THE ad rrt RET mews NEWS augast august 8030 GEORGE eanno CANNON EDITOR AND PUBLISHER wednesday angustaugust so 30 1871 hear the teachings there given that was the reason they had such immense congregations gat ionslons the camp meeting did not attract the miners they cared nothing about it they hadbad seen and known and learned all they wished about them long ago they did not come here to bunt me- thodismthod ismlam but silver and gold but bat our people turned outont especially in the even aings by thousands andheard them aspea speak and formed their own opinions I 1 have been at camp meetings in my boyhood and I 1 did not mot think the one held here a fair specimen not what a camp meeting used to be thirty nive five years ago if a faith will not bear to be investigated if its preachers and professors are afraid to have it examined their kneir foundation must be very weak those who come intothe church of latter day saints if they are faithful learn in a shorttimeand know fon for themselves the holy spirit and the light of eternal tru truth th rest down upon them and youyon will hear them here and there testify that they know of thedoctrine that they are acquainted with and understand it for fon themselves there has been a great howl from the pulpit andtha press calling upon the government vern ment of the united states to exert its power to suppress a practice in the faithof tho the latter day saints bowhow the fact of the omo case is 13 it is out ofthe power of any government vern ment br or nation to regulate religion at the pre present age itis a matter that must haust regulate you may drive men drom from their homes homed rob them of their posses possessions lonsions murder their leaders deprive themthera of their civil and religious rights but you cannot change their opinions by such arguments and when men mod have recourse to them it aply signifies that the found foundation ate upon which their system is basedis very weak and that hat their only hope of enforcing ng their owai own and suppressing the views of others by force shame on the low degraded feelings which prompt such measures ea auresanres in iri every land freedom of thought though tand and opinion and the th liberty to preach and practice whatever religion jou you wish should be guaranteed and the fhe only method of manifesting disapproval of the course pf af others in these respects should be to them from their churches allali should have this privilege it feels good for pora fora a man to believe as hebe pleases and isyou if you undertake to check this do not put to death daub with tar and feathers or tear down the dwellings of those who differ from TOU von where is the liberty justice and of bach each a course I 1 have been through the mill a littleand understand howbow it feels for my own part how however ev er I 1 believe that mankind generally are getting ott ing wiser on this subject our puritan a fathers never succeeded in forcing their peculiar views on othersand ia in time even among themselves everybody every hodybody conlaconia co niduld say about what he pleased Ift ased or at any rate the particular points upon which there was the greatest troubletroubie were taken away so it will ivill be in the present meat mema as ft itis very well understood that by many of if the 06 cF cleople people eople the law of marri marriage ate ake ia Is ret rot regarded garde aa as somethingething instituted by god and that men in their thele 14 laws ws regulations and anthe subject havebave undertakenunder takedlaken to govern their fellows too much our oar fathers abra- ham and jacob and many of the prophets tools steps luths in this matter which arg are ard now denounced by a arge arge arke portion of christen- dom as very geir wrong anddad yet these very persons in their praye prayers rs and preach ings claim that they are going to abrahams bosom 1 I 1 can teiltell any ady man that wishes to murder rob and plunder and deprive of lib ib arty a day saint because he believes and practices plurality of or wives that geneed never expect to dwell id iii abra anra bama forfur father abraham abrahan willwilt not mt cist hig his wives out to receive narrow minded mum I 1 can further tell themthein that if i rever fever ever they come lothe to the gateson gates of the tho new now jerusalem they will there find the jamesf name sf the twelve sonsrons of jacob and if they bellore believe with all their hearts that Jam jacob band and his sons bons most of whom were polygamists were wicked men and most ot of the sons bastards they hadbad letter better better stay outside in fact they will not be permitted to enter unless they can acknowledge these twelve sons as lawful and legitimate sons in accordance with the law of dod godi they will have to stay outside and with out are dogs sorcerers whoremongers idolaters idol aters and everybody that loves an and a diakes ni akes a lieile I 1 may imay god enable us onland all to be trul truly prepared re to enter through the gates in tobe city it yi isi 1 my mr prayer in eherd of jesu desus jesus amenaraen i i it ON the instable utah northern railroad company hat hatch Heze hezekiah klahkiah thatcher and john thung young directors the road is to be built from some point on the central pacific railroad in box elder co probably at or near willard city to soda springs and it will be a three feet track the prospects for the tho speedy completion of thib thia lineage li line are very bright at the first meeting stock to the amount of was subscribed fo- rthe engineer party surveying the route ia Is already in the field and the work of grading will be commenced next week several hundred men will be employed at this work arrangements for theibe iron and rolling stock necessary for the road have been made and it is confidently and with good reason expected that it will be completed to logan by the first of next december and to soda springs by the first of next august from thecharacter of the gentlemen engage engaged din in this enterprise the arrangements they have made and the means which they have at their command there is no doubt about the work being through ugh with dispatch the line will be bea a 8 most useful one and will do a large and increasing business for the country through which it will run is tolerably well settledand possesses fine agricultural andmineral resources we are pleased to notice that many of the leading men of cache county county are members ofthe board of directors the road cannot fallfail to be a great advantage to that county as crossing the davi divide to mendon it will pass near to or through the most of the settlements when this thib road toad shall be completed soda springs will be easy of access ana and will become a place of great resort it is with great pleasure that we chronicle the news respecting the organization of the utah northern railroad with the utah central southern and now the utah northern our territory gives promise that she will be as forward in constructing construct ipg and running railroads as she is in the other elements of real progress already the telegraph wire is stretched to nearly every settlement in the terr territory atory in other State states sand and territories tolee telegraph raph lines have been built with regard to profit alone butthe question in utah has not been will the telegraph line pay kutbut but Is it needed 2 the convenience of the people and public utility required the erection of lines and they were extended through the territory and their profits were left to the future they have been of immense ad advantage vantage to the country and they will yet pay now we are ready for railroadsand their construction st will give a great impulse to the improvement and development of the country the business of building them is being entered upon with spirit and many yearb yeara will not elapse before before every important settlement will have its railroad the thi people of utah need every agency that can be brought into service to aid them in the work that liesiles before them and railroads have their pirt part and a very Amport important ant part too to perform in that work A SURVEY sunvey has been made by chief eneu gincer fox of theibe ground for the contemplated tem plated city water works and negotiations are being made by the city for the piping it is expected that two small email reservoirs will be built on the line of city creek about rods north east from the corner of the temple block these are for the purpose of clearing the water arrangements will be made by means of a drainpipe drain pipe to have a constant flow of water out of these reservoirs by which the fluid will be kept fresh the fallfrom the reservoirs servo irs to the temple block will be one hundred feet the intention we understand is to lay the main pipe down east temple street and have branbranches clies or two blocks on each side with pro probably bibly two fire plugs on each block by this arrangement the most densely populated portion af pf the city will be supplied with this necessary element and this part once furnished pipes will gradually be gate extended throughout the city this thib work ork will be conducted under the superintendence per ofTheo theodore thore ilore mckean esq and will iii be pushed forward with all fill possible dispatch it Is expected that the water will babe flowing in an the pipes ca before frost adf idi this notion action of the City council inkinn in relation to water waterworks works will be very gratifying to the public for months past our city fathers haye bave hadbad thilithill thi subject under consideration they have not rushedinto print to proclaim their intentions or progress this is not their style but they have been considering the subject collecting information and maturing their plans and now they are ready for action in this connection we may say what is rarely said eaid for we are ahre not in the habit of praising oat oft officers leers for doing their duty that we are proud of pur saisal pai pat officers no city on the continent has as better and we know of none which has a government so wisely and economically omi cally managed as that of salt lake city they aremen who labor conscientiously for the welfare of the community who handle the public funds in a most judicious and prudent manner and whose official conduct Is above reproach and this hag has been the character of the mayors aldermen and councillors councilors Counci lors of the city from its first organization until the present time such a record as salt lake city has in this respect we think is unexampled this city has been settled twenty four years the improvements which have been made duning during that period comp re ire favorably with the general run of cities which are no longer fettled and have no larger population and yet not a bond has ifa been issued not a debt contracted that could not be promptly paid not a truthful charge has bus been made against a mayor an alderman or a councilor that hebe as such had been guilty of malfeasance or hadbad used iris liis position for the promotion of his private interests and the taxes have been and are light sensible men whose attention has been directed to this city and the manner in which its affairs have been conducted have been loud in their praise and capitalists who come here have a feeling of confidence which they could not have were the city governed byedbyad by adventurers reckless politicians or unprincipled seekers after office the municipal authorities are ard sustained by the assurance that they have the entire confidence of the people and they know that they will always have their support BO so long bs they are as true aa as they have been TO THE tuil DESEI desel deseret NEWS GENE general ilax elax ItAL springfield 24 butler delivered a speech here this evening
