Obituaries Gertrude Maxwell, led Save-A-Pet By Wayne K. Roustan STAFF WRITER Gertrude Maxwell, the philanthropic founder of Save-A-Pet died on Tuesday night. She was 99. Mrs.

Maxwell died at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach. She began her crusade at the age of 61 after attending a Chicago-area Humane Society meeting where she was shocked to learn that an estimated 90,000 homeless pets were euthanized in the country every month. Mrs. Maxwell helped launch one of the nation's first "no kill" shelters in Highland Park, on Aug. 28, 1972, according to the Save-A-Pet website.

Save-APet is credited with saving more than 70,000 dogs and cats over 38 years, according to its website. "She's in all of our orientation videos and she's in our flyers about how SaveA-Pet started," said intake coordinator Katie Evans, at the shelter in Grayslake, Ill. The teacher moved to Palm Beach in 1978, with her first husband, real estate investor Mark Maxwell, where she continued her campaign to spay, neuter and save as many pets as possible. Mrs. Maxwell is survived by her third husband, Sol Hurwitz, and daughter Nancy.
