Give where you work. 21 246 12c Controls Are Still Needed, Grayson Says WASHINGTON (AP) Wage-price controls should be dropped, but not until the economy slows down a little and food prices stabilize, says the former head of the defunct Price Commission. C. Jackson Grayson who headed the commission during its 14-month existence until it was disbanded in January, said now is not the time for the Nixon administration to junk controls. "They can't afford to take them off right now," Grayson said in a telephone interview.

"There would be such an explosion in prices that there would be a great demand for more stringent controls." He said the public resistance would be so great that Congress might even legislate a price freeze, a policy tool he opposes to deal with the present price surge. Grayson said he saw no chance that controls could be dropped this year but added, "hopefully, early next year, it will be possible. By then, I hope the food-price rises will have abated and the economy will have slowed down to give a little breathing room." A slower economy usually means there is less pressure for price increases. Grayson, who has returned to his economics post at Southern Methodist University, said he favored allowing the legal authority for wage-price controls to expire next April 30 because retaining it creates a temptation for continuing controls after their usefulness has expired. That legal authority is contained in the Economic Stabilization Act, which expires next April 30.

Unless Congress extends the power, wage-price controls will automatically end on that date. Grayson said, however, there may be a tradeoff with Congress in which wage-price controls are formally abandoned, but standby authority for them is retained. President Nixon has not announced whether he will seek an extension of the law, but his economic aides want to scrap wage-price controls as soon as inflation shows positive signs of cooling. Grayson, who was in charge of Phase 2 of wage-price controls, said that wage-price restraints "can work for a limited period of time," as they did during Phase 2. But now, he said, with the economy having gone through a boom and heavy demand present for commodities, price controls can do little to restrain inflation.

MEXICO (MO.) LEDGER 11 Tuesday, C. Oct. 30. 1973 Business And Industry News 'Good Life' Says 35-Year Chance Man had a good life," said Centralian Tom Marshall as he reminisced on the eve of his 35th anniversary with A. B.

Chance Co. Now a Chance security guard, Marshall joined the Company Oct. 19,1938 and has been there ever time out for service in World War n. Also observing recent service anniversaries with the company were Mrs. Bill (Mona) Ballard, Sturgeon, an assembler with 20 years, and Frank Myers, Centralia, a chief engineer who joined Chance five years ago.

Marshall is a Centralia native, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Marshall. The family lived in town during Tom's youth and he attended Centralia schools. Later they moved to a farm about eight miles from town.

Marshall worked for the Tom Gorman poultry house in Centralia and then for about a year at the A. P. Green Refractories in Mexico before joining Chance. He started in the Chance foundry and "worked there for 20 years," rising to bench and floor mold highest rated production job in the foundry. He switched to his present job 15 years ago after "my doctor suggested I should get off heavy lifting" and "I've been on it ever since." Marshall patrols the plant nights and weekends and says, "I like my work.

You meet a lot of people. I've made more good friends through my work and I've had some of the finest bosses I've ever worked for." Many of Marshall's fellow employees have similar feelings about him, for he has a reputation as "a good man" and "a man who speaks with a straight tongue." "One of the biggest thrills I've had working for the company was that I got to know Mr. A. B. and his fine son Gano," Marshall said.

Company founder A. Bishop Chance was, in Marshall's words, "One of the greatest people I ever knew. Some towns are blessed with an unusual man. Mr. A.

B. was that kind of man. Just knowing him helped to make you a little better person." Marshall is a man who speaks his mind and prizes his freedom to do so and he says that one thing he likes about A. B. Chance Company is that "you can express what you think and they respect you for it.

You can talk to anybody you want." He was one of the early members of the Chance Employees Savings and Profit Sharing Fund (started in 1939) and says, "I'm very proud of that. I hope to have a pretty nice life when we get to retire." Another highlight of Marshall's life was his World War II service in the Rangers, the American equivalent of the Tony Jesse Is Livestock Buyer Tony Jesse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Jesse of Mexico, has recently begun working as a livestock order buyer at Browning and Crowe Livestock Order Buying Co. in Monroe City.

Mr. Jesse, a graduate of Mexico High School with the class of 1971, graduated in August from Western Iowa Technical School in Sioux City. He and his wile, the former Miss Jane Fisher, reside in Quincy, 111., where she is a student at the Blessing Hospital School of Nursing. British Commandos. Marshall was drafted into the Army, volunteered for the Rangers after he got to North Africa, and got his Ranger training in Scotland and South Africa.

He signed up after hearing a talk by Lt. Col. Willianm 0. Darby, who commanded the First Ranger Battalion. "He was the kind of man I liked and I liked the way he described the Rangers.

It was a small outfit, but you never saw a finer bunch." The Rangers "were trained to do the dirtiest work raid behind enemy lines, blow up bridges, do as much damage as you could go in first on invasion beaches and clear out mines so the troops could get through." They were all volunteers and were free to leave the Rangers at any time, Marshall recalls, "but I never saw a man go out "of it If I had it to do over I'd do it again." Marshall fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy before returning to the U. S. and h'is work at Chance. Twenty-six years ago he and his wife Emma were marrie.d. "Smartest thing I ever did in my life," Marshall smiled.

They have two daughters. The older, Gayle, works in the University of Missouri- Columbia administrative offices. Rena is a senior at the. Universtiy. Tom's sister, Anna, worked for the Company 31- years.

A nephew, Jim shall, is a 20-year Tom and his wife moved yft 1952 to a 40-acre farm about four miles south of town. like messing around on Marshall grinned. "We haVe some beef cattle and ah' old milk cow, my the kids' horses and somfe chickens. It keeps us cupied." Newspaper Advertising Increases By NEW YORK, N.
