Oct. 3. The customary margin of one little run again cost the Washington baseball team the tame here to-day In the opening contest of the series. Patsy Donovan says its about the fortieth time It has happened this season and it was no surprise to the little crowd to see the visitors begin. packing up their bats in readiness to leave the field at the conclusion of the eighth inning.

None of the team seemed to take much Interest In the contest after they had had their little fling. It was a good game however full of good pitching and rapid fielding. Washington produced for a pitcher Case Patten whom Detroit has long coveted in vain while Detroit's fortunes were in the hands of young Jaeger. who pitched the season through in the Three I League. Each twirler was at his best.

Jaeger if anything having a shade the better of the contest. The first seven Innings were barren of result. the only scoring symptom being furnished by Detroit which in the third with one out produced a triple from Barretts bat. Jlmmle died at third however. when Hill threw McIntyre out.

Patters hats wasted a double for Washington In the same inning. Washington Starts Run Getting. Washington's scoring was the' first of the game. Jaeger being largely to blame by a base on balls which he Issued to littredge the first batter of the eighth inning. Patton bunted straight to Jaeger.

but the pitcher made a bad throw to second and both runner. were safe. Nill then bunted right in front of the plate and Drill with all the time in the world. give Kittredge still another life by a throw to Coughlln that nearly went into left field. The bases were filled for Hill who.

punched one through the closely drawn infield Kittredge and Patters scoring. Stahl who followed singled to left but Nill was nipped at the plate try- lug to come all the way from second on Jaeger followed this up by fanning Huels- man and holding Cassidy to an easy bounder to Coughlln. Detroit's case looked hopeless. but nei ther Nlll nor Patten covered first on McIntyre's slow one to Stahl. after Darrett lad struck out and Coughlln was tipped on the hand by an Inshoot.

Robinson here came to the rescue with a long drive to right. which Donovan missed In the supports of the fence. It went for three bags. Mclntyre and Coughlln scoring and Robinson following when Crawford sent a fly to O'Neill. Stahl opened the ninth with a single through the box and Donovan sacrificed.

Kittredge raised a pop fly to Lowe. however and Clarke sent up to bat for Pat. ten. struck out. A header Is carded for Wednee- day.

Ducky Holmes has thrown a knee out' of joint again. He has a difficult time keeping the bolts in his stilts this year. John Clarkson once a famous pitcher says his brother Walter will make good next season. Brother John said something like that last spring. Ned Harshen has seven players on his reserve list.

Out of that lot he should be able to pick a fair team for Brooklyn and give Baltimore a winner. The wisdom of the games schedule is now being proved. National League teams remain idle one day and play double-headers the next in order to draw a crowd. The New York papers have fallen on John T. Brush for his declination to play the Highlanders as If they had beervJylng back for the opportunity.

Chicago' Record-Herald. Owner Brush will not let the Giants play the American League champions but he has no objection to them playing lioboken and other clubs which are under the ban of the National League. It is not likely that it ever will succeed. for there are too many ready to sell out as they did hen the union existed a few years ago. Connie Mack attributes the low standing of the Athletics to the' fact that two of the outfielders have. batted poorly. the catchers have been very weak with the stick and Harry Davis the best man on the team.

But Brush and Mcpraw do ngs differently. The Detroit News has iTe following to say of George Nlll the Senators' new second baseman George Nill Is one of the fastest youngsters in the busl. ness. He was recommended to Washington by Jrmmy Ryan the league outfielder who Is captain of the Colorado Springs team. of which Nlll was a member.

Nill stood tenth in batting in the Western League last year. and Is. nearer the top this season. Nill la also one of the fastest infielders in the Western organization. He is a conscientious player without a thought of his record and is also a clever runner.

The outlook for a. strong varsity crew at Georgetown for next spring was greatly dimmed yesterday when news reacted tbe university that Vincent A. Brernner the captain would not return. Manager dpi received a letter from the oarsman yesterday in which he stated that he- had decided to give up his course at Georgei town and go Into business In Chicago. I Had.

Bremner returned he would have been graduated next June. The loss of the captain is the greatest which the Blue and Gray crew could suffer. He entered the law school two years i ago from St. Mary College. when he made quite a reputation as a.

ball player but. ire took to rowing. He was the most finished oarsman in the shell and after the memorable race at Poughkeepsie in 1903 in which Georgetown fished sec. end. the members of the crew unanimously elected Bremner despite the tact that It was his first year.

When the crew of last spring made such a poor showing at Poughkeepsle Bi was re-elected. The choice of a neV captain lies between Hayden. who has rowed three seasons and Graham. of two years' experience. Both of these men.

are good oarsmen. and both are seniors. A meeting of the men will be held in the near future to thocse a nej leader. Charged With Stealing Trousers. Charged with stealing a.

GEORGE WASHINGTON WINS' Randolph-Macon Was Too Light to Withstand Line Virginia Boys Weakened by the Absence of Several Players Injured in' Saturdays Game. Playing under the new name of George.

Washington Universltr. old. Columbians foottall team began the new year with a dean-cut victory over Randolph-Macon. of Ashland Va. on University Field yesterday afternoon.

Score. George. Wash ington 17 Macon While not detracting from the Victory of the local collegians It may be said that. the- YIr- gtnlana were not in form to meet a team which has played no games this year and Which outweighed the youngsters from across the Potomac Washlngtonlans attached considerable Interest to the contest. because three former Georgetown students are coaching the two elevens.

Alex Rorke who graduated last year at the Blue end Gray college is. teaching George Washington's squad the pigskin game while Charles Cox and Joseph Devlin are drilling the Randolph boys. The visitors looked to be good for a few. moments at the start when Washington Kicked off but after making. several futile attempts to get through the local collegians- fox' more than 6 yards.

Wash- Inrton grained the ball and. rushed It through for a touchdown In about five minutes' time. It was apparent then that the visitors were not equal to the task of holding their heavier opponents. and the locals employed their forces on the five spots filled with Virginia substitutes. After George Washington Invaded Randolph's goal once more the first half of fifteen minutes expired.

During the intermission Coaches Cot and Devlin assembled their- players and- gave theta a lecture on courage and aggressiveness which had a good effect upon the boys. for they held their opponents In the next half to five points. A dispute arose In the second half. Just before the Washington boys made their- last touchdown as to whether Randolph was not- entitled to a touchdown made after Winston lost the ball in a scrim mage. With tho oval almost under Randolph's goal it was passed to Half Back Winston who plungedinto the middle of the line.

Some one yelled The ball la lost. and before the players piled up Philpotts emerged with it and dashed off from the east goal to the west and planted the ball bejilnd the posts. It was a spectacular- sprint. with two Washington men endeavoring to head oft the tall play- er but Mr. Nellson declared the ball was out.

of play when Phllpott got It. thus forcing its return to the spot within a foot of Randolph's goal. After the grum. bling ceased Washington made a hole at center and Bruce Blelaski slipped through. The parental objection to having sens engage In.

the strenuous sport was illus- trated by an incident tnthis contest. Dur- tag the second half Right Guard Wunder' was carried off the fleld. knocked out In one or the scrimmages and just then a devoted mother among the crowd on the side lines broke through and catching. her son around the neck implored him ta give up the game. Virginias coaches pre.

vailed upon her to let him remain. Washington kicked off at the start a Virginia back catching on the yard line but before he could recover much of the- lost ground was downed. Randolph put up a clever' defense until the ball was lost to its eleven on a tumble. when Capt. Blelaski went' through an opening for yards.

The Randolph hopes began to wilt right then and the locals made gaina each time they smashed the opposing line Bielaskl being forced over for the first touchdown in five minutes. Klrkman kicked a pretty goal giving the Washing- 1 ton boys 6 points. The secdnd touchdown was made in almost as quick time the locals pounding way at the weaker line for steady gains. I Pull Rack West had the honor of planting- I the oval behind the posts this time. and.

again Klrkman kicked goal. After the next off Stevenson went through the Virginia right end and carried the- ball IS yards for a touchdown. but as he went out or bounds he had to bring the ball back to where lie crossed chalk line half way down the flell. Time was called after the next scrim- 1 mage which gave Washington another 10- 3 yard rain. 4 In the second half Randolph kicked 50 yards to to-Stevenson who returned the ball ftiie same distance before being downed Then the locals began to hammer the via- itors at their weak points but fqund the task.

harder. because of the ginger tho coaches had' Injected into the Randolph men. but forced the ball to within a yard of the goal. when Winston lost the oval and Philpotts made his Ion run for nothing. After putting.

the ball In play again 1 Bielaskl was pushed over for the final touchdown. Klrkman missed an easy goal this time and just otter the kickOff ths time limit expired. The summary G. W. Petitions.
