OBITUARIES HEALTH The Spectrum riday April 12 2002 B7 OBITUARIES Alfred Rivas ST GEORGE Alfred Manuel Rivas of St George and Og den Utah passed away riday April 5 2002 at his home in St George after an exten sive battle with cancer He was born September 26 1930 in St Louis Missouri to Alfredo and Emily Virginia Thomas Rivas He was reared by his mother and stepfather Rudolph Helbach in the St Louis area He and his future wife Gloria Jean eary were childhood through adult hood sweethearts and best friends They were married July 28 1950 After having joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in 1974 they were sealed for time and eternity in 1 975 at the Ogden Temple They have six children: Steve (Lisa Ault) of Twin alls ID Bill (Helen of Santa Rosa CA Jeff £(Dixi Cloward) of North Ogden UT 1 Ginny (Joe) Shaw of Salt Lake City UT Laura (Doug) Wilson of Bountiful UT and Susan (Scott) Gotchy of Ogden UT as well as 19 grandchil dren three great grandchildren nieces and nephews Al was a loving and devoted husband and father whether it was hunting with his sons or having girl time with his daughters i He received a degree in Clownology from the of Contin uing Education to entertain his grand children He was devoted to his Church and lived the example of the He served in many Church callings including sev eral Bishoprics a Stake Presidency and High Council of the Ogden East Stake Al and Gio served missions in Eugene OR St George UT and as Stake missionaries in Ogden UT He was a devoted home teacher At the time of his passing he was an active member of the Bloomington Hills 5th Ward Al and Gio lived worked and trav eled much of the country during Al's service with the government as mis sionaries for their Church doing con sulting work and as volunteers on local and national disasters for the American Red Cross Al served four years with the US Army from 1948 to 1952 and retired from the orest Service with over thirty two years of ederal Service He received a Bachelors in orestry' and a Masters degree in Entomology both from the University of Missouri Al was grateful for the opportunity to have been able to work and asso ciate with the dedicated men and women of the US forest Service and other federal agencies who self lessly served their country at a loss of precious time together with their families Al also was thankful to have been able to work for six years with attorneys for the US Department of Agriculture who fought against vari ous special interest groups who sought to exploit public resources for their own and not the public's benefit Al organized and was the first Chapter Chairman of the Wasatch ront Chapter of the Society of American oresters Al considered himself extremely fortunate to have worked on lands of all ownerships federal tribal state and private During retirement he worked as a volunteer with the Bureau of Land Management's Arizona Strip District Rangeland Resource Team He credited the pro fessionalism and dedication of the BLM staff and the work of the team volunteers for avoiding in this area the grazing controversies that have been so prominent elsewhere In addition to his wife children and their families he is survived by his brothers Robert (Joan) Barclay Rivas of St Louis MO and David (Pam) Thomas of Idaho Springs CO I in Glen Garr CEDAR CITY Glen Garr a one time' resident of St George and a long time resi dent of Cedar City Utah passed away in Victorville Calif ornia at age 88 Glen was bom on January 4 1914 in Ogden Utah to Elizabeth (Greenwell) and Charles ielding Garr He was the third of four children and is preceded in death by sisters Gladys Pauline Garr and Evelyn Grace Soelberg and brother Lawrence Robert Garr He attended Ogden's Pingree Elementary School Wash ington Junior High School and in 1932 graduated from Ogden High School Throughout the depression years he helped to support his wid owed mother He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933 during which time he helped build the Duck Creek Recreation Area outside of Cedar City He met his future wife Jessie Elizabeth DeLaMater (Betty) in the summer of 1938 while working for her parents as an outfit helper for the Union Pacific Railroad They were married June 21 1939 in Ogden Utah Glen joined the US Navy as a member of the 89th Construction Battalion during WWII On November 1 1943 he land ed with the Marines on Bougainville Solomon Islands and helped his battal ion construct airfields and fighter strips on Guadalcanal and Okinawa He was honorably discharged on November 6 1945 In the post war years and until his retirement Glen worked for Underwood Typewriters Olivetti Corporation and was a partner in his own business He and Betty were hap pily married for nearly 35 years when Betty succumbed to cancer March 21 1974 They were blessed with seven children Glen David who died as an infant Allen Garr and his wife Ellen of Colville Washington Celia Driver and her husband Jerry of Everett Washington Steven Garr and his wife Margie of Ventura California Diane Olsen and her husband Kent of Parker Colorado Rebecca Maher and her husband Steven of Albuquerque New Mexico and Carol Viehweg and her husband Calvin of Apple Valley California Glen married Audrey Duty on October 17 1974 who already had three grown children Raymond Duty Leon Duty and Barbara Stephens and eight grandchildren of her own During their life together they enjoyed traveling visiting their extended family of children step children and 26 grandchildren and still had time to serve those less for tunate Together he and Audrey worked with Wydiff Bible Translators a mission ary group in Mexico and as Stake Missionaries in the Ventura California Stake prior to being called to serve a mission in Spanish speaking ort Lauderdale lorida or many years Glen also donated his time during tax season providing tax assistance to seniors He loved the time he spent working at The Happy actory in Cedar City building wooden toys for disadvan taged children And his greatest achievement involved genealogical research into his history a his torical legacy he left to his children and grandchildren Glen was a loving father grandfather and husband and devoted the last few years of his life caring for Audrey during her declining health At is the time of his passing they had enjoyed more than 27 years together as husband and wife His widow Audrey Duty Garr is still living in Apple Valley California In addition to his six surviving chil dren Glen was extremely proud of his 18 grandchildren: Christopher Garr Kelly (Olsen) Nixon Travis Garr Matthew George Jeffrey Garr Chad Olsen Hayley Garr Lisa Garr Jarom Viehweg Brian George Dustin Garr Kerry Olsen Kaitlin Maher Jordan Garr Jessica Viehweg Tyler Maher Laurel Viehweg and Cameron Olsen As a father grandfather and hus band he truly will be missed We love you and cherish the time we had togeth er! Michigan to Howard and Ruby Seeley Chesher He married Doro thy Myers and they were later divorced Dwight served his country in Italy and North Africa as a soldier in the USArmy during World War II He was a house painter in Benton Harbor and St Joe Michigan for 50 years He was a great fly fisherman and enjoyed the out doors Dwight loved life and was a loving and compassionate person He was a member of the Methodist Peace Temple or the past two years he resided in Rockville with his daughter Greer Surviving family include his daughter Greer Chesher of Rockville UT half brother Don (Ruth) Chesher to provide personal affordable service Study puts economic loss from smoking at $7 a pack By ERIN McCLAM Associated Press ATLANTA Each pack of cig arettes sold in the United States costs the nation $7 in medical care and lost productivity the govern ment said Thursday The study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the total cost of smoking at $3391 a year for every smoker or $1577 billion Health experts had previously estimated $96 billion Americans buy about 22 billion packs of cigarettes annually The CDC study is the first to establish a per pack cost to the nation The agency estimated the smoking related medical costs at $345 per pack and said job productivity lost because of prema ture death from smoking amounted to $373 per pack for a total of $718 The average cost of a pack of cigarettes in 1999 was $292 a big difference in the cost to society and what society is getting back in said the Dr Terry Pechacek believe society is bearing a burden for the individual behavioral choices of the The CDC said it analyzed expenses both personal and for the health care industry and used national medical surveys to calcu late the costs to the nation The agency also reported that smoking results in about 440000 deaths a year in the United States up from the previous figure of 430000 established in the early 1990s The new study was conducted from 1 995 to 1 999 fact that nearly half a mil lion Americans lose their lives each year because of smoking related ill nesses is a significant public health said Dr David leming the acting director A spokesman for tobacco giant Brown Williamson objected that the study presents the figures in a vacuum without comparing smok ing to the financial burdens other people nonsmokers with dia betes for example place on infant deaths each year Lung cancer causes the most deaths among smokers following by heart disease and lung disease Men account for about 60 per cent of smoking deaths 264000 a year compared with
