jAy aUen On the Cover Another ethnic show loaded with talent! 1 ml 4j Well, it happens every fall and it's that time of the year again. (Where did the summer go with all those reruns)? 'Tis the season for the public to slow down their hectic schedules (except for once-a-week foothall outings) and nestle into their overstuffed chairs, checking the new shows making debuts. Even the little ones get their chance to play TV critic on Saturday mornings with a revamping of cartoon characters guaranteed to take them from beneath the sea to the outer limits of the universe. Along the way will be intermittent I educational sen ices, mixed ith a couple of poltergeists and other spiritual phenomenons. Generally speaking, anyone who might want to play the role of critic during the first two weeks is always satisfied since the networks bend over backwards at this early time to get to the top of the ratings chart.

Fortunately, television's upper echelon has deemed this season of Fall feminine lineup The 1974-75 season seems to be loaded with new shows with a definite distaff emphasis. Our cover depicts five of the women which will be seen regularly this season. They are (top left to right) Jodie Foster of "Paper Teresa Graves of "Get Christie Valerie Harper of Theresa Wright of "That's My Mama" and, smack in the middle, the lovely Angie Dickinson who portrays "Police Freddie Prinze 1974-75 to be a pioneer year, with more ethnic shows, fewer new police programs and more "country flavored" telecasts. Expect to see a number of winners with this new batch of series as well. We'll be putting our money on one in particular, "Chico and The Man." Jack Albertson, a vet for years on TV (and in Crest commercials) is the senior member (The Man) of the twosome, playing an "irascible" garage owner.

But what is going to make the show swing will be a brand new face (and dialect) by the name of Freddie Prinze (Chico), TV's one and only unga-Rican. (Father is Hungarian, mother is Puerto Rican and the offspring is 'Dekalb Co. Press. Conversion charts are provided below. First number is actual channel number; second number indicates TV dial setting. This will be Freddie's first crack at a TV series. In fact, it will probably be his initial try at a number of things, being only a 20-year-old novice. He's been seen on talk shows with Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas and Johnny Carson.

We've had the pleasure to see him in action on the Carson show and it was that show (December, 1973) that got him the chance for the series. Talent spills out of this kid. With the same format as "Sanford and Son" (which preceeds "Chico and The Man" on Friday nights on NBC) it's got to be an ace. Prinze's spontaneous brand of humor will go hand-in-hand with the live audiences, stage and taping. (Triva note: Did you know that he used to practice routines in front of a mirror in a school washroom?) Some theorists tell us never to get our hopes up too high about any shows this early in the season but we'll have to make an exception with "Chico and The Man." Albertson is a great comic and (we hope) even a better straight man who knows how and when to deliver the right line.

Prinze should come across with the same inborn flare for humor that has gotten him this far in such a short time. With the facts stacked up like that, expect to see a lot more of this fella Prinze and The Man, Albertson.
