Times Recorder ZANESVILLE Rosecrans girls soccer team advanced to the Division II district semifinals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tri-Valley in a sectional final at Gant Municipal Stadium Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Lady Bishops to 12-4-1 overall, while Tri-Valley ended its season at 11-6-2. "I expected this kind of game," said Lady Bishops coach Hugh Maxwell. "Tri-Valley has been playing well all year.

I expected, the same kind of game that River View gave us. They realized that Julie Paul was a scorer and Kristen Pottmeyer really stepped up for us." Paul fed Amy Maxwell for a cross kick that broke a scoreless tie at halftime, but Pottmeyer's goal later in the half gave the Lady Bishops breathing room and took some pressure off goalie Jen Middaugh. "Both goalies really played well," said Maxwell. "Obviously, the defense played tough all game. One of my top defenders in Erin Howdyshell went down with bad ankles, but the rest of the team really responded well." APTop25 They Fared No.

"He wasn't as talented as some, but he worked hard and played harder than anyone, and it rubbed off on the other kids.

If that ball was on the floor, he'd be on it. He was always pumping the other guys up." The last time he saw Buchanan was Thursday, when the boys and girls basketball teams were sharing the gym and weightroom for conditioning. Buchanan apparently was supposed to head out of town with his family later Friday. "He had just gotten the girls from the volleyball team, and I know he had the kids excited," Johnston said. "He loved the game and was always around it.

That's why he got into officiating. "He was a Christian person," Johnston added. "My uncle died a few years ago, and this is the worst I've felt since. I'm just sick about this, is about the best way you can describe it." Buchanan is survived by his wife, Susan, and daughters Andrea and Chelsa. A lot of people knew him." "In a place like this, it touches so many people in so many ways," Weekley said. "We need to get more people born and raised here involved in coaching. We need to get people of his credibility and character into coaching. If we had more people like him, we'd be a lot better off." One who decided to stay where he was born and raised is Morgan head football coach Mark Knapp. Although he graduated four years ahead of Buchanan, they were good friends, as are their wives.

Ed Johnston knows firsthand about Jerry Buchanan. The Raiders head boys basketball coach also was coach when Buchanan played in the late 1970's. "When I first started, in 1977-78, he was a junior, and he was captain his senior year," Johnston recalled. "He tore up his knee in the preview at Marietta, but he still came back to BUCHANAN: Tragedy impacts whole community MUSKIES: Caserio leads Blue Streaks to win Raiders. "It was a dream come true for him to get this job.

He was a community person who had paid his dues. "He had just come to our last boosters meeting, and asked us for money to help him with junior high uniforms. He had already raised half of the money himself." "I talked to him this past Wednesday, and I could see it in his eyes; he couldn't wait to get started," said Keith Spare, longtime Morgan statistician who has covered the Raiders for many years at the Morgan County Herald. "Even though they were just 3-18 last year, he thought they could surprise some people and they had strong potential. "He was a dedicated husband, father, coach and friend.

I've officiated sports and covered them for over 10 years, and he was one of the most positive people I've known. We need more coaches like him.
