Today's Editorial- A Most Famous American MEXICO (MO.) LEDGER Page A Tuesday, June 4, 1974 Can you name an American who became the head of a foreign state? There is one. Perhaps, only one. What's more, she is a woman. And, certainly, the only American woman to ever be head of any state. Her name is Golda Meir.

Golda Meir was born in Kiev, Russia, in 1898. She migrated to the United States where she lived until she was 23 years old. That makes her ours. During that time, she was a school teacher in Milwaukee. In 1921, she emigrated to Palestine where she played an important role in the founding and development of Israel.

In 1969, she became Prime Minister of Israel. She retired from that office this week at the age of 76. She was, and is, a great woman. She was a pioneer in her adopted nation. She became a formidable world leader.

And because of her success, one wonders about other American women. Women who migrated to America, or grew up here, are among the best educated women in the world. They are among the most healthy, most traveled, most read, most informed, best fed, best housed, best clothed How does it happen we have never had a woman as President of the United States? Or as Governor of a state? Why is there no American Queen Victoria in our history? Or a Golda Meir in our own government? ANN LANDERS LETTERS COLUMN A Letter About Therapists I 1 tv channels 2 Kfvi. I would also like to express my appreciation to all the To Your Good About Cat Scratch Fever George C. Thosteson, M.D teachers of Community R-VI for giving me this honor. Thosteson: Recently I heard that if a pregnant woman gets scratched by a cat she could bear a defective child. I suspect I am pregnant, and since I have been scratched twice since my last period I am worried A. C. I think you or whoever told you about it is confusing cat scratch fever with toxoplasmosis. Cat scratch fever is caused by an organism that produces skin infection and lymph Information For Blind BERWYN, you suddenly lost your sight, you would ask; "Where do I go from Here?" Dialogue, recorded magazine for the blind, has the answer.

Every year thousands of people lose their sight, some suddenly in an auto accident and some gradually from disease or injury. After the shock wears off they are faced with the reality of coping with life. Until now there has been no answer to their question and no source of information and direction, except in print which the newly blind cannot read. This need is being met by Dialogue Publications, Berwyn, Illinois, with a recorded guide for the newly blind which can help bring them back to a productive life. Begun through a matching grant from Reader's Digest more than two years ago, editors and blind persons consulted for their expertise in work for the blind have written an encouraging, instructive production in sound that a newly-blinded person can read for himself by listening.

Entitled "Where Do I Go From Here?" it draws for its text from the experiences of many persons who have gone through the experience of losing sight themselves. These people tell in this recorded effort how they confronted loss of sight and how they have adjusted their lives while remaining productive citizens. "While other pieces have been written on this subject," said Editor Don Nold, originator of the idea, "they were produced only in print. Newly-blinded persons cannot read them. Doctors dismiss them without giving information they so sorely need at this point, so it is no wonder that they ask the question, 'Where do I go from Several persons contributed sections of the guide dealing with particular phases of the matter.

On disc records, the guide offers help for those partially sighted, as well as those totally blind. It tells how people have revamped their lives, not despite blindness, but by using in a new way, the talents, education, and experience gained as a sighted person. An appendix to the main text is a one-hour anthology of articles selected from Dialogue magazine. Margaret Freer, a former member of the editorial staff of Ideals magazine who lost her sight more than six years ago, assembled the segments of the guide, rewriting and editing until a final manuscript was ready for recording. She gave it the title and also wrote the companion piece for members of the family and associates of the blind person.

Entitled "Promises to it is in ink print and outlines the "do's and don'ts" for those who will share the traumatic experiences of learning to live without sight. Dialogue's staff members participating, in addition to Nold and Ms. Freer, were 1 Managing Editor B. T. Kimbrough, Studio Director Bill Wetendorf, former Production Editor Fred Gissoni, Women's Editor Rose Burnham, Associate Editor John Ashenhurst, Intercom Editor Janet Bixby, Former Executive Director Woody Boyles.

Also participating were former Men's Editor Wells Mori, former Women's Editor Lillian Rosenbom, and former staff members Tom Coke and Maureen Young. The 110,000 grant from Reader's Digest matched in a fund drive by Chicago Community Trust and others will finance the production of the recorded guide, produced at a cost of more than $2. each. A national promotion to make availability of the "Where Do I Go From Here?" recording known to doctors, ophthalmologists, health centers, optometrists, Lions clubs, persons facing loss of sight, and members of their families begins this week. Although the initial cost will be paid by the Reader's Digest grant, contributions to Dialogue will be invited to aid in a continuance of the program.

"We are especially desirous that a contribution to Dialogue will not prevent a newly- blinded person from getting a copy," Nold said. "Its value lies in the timing. The sooner after one learns he is facing a life without sight, the more helpful these recordings will be. We want to reduce as much as possible the time lost between the realization that he is facing a life of blindness and his start toward readjustment." To those who have friends or relatives who have lost their sight, Dialogue will send a soundsheet reproducing samples of actual voices heard on the 90-minute production, including how to get a copy free. Address Dialogue, Berwyn, Illinois 60402.

While it's a nuisance, and in any event not very common, it isn't something for you to worry about. Toxoplasmosis is an entirely different matter.

That is a parasite sometimes present in the stool of infected animals and rather common in cats. In a pregnant woman, the disease can be transmitted to an unborn child. For whatever reason, this rarely happens with a first pregnancy, but it is common enough in later pregnancies to be cause for some concern. Early in pregnancy it is likely to cause an abortion. Later in pregnancy it can cause eye or brain damage in the child.

While I don't urge banning cats from a household, I do most distinctly urge that pregnant women, or women who suspect they are pregnant, avoid handling a cat's litter box. If unavoidable, then wash very thoroughly. In cases of doubt, skin and blood tests will determine whether you toxoplasmosis. 24 Hours i2 (See Tv) Weather (Adv.) 5:45 AM 4 News 6: oo AM 4 P.S. 4 6:30 AM 2 Farm Report 4 Semester 5 Focus 10 LaLanne have 11 Cisco Kid 6:45 AM 2 Lone Ranger Dear Dr.

But don't ask if you can play in it if you come to Washington. It's reserved exclusively for the two Tv camermen and a lighting director who'll be in it from the day the House Judiciary Committee finally opens its impeachment investigation to the public. The tree house, so named by ABC officials, cost an estimated $19,000 to put up. It's located on the south side of the massive Rayburn Building, which cost an estimated $150 million to put up.
