JUNE 2,1956 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH fAOJBflVfi The Church in Europe ILLUSTRATID SUNDAY SCHOOL 11SSON Before starting his second missionary Forbidden by the Spirit of Jesus to In Athens Paul aw an altar with the journey, Paul and Barnabas disputed preach in Asia, Paul had a vision in inscription, the Unknown God." Paul about taking John with them. Paul said the night of a man In Macedonia, nsk- told the 1 Athenians ot the living God and no. Finally Paul took Silas and Barnabas Ing him to come to Macedonia. took John. Paul look ship to Europe.

Then of Jesus Christ. Some scoffed; others sold they Would hear him further. When Jews in Corinth jeered at Paul's teaching he went to the house of Crispus, chief ruler of the synagogue, who believed and all his house with him. MEMORY The Church in Europe THE SPIRIT OF JESUS SENDS PAUL INTO NEW FIELDS The Apostle Paul was a restless, energetic man. Before his conversion he persecuted the Christians with vigor.

After his change of heart and life he could not be inactive for long. He had a constant urge to travel spreading the gospel of Christ wherever he went. From Antioch, where he began all his missionary journeys, he suggested to Barnabas that they go again to visit the cities where churches had been, established to "see how they Barnabas was willing, but he insisted upon taking John, surnamed Mark, with him. Paul took Silas and Buniba.s disagreed, and they argued until took Mark. This is HIP lust reference to Barnabas in the Book of Acts.

Barnabas and Mark sailed to Cyprus, Barnabas' original home. Paul and Silas traveled to Asia, through Syria and Cilica. At Derbe Paul met a young man whose mother was 'Jewish and his father Greek. This was Timothy who became his spiri- the magistrate ordered the Apostles to be beaten, then threw them into prison. During the night a great earthquake opened the prison doors so that everyone could have gone free.

Paul and Silas had been praying and singing God's praises before the shock camp. The jailer, who had been chosen to guard them, was about to kill himself thinking that all prisoners had escaped, but Paul called to him that no one had freed himself, and the jailer was so impressed that he took the Apos- les to his house, fed them, cleansed their wounds, and was baptized with his household. The Apostles then moved on, They were driven out of Thpssa- lonica by jealous Jews. At Berea they found devout Bible students. Then Paul went to Athens where he was shocked by the numerous statues of heathen gods and goddesses.

Seeing an altar erected "To the Unknown God," he made his famous speech from Mars' hill. Some believed, some scoffed; others said they would hear MEMORY VERSE "Be not afraid, but speak, and hold thy peace; for I am with tual son, a true believer to whom Paul wai to address his last epis- tte while he was a prisoner in Rome. Timothy went on with Paul and Silas. After receiving a message from tilt Spirit that they were not to preach in Asia, Paul had a viiion at night A man appeared to him, begging, "Come over into Macedonia and help us." probably had never been In Europe, but he obediently set sail for Macedonia. Coming to PhllippI, "chief city of that part of Macedonia," they went to a riverside on the Sabbath and met Lydla, a business woman, seller of purple, who worshiped God, and she, listening to Paul, was baptized, nviting the Apostles to accept the hospitality of her house.

Very briefly we may mention the girl whose masters made a great deal of money by her prophesies. She kept following the Apostles, crying, "These men are the servants of God, which shew us the way of salvation." Growing weary of this, Paul commanded the evil spirit to come out of her, which it did. This angered the men who profited by her power, and the men took Paul and Silas to the magistrate, saying they were teaching customs noi lawful. The multitude becoming enraged, too, him again. Leaving Athens, Paul went alone to Corinth, finding there a man named Aquila and his wife, Priscilla, Jewish tent makers from Rome, and as he also waij a maker of tents, he abode with them, teaching in the synagogue every Sabbath.

When Silas and Timothy joiri- ed him Paul was forbidden to teach in the synagogue, which provoked him, and he said he would preach to the Gentiles instead of the Jews. He then went to the house of Justus, "one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue." Then Crispus, chief ruler of Che Gotten (Text The Arco (On the summit stood the Temple of Venus.) "Be not afraid, but speak, nnd hold thy peace; for I am with Vision of the New Life." In spite of opposition in Corinth, Paul must have been encouraged by this, and was heartened by a vision of the Lord, who said: "Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee.
