CITY OF FORT LAUDERDALE February 14, 2010 Dear Business Owner: With the start of a new decade, the City of Fort Lauderdale encourages you and your employees to carefully monitor alcohol and tobacco sales. As you may be aware, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department has conducted numerous undercover operations to identify alcohol and tobacco sales to minors in an effort to help reduce the consequences of underage drinking and tobacco use; and, we will continue to conduct these operations during 2010. As a licensed alcohol and tobacco retailer, you are responsible for verifying that a customer is at least 21 years of age before a sale of alcohol is made, and at least 18 years of age for the sale of tobacco products. Failure to check for valid identification can result in significant criminal sanctions and the loss of a license to sell alcohol and tobacco.

We urge you to ensure that you are in compliance with the law and are checking identification before making a sale. Please be aware that approximately 6,000 people under the age of 21 die each year due to underage drinking. Underage drinking is the leading cause of death for persons under age 21. The seriousness of this issue as well as the long-term health related effects of tobacco use warrant cooperation from all citizens and business owners in the community. If you would like more information on how you can help prevent underage drinking, please feel free to contact us at (954) 828-6633.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
