D2 Friday, October 14, 2005 The Spectrum SOUTHWEST LIVING Orlando blooms under Crowe's influence The Utah Shakespearean Festival presents 4th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival Paramount Pictures When the death of his father brings Drew Baylor, played by Orlando Bloom, right, to Elizabethtown, his life is changed after he meets a flight attendant named Claire, played by Kirsten Dunst, in the film drama "Elizabethtown." By SUSAN WLOSZCZYNA USA TODAY TORONTO You can always count on Cameron Crowe to be friendly, inquisitive and exceedingly considerate. If there were a rock 'n' roll division of the Boy Scouts, the ex-Rolling Stone writer whose movie soundtracks are filled with meticulously selected music would be the perfect scoutmaster. The eternally upbeat filmmaker can't help but be a positive force for someone such as "Lords of the Rings" phenom Orlando Bloom, 28, the latest actor to assume the mantle of director's alter ego in a Crowe film. Not only has he rescued the Brit from epic overload by casting him as an ambitious son whose father's death sends him on a sentimental journey to Kentucky in "Elizabethtown," opening Friday. Crowe and his life-affirming ihemes also have apparently encouraged Bloom, much like his character, to relax and put career matters, such as summers disappointing "Kingdom of Heaven," into perspective.

Now Crowe has reinvented Bloom as a contemporary leading man and exposed him to a heaping helping of Southern hospitality. The two stopped to chat with USA TODAY at last month's Toronto International Film Festival. Question: It's nice to see you in everyday clothes, not wielding a sword. Bloom: Although I almost had a sword in this. Crowe: We had a scene where he was given a sword by Loudon Wainwright III (as his Uncle Dale).

ing attention to the gas gauge. We ended up at a gas station, and a guy came up to him and tried to save Orlando's soul. He was really funny. He said, "What do you doT And Orlando was like "Uh, you know, uh, uh OK, I'm an actor." The guy's like, "OK, what have you been Orlando is like, "Oh, well, "Lord of the And the guy's like Together: "Never heard of it." Crowe: He's like, of the The guy's like Together: "Never heard of it" How real is Crowe: Probably like 60 percent, maybe more. The idea of wanting to bond with a father after he's gone is pretty authentic.

Going back to Kentucky to handle the funeral arrangements. Very authentic. Orlando, you lost your dad, human rights activist Harry Bloom, when you were only 4. Bloom: Actually, he was my mother's husband. My dad is alive and well in Canterbury.

Until I was 13, 1 lived with the idea that my dad had died. Then I found out that my guardian was my father. He's your friend, Cameron, and he co-produced this movie. But what's with Tom Cruise? Crowe: Honestly, when I saw Oprah, I thought, "I know that guy." He's that enthusiastic. That's him.

When he used to do interviews and people' said, "You know, I just want him to be more himself in his interviews. He seems serious." Well, he was himself on the Oprah show. Then they said, "What happened to the serious guy?" So when I see that, I think, "That's the high-fiving guy we know." Saturday, October 15 10 a.m. 4 p.m. $5 Admission Randall L.

For more information, call 586-7880 Anything because I think John Cusack is amazing. Not every actor can pull off a romantic comedy that well. Crowe: There is a very short list of guys who can do that and there always has been. You have to be funny, romantic and dramatic when necessary. That's why Cary Grant got every script Bloom: Cary Grant was one of the guys Cameron would use as a reference.

He'd say to me, "This is a Cary Grant moment. This is a Jack Lemmon moment." You get a Hollywood history lesson working with Cameron. Bloom: Totally. I got off the plane in Kentucky, and I was driving from the airport. I had my DVD player and was watching "The Apartment" for the third time.

The car blew out a tire on the Bluegrass Parkway. Ten minutes later, I'm sitting there, and Cameron picks me up. We had all these car dramas. We ran out of petrol when we were rehearsing. Crowe: I was videoing at the same time, and no one was pay- You first met on a Gap ad? Crowe: It was a parody of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." John Toll, the cinematographer I always work with, is famously crusty.

He and I were just watching these takes going, "You can't take your eyes off Orlando. He's really great and romantic in one take and funny in the other." I was finishing up the script of "Elizabethtown," and he was the first guy I called. But Ashton Kutcher was to play Drew at one point. Crowe: Orlando wasn't available for a while. He was doing "Pirates of the Caribbean." Bloom: It didn't look like it was going to work, but it felt very fated that it all worked out in the end.

You're a Cameron Crowe fan. Bloom: I wouldn't have done a commercial if it wasn't with Cameron Crowe. I Jove the cool of "Almost Famous." I love looking behind the scenes of the music world. And I love "Say For Dnt 1 lli-W' 0 '(if 111 Bridge Lessons at Summit Athletic 1532 E. 1450 S.
