on guns in state offices is at odds with Utah law and likely will be tossed out in the next few months The Utah Attorney office has told state lawmakers the ban was effectively negated by in 1999 by changes the Legislature made to the gun laws The attorney opinion says state employees who hold con cealed weapon permits will likely be able to carry guns on the job State officials plan to abandon the gun prohibition possibly as soon as Jan 1 A spokesman for Attorney General Mark Shurtleff reveal much about the opinion citing attorney client privilege other than to say that it had been requested by lawmakers not clear when the opinion was written The workplace gun ban began about eight years ago in response to concerns about workplace safety said Con Whipple spokesman for the Human Resources department Whipple said he has no idea how many of the 21000 employ ees might begin bringing guns to work just know that there were employees who cheered us when we wrote the rule and others who cheer us as we rescind he said 'A gun rights advocate says work ers should have the option of carry ing guns for self defense I think it makes it Elwood Powell head of the Utah Shooting Sports Council share the opinion that more guns means more said Maura Carabello of the Gun Violence Prevention Center of Utah Carabello said she often has to do business in state office buildings not assured that those are safe without the ban she said Utah is one of the most permis sive states when it comes to restric tions on gun owners There are more than 42000 valid concealed weapons permits in Utah State officials issued 664 in October alone Permit holders must apply with the state but their names remain confidential Whether those permits allow peo ple to carry guns wherever they want is a question that will have to be decided by the courts said Mike Wims an assistant attorney general familiar with gun laws An effort to ban firearms at schools and churches failed in the 2001 Legislature not the first time Shurtleff has waded into a gun law fight since becoming attorney general a year ago There was a standoff earlier this year when Vice President Dick Cheney visited the state Republican convention The Secret Service nor mally allow guns anywhere near the vice president But gun owners wanted to be able to bring their weapons to the convention Ten arrested for drug smuggling
