test It would be found that the best stallions had proved their speed at about 1 mile They might of course have subsequently shown that they could stay longer distances as well But no great stallion had lacked speed It was the essential Even though they had won the best long distance races pure stayers he meant horses ot one pace but without speed had never been successful stallions How few Cesarewitch horses had succeeded as sires On the contrary In the Cambridgeshire a very fast run mile many winners have subsequently become successful in the stud The winners dfl the Ascot gold cup might be divided into two divisions the first consisting pt very members began the game against the Army team this season and it is likely that this number with a possible addition may5 enter Into the make up of next years team Never in the Wstoiry of football at the Naval Academy has one class given so many members to the team Several of these will be playing their fourth year as regulars on the Navy team next season Brown guard and Gilchrist end have played 4uring practically every game since they entered the Academy while two more Meltaavev and Rodes may be regarded as regulars since their entering year A year ago and this season the majority of the team members belonged to the class A full team from the second classould easily have been placed In the field this year and would haye been little below the standard of the team that represented the whole academy Indeed a team has been mapped which was so composed It was suggested that seven of the class play In their regular positions as follows Ingram left end Howe left tackle Brown right guard Ralston right tackle Gilchrist right end Leonard left halfback and Mc Reavey right halfback The backfleld could be completed by placing Rodes at fullback and Nicholls in Rodes place at quarterback The two holes In the line could be filled by putting Redman at left tackle and Walker at center It would require a keen Judge to find the difference in playing strength between this team and the regular arrangement The Navy team will lose by graduation next season only Hall left tackle a good man but whose place can be worthily filled by Redman Latimore Davis or Vaughan all of whom will be first class men The remarkable class of 1913 has determined that it will cap its career at the academy by a fourth successive victory so that it may be said that the Navy won from the Army every year the class was at Anapolls This Is why no one may look for a letting down in the efforts of the Navy team to win next year BOOSTS DISTANCE BUNKING Sullivan Gives Trophy to Be Held as Challenge Until Olympic Games New York Dec 13 In order to encourage distance running Sullivan has offered a silver belt to be held as a challenge trophy until the time of the next Olympic gamesf and to be competed for as often as any club receiving sanction may determine to put on a race According to Mr Sullivan the Idea was suggested by Sparrow Robertson In thi course of a conversation in which these old timers were comparing the field at the last 10 mile championship of the A A I with the number that used to compete week after week in the late seventies Robertson suggested that a Sullivan belt would have the effect of increasing the interest in long distance work and Mr Sullivan agreed to donate one It Is proposed to start with competitions at one hour and gradually Increase the distance A system of scoring has yet to be devised but some means will be found so that the belt may have a permanent owner as soon as It has performed its purpose of developing men for the next Olympic marathon HAS
