Orem-Geneva Times- -Wednesday, March 15, 1989 Page 4 Obituaries Norman Thoreson Haakon Norman Springville, died 8, 1989, a his home He was born Angeles, Calif. to Haakon Bernard and Beulah Natalie Forsyth Thoreson. He married Lillian Kay Smith, Sept. 13, 1953 in Santa Monica, Calif. They later divorced.

He married Ellen Louise Geertsen, June 4, 1984 riage was later Provo Temple. Thoreson, 62, of Wednesday, March of cancer. July 4, 1926 in Los in Provo. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held the office of high priest. He had served as MIA chorister, MIA superintendent, choir director, stake missionary, Seventy's group leader, Sunday School teacher, ward music chairman, ward clerk, High Priest Group instructor, and ward employment specialist. He acted in many church plays and had done commercials for the McCarty Agency.

He loved to hike in the mountains and the national parks. He is survived by his wife, Springville; eight children: Riki Destine Barney, Rigby, Idaho; Kris Devine Coons, Tika Sarine Thoreson, Rod Isaak Thoreson, Kitt Klarine Thoreson, all of Orem; Kari Jardine Mullins, Bull Head City, Lilk Joline Williams, Salt Lake City; Sten Jakob Thoreson, Hawaii; three stepchildren: Brant M. Geertsen, Montana; Kristie Geertsen, Pamela Geertsen, both of Springville; 10 grandchildren; one sister: Beatsice Yvonne Hunt, San Diego, Calif. Funeral service held Saturday in the Springville 2nd-14th-24th Ward LDS Chapel. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Jose F. Martinez Jose F. Martinez, 75, of Orem, died Thursday, March 9, 1989 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. He was born Jan. 20, 1914 in Park View, N.M., a son of Elimino F.

and Maria Del Carmen Martinez Martinez. He married Romona Valdez in New Mexico and was later divorced. He received his education in New Mexico schools. Following his marriage, he and his wife made their first home in Price; then they moved to Grand Junction, Colo. Later, they moved to Dragerton where they lived for 16 years.

In 1962, he moved to the Provo-Orem area where he has resided since. While living in Dragerton he worked in Horse Canyon with U.S. Steel. He retired from Geneva Steel after 24 years of service there. He was a member of the St.

Francis Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and activities with the senior citizens. He is survived by six sons and three daughters, Gilbert Edward Valley; Joe Fermin Martinez, West Jordan; James J. Martinez and Johnny Lee Martinez, both of Orem; Ricky Alex Martinez, Kearns; Freddy L. Martinez, Springville; Mrs.

Chad (Josephine) Lindsey, Aurora, Mrs. Edgar (Linda) Lacayo, Vernal; Mrs. Ross (Rosa) Bell, Phoenix, 43 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; one brother and three sisters, Joe N. Martinez and Mrs. Frank (Constance) Sandoval, both of Della, Mrs.

Amanda Miner Amanda Estella Miner, 1-day-old infant twin daughter of Bryan and Roxanne Cordova Miner of Springville, died Friday, March 3, 1989, at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. She was born March 2, 1989 in Provo. Survivors include her parents, an older sister, Rachelle Mary Miner; a twin sister, Danielle Francisquita Miner, all of Springville; grandparents, Edward Cordova, Orem; Mary and Niel Miner, Provo; great-grandmother, Mary Shell, Orem. Graveside services were Fridayin the Santaquin City Cemetery. Bert Sanford Betrun James Sanford, 83, of Payson, died Saturday, March 11, 1989, in a Provo care center.

He was born Aug. 16, 1905 in Butterfield, a son of William and Elizabeth Dryberg Sanford. He married Electa Drollinger, in September of 1954 at Nephi. He was the father of Mrs. Weston (Lola) Cordner of Orem.

Graveside service will be Wednesday, 12:15 p.m. at the Payson City Cemetery. Maude Roberts Maude Elizabeth Roach Roberts, 87, of Provo, died Saturday, March 11, 1989, at her home. She was born May 6, 1901 in Spanish Fork, the daughter of Joseph H. and Elizabeth Ann Williams Roberts.

She married J. Lyne Roberts, Nov. 23, 1921 in Spanish Fork. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple Sept. 8, 1948.

He died Dec. 31, 1962. She was the mother of Mrs. LaRae Deaton of Orem. Funeral was Tuesday in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, Provo.

Burial was in the Provo City Cemetery. Christie Lyman Christie Larsen Lyman, 90, of Milford, died Saturday, March 11, 1989 in the Milford Valley Memorial Hospital She was born Aug. 13, 1898 in Mayfield to Albert Franklin and Josephine Sorensen Larsen. She married Ezra De Lyman, March 6, 1919 in the Manti LDS Temple. He died Oct.

14, 1981. She was the mother of Mrs. Clifford (Betty) Jensen of Orem. Crypt-side service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Salt Lake Mausoleum, 1001 Eleventh Ave.

HOT BANK Police investigate Orem police investigated an assault incident involving a 14- year-old boy and another youth at the Orem Fitness Center. According to the police report, a 14-year-old boy at the Fitness Center was approached by another male carrying a knife. He told the victim he didn't like his T-shirt.

Croft Geraldine White Croft, 66, of Orem, died Monday, March 13, 1989 at a Provo Hospital. She was born November 22, 1922 i in Goshen, a daughter of Valient Joseph and Nellie Sorensen White. She married Herbert Joel Croft November 22, 1940 in Salt Lake City.

The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He died October 24, 1983. She grew up in Goshen and was educated in Payson. She lived in Orem and Provo after marriage. They moved to Highland in 1964 to expand their mink ranch.

They moved back to Orem in 1974. She worked as a clerk at ZCMI for a few years. She was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in an MIA presidency, most recently as a ward librarian and visiting teacher. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, and fishing. Survivors include one son and three daughters, Marce V.

Croft, Sandy; Sandra Thompson, Orem; Mrs. Farrell (Irene) Larson, American Fork; Mrs. Perry (Ellen) Messick, Pleasant Grove; 17 grandchildren; two brothers and sisters, Joel White, Phil White, Marjorie Cook, all of Goshen; Fern Kirk, Tooele; Madlyn Knowles, Salt Lake City; Shirley Fillis, Provo. She was preceded by a sister, Kathryn Abbott, Payson. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 16, at 11 a.m.

16, 1896 in Cedar Cliffs (Birch Creek), to Orson and Janet Livingston Despain. He married Laurelda Ann Oldroyd, Sept. 8, 1926 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died Sept. 19, 1976.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter, Donley L. Despain, Irell O. Despain, both of Orem; Mrs. Jay L. (Vonda) Bowles, Nephi.

Funeral was Monday in Fountain Green. Burial in Fountain Green Cemetery with military rites by Fountain Green American Legion. Sylvia J. Julietta Overwater Overwater, 87, Orem, died Thursday, March 9, 1989 of congestive heart failure. She was born July 29, 1901 in Santaquin to Joseph A.

and Caroline Blixt Olsen. She married John Overwater, April 15, 1938 in San Francisco, Calif. He died in 1977. She was a homemaker. She was a receptionist and cashier in San Francisco.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. survived by a sister, Deane Lapriel, Salt Lake City; five nephews and two nieces. Funeral was Monday in Santaquin. Burial in the Santaquin City Cemetery. Vilma Shaffer Vilma Burg Shaffer, 89, of Murray, died Wednesday, March 8, 1989 in American Fork.

She was born March 2, 1900 in Topeka, a daughter of Otto and Toni Ravens Burg. She moved to Utah in 1982 and lived in Provo, Orem and Murray. She had a life long interest in nature, gardening, and ecology. Survivors include one son and two daughters. Memorial service was held Saturday in the Windsor First Ward Relief Society Room, Orem.

Contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society, the Garden Club, or a favorite charity, in her name. Isaac Thornton Issac Anthony Thornton, 5, of Lehi, died Saturday, March 11, 1989, of injuries suffered in an autopedestrian accident. He was born Sept. 10, 1983, in Gunnison, the son of Kenneth Lloyd and Mary Ellen Adams Thornton. He was the grandson of Mr.

and Mrs. Rex Adams of Orem. Funeral was Tuesday in Lehi. Burial was in the Lehi City Cemetery. then reportedly withdrew the knife and left the scene.

CAR BURGLARY Police investigated theft of stereo, power booster, and $100 worth of tapes from a car parked in the vicinity of 700 North and 400 East. The theft took place Monday night. Police said the items were valued at $400. Men Charged Two males, 38 and 32 years of age, were in custody Tuesday following their arrest about midnight Monday night on charges of drug use and sales. Seminar will discuss behavior of retarded children The Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) Utah County North) is sponsoring a panel discussion dealing with helps for parents regarding social behaviors in mentally retarded children.

The workshop will cover such topics as identifying the various types of wood flooring, how to resand the floor to bare wood or sand a new floor for finishing.

Instruction will also be given on the use of power floor sanders, types of abrasive, fillers, and finishes. The Continuing Education Department at UVCC is sponsoring the workshop which is offered twice: Tuesday, April 5, 1989, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. a and Saturday, April 22, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

They have been chosen by Mr. Hill as the best band players of the school. They will play with other junior highs in a concert on Saturday, March 18th at 4:00 p.m.

at the DeJong Concert Hall. They are: Sandy Swain, Emily Bishop, Marta Keller, Lane Pollock, Carey Nuttall, Nathan Crandal, Bill Cobabe, Randy Davis, Polly Martin, Brian Kunz, Russell Evans, and Dan Bryce. Congratulations! The term ends this Friday so get all your grades up so you can get good grades and feel successful. There is an art contest open to all students of Lakeridge. Your entries must be submitted to Mrs. Shepherd by March 23rd. Last Thursday we had an assembly.

The people who are in Chorus and also the guitar people for school. They did a really good job. Wednesday was our band concert. There were two concerts which our award winning Stage Band performed in both concerts. They all did wonderfully.
